Colter needs Tubes

It's just not tubes. Power deviations burn up a lot of nice equipment. After a good storm, or even up to a couple of weeks after a good storm I'm busy as can be making estimates and repairs. I see very little tube equipment. It's proportional I'm sure.

Power strips/surge protectors are basically a waste of money. More for convenience. Very few of them actually protect against fluctuations and surges. Low voltage is just as much a problem as are spikes. Ask about any line tech. You will get the same answer.

A good power conditioner helps as long as it is a quality unit that has voltage regulators built in it.

Michael,

I guess the ref counted you down and out prematurely. Miss K called around 11:00 last night and wondered it we were going to try for this evening on the tube auditions. I guess she's retracted the claws and is still wanting to say hi. YOU lucky dog! Must be living under a lucky star this month. She saw your "Glamour Shot" and still wants to meet.

I'll have you guys know that despite my gruff exterior, I'm really a NICE guy when it comes to the ladies. That's why I've been finishing last. I just need one GOOD girl though, ya know?

I have no doubt !

Yep you need a good one, not a wild one, I would guess you have seen your share of the wild side.[;)]

Meester Colter, It's not tubes but maybe someday I can swing by with a QSC amp, it sounds great with Klipsch. Of course you being a pro sound man maybe you have already heard them.

Harry-O, This Spring I need to hook up with you to get a listen as well, my gosh you are basically a hop skip and jump away. Pat

Michael -- if you have any interest, I will be selling my Velez 300B amp and Bottlehead Foreplay pre in due time. I'm about 2 hours west of Indy, and you're welcome for a listen someday, if you'd like. Hate to sell them, but I need to downsize...

I've got a QSC 1400 in the PA rack. Also a Crown Microtech 1200, JBL , and BGW....[:o]

But I get first pick of Harry's excess lady friends. [:P]

And NO Dtel, not many wild ones, not enough anyway [;)]

HarryO showed up here about 6:45 with a tube CD player, pre and power amp. We got it all hooked up but first gave my little HK430 a whirl on some tunes to acclimate to that SS sound.

I ran through some of my faves, BS&T for horns and strings, Zep, Purple, Yes, Miles, Steely Dan (note: NO Diana Krall). Listened to the smoothness of strings, bite of horns, Marshallness of JP's guitar, and others. Some nuances noted were the attack of horns seemed more lifelike, the sound of drumstick on skin and particuarly kick drums seemed more realistic. Plenty of low end- plenty- and they sounded REALLY GREAT at lower volumes. I listen at low volumes a lot and the realism of this setup was much preferable than my SS at conversational levels.

After quite a bit of very pleasureable listening on the tube setup through my unaltered Khorns in the photo gallery, we wound up with a tune off the Robert Cray Best Of cd. Very nice number, kind of a Carusso (sp) beat. Harry played that one twice to get it impriinted on our hearing, then we swapped back to the HK very quickly. Even with the $1200 tube CD player, the guitar seemed thin and lifeless, drums lacked their tension, Cray's voice in the upper registers sounded strained.

I can have both. I have my Yammie receiver with the LS and CW's for HT. I have plenty of S/S for the LSI's and MCM stacks.

Why not have a dedicated room for the Khorns, some tubes, a nice CD player, and that Thorens TT that doesn't play well in the HT room?

This is gonna be fun. Now the search is on for an entry level piece. Perhaps an integrated...

Just for fun I gave the HT a workout with Casino Royale chase scene and my fave Yes Symphonic cut Starship Trooper. There was a stack of DVD's on the THX subs that we shook to the ground. Being an old military guy, Harry would never admit to flinching, but I saw him twitch a couple of times when those subs and LS hit HARD!

Thanks for stopping by HarryO- Tubes Night was a good time. I can't
remember a more enjoyable evening of listening, really listening intently with
a friend who enjoyed my same taste in music. [:D][Y]

Well, I just got home. I think my jeans are still vibrating from the twin THX subs and LaScala/Cornwall surround. Flinched my a.., I darned near jumped out of the nice HT seating. Killer Michael!! Nothing less. The CD stack didn't only fall to the floor, it was actually rotating counterclockwise before it crashed to the floor.

I had a great time Michael. Thanks for having me over. It was a pleasure listening to the vintage KHorns in a room that could do the old gents justice. Any nicer it would have to been engineered for them. Glad that you could do the A/B comparison. IMHO tubes are almost a necessity for the Heritage Ks. Better drive, and all kinds of words like lifelike, presence, and stuff like that. Just me maybe.

Hey, I think I lost a crown to the Home Theater. Keep an eye out for it if you think about it.

and BTW, if you want to trash out your storage, let me know. I'll gladly take it off your hands.
