  1. By the way, I do not use the Scott enclosures. I have my amps set up in semi-protected racks, and instead I made dust covers for them. I just take off the dust covers when I turn them on, and use them fully exposed. So, the fit shouldn't matter. I assume tight fit meant by height.
  2. Perfect info guys. This is about what I expected. If I have to incur an $80.00 bill every couple of years, no problem. I would bet the things probably last many many years anyhow, as my amps came with some original tubes. Well, I think I know what my next upgrade is going to be. More of the same. Thanks
  3. I have found my Las to be very accomodating. Right now I have them in a room about 16 x 40 (basement), on the long wall about 15 feet apart. I have also used them at an outdoor party around 100 feet apart at a private lake. Either way they stage and impress. I can say that outdoors, the further you get away from them, the better they sound. So they are good up close, and as sound projection devices. I always thought their beauty lies in their flexibility (IMHO). Get 'em.
  4. I'm looking at LK-72s and 299Ds. They use the harder to come by 7591s. The question is how hard are these to come by, really? How often do they need to be replaced? What substitutes can be used? I have not replaced any tubes in either of my other amps, everything still going strong. Final question. How much do they cost relative to the 7189 / EL84s ? The damn 222Ds (which I would REALLY like) are going for MUCH more money. Just looking for a little more power, love the Scotts, and see some potential candidates out there. Thanks for the info.
  5. Mine are black also. Not my favorite finish by any means, but they are mint and the sound is unbelievable. I got them because of proximity and how nice they were. You can live with black if you have to. I had to pay almost twice as much as that BIN that disappeared. What a deal. I hope the seller pulls them for you. Good luck. The lights should be out in the HT anyway. So what if they are black, right?
  6. I agree. I can only listen to that for awhile. A marketable style put out there at the right time. Sorry, but shallow to me. Decent fidelity on the recording, but the music loses my attention eventually. I also agree that it escapes me what is missing. But something definitely is. Maybe too much of the same.
  7. Strategies abound. But the seller usually wins. I wish I had some decent stuff to sell. Of particular interest are the justifications made for early bidding. Personally, I wouldn't do it, but I understand. From personal experience, I would just snipe. I am WAY too busy to PLAY on ebay. It is not a sport or toy, or game to me. I use Ebay to acquire stuff for a purpose. I am not satisfied to lose due to lack of performance on my part. This is just my opinion, but the best strategy is to shut up, snipe, and move on to the next item. No bids otherwise. Of course as said, it is a big world. We all have room to do our thing.
  8. T2K, Craig had it, by guts I meant power. The 299 is significantly more powerful than the 222. However, I use the 222 on the Las which are more sensitive than the corns. Both systems sound great. 222 and 299 have different sounds and I love both. By the way, I got "guts" from Craig. He mentioned it to me a long time ago. My lingo would have been "balls" !!
  9. Ryan, I have auricaps throughout both my Scotts. I only know that they sound great and 10 times better than before they were rebuilt. I have not had the opportunity to hear the other types of caps in Scott equipment. I also have a crisp clean top end. If it could get better in these 40 year old units I would be amazed. As it is, when I first got these amps back, it was like I got a new set of tweeters in the corns. I understand you have heard all the different types of caps in these units. I had to make a call on parts and asked for auricaps. I bet I could have done worse. Thanks for the clarification.
  10. Ryan, I agree the 222 is a sleeper. It sounds great, but lacks the guts of my 299. Still I love it. I have a question. YOu said earlier "Nasty auricaps". What is so nasty about them? I heard they were very good caps.
  11. Geography is exactly why I got the pair I did (and price). Because of their size, they aren't livingroom speakers anyhow in my situation. So I didn't need a pristine pair. Still these Las are mint, no knicks at all and sharp corners. Just tiny flakes of paint coming off in a couple of places. It looks like they dried out a bit on top over the years. I would love Khorns, and would buy them in a minute if I had the right room. I have moved numerous times and never really had the perfect room. On the other hand, the Las are mobile and can be placed anywhere. A big advantage. They also have the same drivers, just a compromised bass horn. I recommend looking into Las if the room isn't just right. They are readily available at decent prices, nice or ugly (for the refinishing guy). Good Luck.
  12. A comment on the Black. I have black LaScalas all original. It seems to me that the black Laquer finish does not hold up as well as a wood veneer finish. After all it is just paint. My corns and heresys can be touched up easily because they are veneers. I have a couple of places where the paint came off on the Las. Just little spots here and there. But it really ruins the finish because you can not touch them up easily without it showing up. I love my Las but I wasn't searching for a black pair. They just came up in my area so I got them. I know the black laquer can look good when new, but I recommend a wood veneer finish instead for longevity.
  13. You are correct. Ryan included. I have never heard one of his amps though, but I am sure he does reputable work. His posts show his knowledge of Scott equipment is certainly there. I could have spent way less on my rebuilds. I made my parts choices and am very satisfied the more I listen. I think all these professional rebuilds will eventually begin to recycle back to the market as most things do when people move up or on. That's all to our benefit, and maybe you can score a nicely priced unit already rebuilt.
  14. My Las have a similar initialing on the labels, and they are '90s. Those fortes could not be an orignal pair. He has 0 feedback. Done.
  15. I got both of mine listed below over the summer last year. Since then, I've seen people pay nearly triple what they went for then. It's clear that these old designs, when updated, are able to cost effectively bridge the gap between today's afforable S/S and the almost unaffordable tube designs. Great upper middle of the road stuff optimized for Klipsch speakers. I just wonder if the people buying these units for these higher prices are going by what they are reading, or if they really know what they are getting. A $600 Scott 299 will be almost $1000 if rebuilt like mine. I don't know if I'd go that high for a 299. For $1000, I would look for something with a little more guts like the 296s that have been coming up. I predict some nice resales of rebuilt Scotts coming up over the next year as folks move on to their next level in the progression. I hope we see the Craig ones here first.
  16. I know most might not do this, but I use a DBX-1215 EQ that can take up some of the slack on the bottom end. With the tube amp and correct room placement I do not notice a large disparity in bass. They do not go as low as my corn system, but they are far more flexible than a pair of KHorns unless you have the perfect room dimensions. The placement mentioned above is what I use, and the DBX takes care of the rest. OK, now I will probably get slammed for using an EQ, but it is what I enjoy and it works. That's why I bought two of them.
  17. Hey Gary, Mopar Dave has a post over in Troubleshooting that says he removed an ERR-01 from his 555es. In case you didn't already see it.
  18. WHat specifically did you do to get rid of the ERR-01. GaryMD in the 2-Ch forum has the same problem with his 555es. We are waiting to find out from SONY what the issue is. They say they may not be able to fix it, but have not identified the cause. Thanks
  19. Have the 2 listed below. Just sent Craig a Scott 350B tuner for check out and rebuild. So eventually will 3 NOS Valves units. Amps sound great, use them almost every day.
  20. Quick comment. The SONY SACD 555 es is MUCH better than the 222. I have the 222 and it is a darn good player, no complaints. But the 555 is head and shoulders better. I played with one that I might be acquiring. The 222 has a noisy carriage compared to the 555, but definitely plays with crisp clean clarity. I have noticed an incremental improvement in my system, which is good. It has intuitive, and easy to use controls as well. I thought I got a good deal at $328.00. Definitely buy for $290. You'll be satisfied. But nothing compared to a 555.
  21. Remember when they did the "Banana Man" ?
  22. I am jealous of all you guys going to smilin's. Hope you all have a blast! Take pictures of the people as well as the equipment so we can see who is who, and who has what. Craig, hope your father gets well soon. My parents are getting elderly and live up in Syracuse. I know how I'd feel. Take it easy buddy. Good luck with everything. Hope you get to Smilin's.
