Surge Protectors

I"m pleased with my Tripp Lite Isobar Ultra units. They do a good job and they're not expensive. I've got an Ultra 6 (6 outlets) for the sub and power amp and (plugged into a different outlet) an Ultra 8 (8 outlets) for the TV, DVD, VCR, receiver, tape deck and turntable. These units have filters for incoming AC as well as filters between outlets (3 banks with the Ultra 6 and 4 filter banks with the Ultra 8), which is good for keeping digital noise from the DVD/CD player and the Class D power amp from getting into the other components. It's meant to prevent digital line noise from printers causing problems with computers connected to the same circuit.

That digital noise is not imaginary. Before I had an FM antenna with a shielded cable, you could hear a buzzing sound on FM while a CD was loading. The shielded cable that came with the better antenna I'm using now fixed that, as far as it was picking it up through the air.

The protectors are described as commercial grade and have metal cases so they won't melt in the case of a severe blast of energy coming into them. There's a slightly audible sound improvement over no suppressors. The difference is subtle, except for the DVD noise reduction, but it's easy to see that the blacks on TV are now noticeably deeper black.

I would have to advise against the Monster surge suppressor, one of the A/V shops near my house has one on display that is fried. They said it happened without even taking a surge and they stopped selling them.

I have a Panamax along with a whole house surge supressor and Hubbell surge suppression receptacles on seperate 20 amp circuits. If a surge hits any of my equipment it would be a miracle.

You cannot go wrong with Tripp-Lite products. They have been used in professional power applications for years. I have the equivilent of this model in black: http://www.tripplite.com/products/product.cfm?productID=3498 but I found it for around $100 or so. No noise to speak of. I use http://www.tripplite.com/products/product.cfm?productID=94 for my subwoofer (found it for $30 or so on the internet), again no noise. Highly reccomended.
