darkside
Does anyone know of any mods that can be done to RF-15 crossovers to get better sound? Like new caps or completely new networks? Is it even worth it? I get great sound out of my RFs now, but am looking for something better without getting entirely new speakers. BTW, I use an HK-3380 as the receiver and it works well with the Klipsch. Also, I have yet to actually open up the speaker and take a look as I'm just finding out what the deal is right now... Speedball
Dean G. did my RF-7 crossovers for much less than a high dollar amp would have cost me and I'm very pleased with the results. The change seemed to bring the mids forward and tamed the highs at the same time. Read Deans 6th post near the bottom of this page to get an idea of what it can do for the 7's. http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/2/811728/ShowThread.aspx
darkside
Ok, thanks. I was more looking towards something I could do in a few hours so I'm not without my RFs for more than a day[] even though I have heard countless amazing things about Dean's xovers. Speedball
Maybe there is something simple that could be done.......?
Deang
The crossover is on a PCB, mounted on the rear of the terminal cup. Remove the cup, and get the cap values off the stock parts -- they should be clearly marked. Replace series caps for horn with Kimbers, Auricaps, or Sonicaps. You don't really have to do anything else, though I replace the stock resistors with Mills. Leave the inductors alone.
darkside
Sweet! Thanks Dean. Sounds like a plan and definitely a holiday break project. Just some quick questions, is there any type of seal around the terminal cup that I have to replace after removing it? Also, need the screws just be slightly tight after re-installation or does it not matter, just so long as the wood doesn' crack? Thanks again
Deang
Older Reference stuff used torx bit #20, you'll need to check. You may have to remove the horn so you can disconnect the wiring from the HF driver. There is a foam gasket, but it's part of the terminal cup -- you won't need to replace it. Let common sense prevail when tightening the screws back down -- I would just snug them down good, no need to get carried away. Terminal cup and horn are both plastic afterall. Go with the Kimbers from www.partsexpress.com
darkside
Alright, will do. Definitely. Thanks Dean.

darkside
It might be awhile... but definitely a go!
darkside
There's a catch... The RF-15 xovers each use 3 caps each, one1.8uF cap, one 18uF cap, and one 20uF cap. Kimber make's caps only upto 15uF and Auricaps only go to 18uF on PE. What should I do? I'dprefer not to use any other brands unless someone says such and such abrand is good too... I'll have pics sometime later today. First thing is my sub []...G'night!!!!
colterphoto1
Leave em alone! You have a 5 year warranty on those speakers- UNTIL you modify them.....
ben.
Have at em! What's the worst that could happen - pop a couple drivers? They're only RF-15's! As Dean said let common sense prevail and you'll learn something about what you're hearing in the process.
darkside
Actually Colter, I bought them new from some dude off ebay and asfar as I know, they have no official warranty on them... Sorry to goagainst your wisdom. Ben: they are not only RF-15s, seriously, that is a slap in the face to me. They are the best speakers my familyowns as of right now and if they blow or something bad happens, I willnot be very happy...but whatever, they are just speakers... Anyways, anyone know where I can get good 18uF and 20uF caps?

If they're that dear to you then leave em alone. I only meant that replacement parts shouldn't be too costly if you destroy something. Didn't mean to besmirch your family honor. darkside
Oh, sorry it came across that way[:$]. It was more of...hmm...I dunno. You see, to me, they are these amazing wonders, and of course I want tobetter them. I guess that you came across more as saying that they'rewere just RF-15s and not like 7s or 83s or Heritage and thuswere not much at all. You know what I mean? I guess it was an error onmy part. But, yeah I still definitely want to mod them. Besides, thesub just needs to be carpeted and then I can move on the RFs[] WOO!![Y][Y][Y]
ben.
I gotcha man! Start simple and you won't wreck em.
darkside
Definitely. But, once again, anyone know where to find 18uf and 20uf caps that are good? Stupid ferrad measurements. Are dayton or jantzen caps any better than stock?
