The only good ones I have seen so far, and they ain't that great, are:

No Country for Old Men

Mr. Brooks

Gone Baby Gone

Live Free or Die Harder

Spidey 3

The Lives of Others

Notes on a Scandal is very good (but was it 2007?)

Nothing so far that has the power of Downfall, American Beauty, Crash, Million Dollar Baby, Mystic River, Unforgiven or Brokeback Mountain. What do you think? What are the can't miss movies of 2007?

Good thread. A few more for the list...

Bourne Supremecy - Very nice work for the third in the series. Typically they get worse, this is at least as good, if not better...

Michael Clayton - Good flick

Transformers

I would also put Casino Royale on the list, that is if you're including the dvd release date (Mar 2007) , rather than the film release date (Nov 2006)...

I haven't seen a ton of new movies this year. So far my favorite has been Harry Potter 5, with Pirates of the Carriebean 3 in close 2nd. I also enjoyed Bourne Supremecy. Didn't really care for Spidey 3.

There are some movies that look good that are just coming out, or coming soon that I am looking forward to :

Sweeney Todd

I am Legend

Atonement

The academy awards bait usually wait until the very end of the year.

Oh geesh....

I've seen a ton of movies and wouldn't
know where to start.[:$] I watch everything from the big budget
popcorn movies to the little known indy's.

For the sake of this thread, I'll give my brief 2cents on a few big and small that I really, really liked.

The biggies:

Bourne Ultimatum=Absolutely superb 5 stars (maybe my all time favorite of the secret agent/spy genre)

Transformers= From a guy who grew up before the transformer era, I loved it= 5 stars

The bunch including Spidey, Potter, Pirates are two notches lower. Liked 'em, but nowhere near 5 stars.

Wild Hogs= My wife and I laughed out butts off

Oceans 13= A huge surprise because I had VERY low expectations, but I loved it.

The Lesser Knowns:

Rescue Dawn=Outstanding Bale performance, outstanding movie

Mr. Brooks= I agree with the above. Possibly the best Costner movie in 10+ years

1408= loved it

The Lookout= A most excellent small budget film most have probably never heard of

I loved Sweeney Todd. But then I saw 3:10 to Yuma. That one just moved to the top of my list. I also saw Atonement. It was OK, not great. No Country for old men was also excellent, but still behind Sweeney Todd and 3:10 to Yuma.

I am looking forward to both Charlie Wilson's War and Eastern Promises. Also excited about There Will Be Blood.

I think the best movie I've seen in a long time is Apocalypto. I believe that it's a 2007 release. Mark

I have had this movie in my hands at least twice at the local video rental shop. I'll try to actually check out w/it next time! Thanks, Mark.

Nope, Apocalypto was from '06, as was Notes on a Scandal, which was mentioned earlier. Both were up for awards last year, although Mel Gibson's Apocalypto didn't get as much attention as it deserved, probably because of his DUI arrest and anti-semetic rant.

I'm looking forward to seeing The Great Debaters and There Will Be Blood, both look good.

  • 2 weeks later...

I saw "La Vie en Rose", the life story of Edith Piaf, and wow its good.

The French actress who plays her is stunning-- she deserves an Oscar playing such a tragic figure with so many ups and downs in her life. She loses so many people that are close to her, and she has a horrible childhood of poverty, abandonment, and she was raised in a bordello. She is discovered singing for her supper on the streetsm but her talent was undeniable.

The soundtrack and sound is lush and the original vocals are crystal clear -- what a voice.

She won't get the Oscar because its a foreign film with subtitles, but I can't remember a more affecting perfomance -- very sad but inspiring--

Best of the '07 for me--
