Chris A
And apparently a really nice guy. Ray Charles mentioned that the only person that could stay in the room with Art Tatum was Oscar. Ray called Tatum "God over in the corner." He wanted to count his fingers... Chris A.
Marvel
Snobby jazz critics didn't like Oscar because he played so cleanly, too. Truly one of the greats.
oldtimer
Sad to see another great go. I have never been disappointed listening to his recordings, most of them live.
Dflip
His talent will be missed. I still can see him playing for the audience when he awarded an Honourary Doctorite in Music from the University of Toronto. It was the same day I graduated from the Faculty of Education at U. of T. We were lucky enough to have our commencement activities at the same time as the Faculty of Music, so we were treated to four songs by Oscar. I just closed my eyes and took in his wonderful talent. I still treasure that opportunity to hear him play in 1986.
