Subwoofer

"yes"

but you'll find that many if not all manufactured subs are rather small in nature to cater to the industry. By doing so, they are sacrificing performance in other areas, or putting a lot more money into the motors - which just raises their cost.

So all that to say, sometimes you'll find smaller subs that can keep up - but they'll probably be expensive and extremely heavy.

6" woofer in a sub...woofer! No way a woofer this small has any serious displacement.

Sunfire uses woofers as small as 8" but these are extra long throw TC Sounds drivers, and even these cannot displace enough to keep up at any serious levels with large mains in a larger room.

To get true deep and powerfull bass I think the diametre of a subwoofer needs to incorperate a large subwoofer driver. The more air you can pump the more bass you get! but as seen with some manufacturers you can have a small sized subwoofer driver that uses a large motor the push that driver further, thus pushing more air. But even the manufacturers who make these small high powered woofers would not even dabble in the region of 6" subwoofers. For reference a basic subwoofer set up using say a 12 inch subwoofer, medium sized ported cabnet and fair amplifier (say 200W) will give you fairly deep base at moderate levels ( this can be argued using many different factors[;)]) I think you should go have a listen to one of these 6" fake subwoofers then go to your local high quality audio shop and listen to some larger designs. The difference should show you that really, the 6" driver almost doesnt even play bass.

Good luck, Brendan

PS: see if you can find a 10" 12" and 15" sub all for the same price as each other. they should if built basically the same get louder and deeper as they go up in size.

What all these kind people are telling you...STOP BEATING AROUND THE BUSH.

And get a real sub, with a real woofer...like the Fathom f113,with a monster displacement, and 4" peak to peak. HE HE Cone travel so large it may knok you out if you try to look up the woofer from too close. [:D]

You need a sub so powerful it will knock pictures off walls(DrWHO is an expert in this departament.) [;)]

PS Please note you need lightweight pictures, fixed with a tiny nail.Fixed on a wall that can vibrate very easy and has no two by fours supporting it. [:P]

Most people won't make the jump to a Fathom after looking at 6"ers. (Can't find the smiley!)

Seriously, a Klipsch Sub 10 is a very good buy for starters. And stretching a bit I would point a Sub 12 ,HSU STF2 or SVS ten incher. Also in the tiny but good,Sunfire D-8.Tiny,small price and musical, good down to 30Hz.

Now back to normal insanity...[:P]

Today I again did listening tests, listening to most of my subs, and again amazement...how great the f113 and f112 are. These subs have no audible colorations to add to mains, cut them below the mains and voila...run the ARO...bingo! Superb, a true refined sub bass machine,in a compact and ...lightweight ready to carry size. [:D]

Yes the Danley can knock out walls, destroy pictures on walls and rip eardrums to pieces.

Good to administrate CPR [:o]

JW,

This is not the woofer used in the f113 and Gotham, the units used in the home subs are not the same. And yes JL claims 4" PtoP. There are also clips on the JL site of the driver in question..in action. Sick excursion.

Remember I did not claim anything,JL is.

According to their "effective displacement" and "effective surface area" specs, the driver is doing 3.6" P-P...but that will never be achieved with acceptable levels of distortion (as well all know). Same goes for the Gotham which just happens to be using two drivers.

Why not use the 13W7?

And why use an off the shelf woofer when you can bring modifications to make one perform better in a home sub?

Start looking, reading JL Audio's website if you really want to get to the bottom of things.

Even send them an email.Who better then one of JL Audio engineers to inform an inquiring mind.

The home vesrion of the W7 uses a good deal larger magnetic structure and a few modifications. The larger magnetic structure is as obvious as daylight.

McCauley a pro driver that is far from a high excursion driver of today.Nothing special excursion wise when compared to TC Sounds or JL Audio top dogs.
