Work hard, play harder

I haven't been on much since becoming the Director of Operations at
work. A lot of responsibility and hours associated with our migration
to a new software system that ties sales, accounting, warehouse,
shipping, receiving and inventory all into a real time package. The
upside to the new job is a little thing called discretionary Income. So
to that end my wife got a new ring last night and I picked up this
McIntosh C36 pre to try. So far so good. There is more bottom end but
the phono stage may not cut it over the long haul. For now, I'm
enjoying it.

I always love looking at your gear. :) If you don't mind my asking, what application software maker would that be?

Mike

Not to bore you but the package is an

entire suite of supply chain modules offered by IBS including inventory

and warehouse management, sales and order management, accounting and

finance, and multi-language and multi-currency operating on single

server for our entire enterprise of over 1,500 employees spread among

70 branches throughout the US and Mexico..

Phono stage?

I don't have the exact schematic for that unit, but I do have a schematic from a similar McIntosh model.

The phono preamp starts out with the signal going through a polarized electrolytic capacitor with no film bypass. The phono stage is all discrete, but has a polarized electrolytic capacitor with no film bypass for an output coupling cap.

This is responsible for the ' warm and fuzzy' sound.

If you want a clean and detailed soundstage all you need to do is upgrade the caps in the signal path.

McIntosh will provide a no-charge copy of the service manual if you call them and have the model number and serial number handy.

Thanks, I will have to check into that. I've got an assortment to try.

Ahh, my favorite SS Mac pre...I fell in love with the C36 the first time I saw one back in the early '90s. A number of years ago I owned a used MC7200 and was controlling it with my '84 Carver C-4000 preamp...I loved the C-4000 along with my other Carver amps, but when I upgraded to McIntosh, I wanted a Mac pre of similar convenience features of the C-4000; for me, the C36 was the ticket. I found a clean C36 on eBay and placed a bid...and lost by only a few dollars![:@] Having already sold off all my Carver gear due to unfortunant financial circumstances, I ended up buying a much cheaper AMC CVT 1030s tube preamp which I didn't keep long; quality control was an issue but it sounded pretty good considering, and was my first introduction to vacuum tubes!

Someday I'd like to have a second system...maybe I'll get back to McIntosh components again when my budget allows and find another C36 and a matching amp. Enjoy yours, Wardsweb![Y]
