  1. Guys, Thanks for the information and history lesson. All very interesting, and informative. I didn't think my ears were lying to me. Gil, you set up the Klipsch model comparsion party and I'll bring all of mine. That would be a blast. Rent a BIG hall though. I think you'd get some serious attendance if you advertised. I agree that if you could assemble the various generations of Klipsch Heritage models in one place you'd probably hear some differences but nothing really major. They seem to have kept their basic personalities intact over the years with subtle improvements. Fellas, I have a nice pair of those "rare" vert cornwalls with the alnico magnets. Anyone interested in trading, say, a pair of 1980 horizotal corns for them ??? Just kidding. Too early to hook the big fish on this one.
  2. Another look at the pictures does reveal a new looking power cap. I take back what I posted above. Garymd. I have the same situation as you. I bought mine at a less than optimal price to begin with on ebay, supposedly already rebuilt. When my NosValves rebuilt 222 kicked its butt, I knew it was not what it could be. So it went to Craig. He is returning it to me this week in fact. I definitely paid a pretty penny in total. But I got the Cadillac job with auricaps, new cans, bias mod, plus a bunch of other critical part changeouts. For what I had done I think I got a very good deal. When you add it all up, I agree the 850 price is high. But not so bad if your talking 850 Canadian / 638 US.
  3. Whoa, just read the add again. Twice he refers to Canadian currency. Let's do the math. The exchange rate today is .75154. He wants 850.00. If he means Canadian.... How about $638.80 ?
  4. It looks like it's in near mint condition, but I've read a few bad reviews on the VTV jobs (cheap parts). I don't know what everyone's experieince with them is. Are they supposed to be good? He should have an under-chassis shot if the job is so good. Let everyone see the parts and work. The so called new power cap looks old and original. They may have done an under chassis patch and then left it there. When all is said and done, $850.00 seems high.
  5. Can someone please explain the difference between the alnico drivers and the other types that have existed in the Heritage products? And what are used in the IIs (IE. Heresy IIs, Cornwall IIs) ? I always hear that folks are interested in cornwalls with alnico drivers. Why are they considered better (or worse) from a technical standpoint? What do people think sound best in cornwalls and Heresys? I have stated that the non-alnico driven horizontal oriented cornwalls I had (1980) sounded better to me than the alnicos in vertical orientation I have now (1973). What are other people's experience and opinion on this? Has there ever been a preferred woofer in a cornwall, or have they basically been the same over the years?
  6. Sorry for the short answer but have to go to a meeting. I have posted more detailed info in the other cornwall threads that ran late last week. I have had both style was NOT better in the case I had. The horiz were '80s and sounded better at low volumes. At higher volumes almost no detectable difference. The vert horns made no noticeable difference. I've had them for many years now. I know I read different opinions on this, but those are my facts. I have also said and do believe that the advantages of the vert orientation are limited to the the ability to lay them down. Laying them down I have found does change the sound characteristics. You can get more bass laying them down. As far as imaging goes, I have REALLY tested the verts vs. horiz. over the years I had both. I ended up keeping the verts because my buddy wanted his '80 horiz. back. So I traded them back after I had them for around 10 years. Neither pair imaged any better than the other. In truth, my heresys image way better than either pair of corns I have had, and still have. The verts never sounded quite as good, but are still excellent. As I have said before, they are excellent, but not as good as newer corns out there. I would never trade a pair of '80 horiz. for older alnico verts. No No No. Sorry all you alnico fans. Just telling it like it is at my house.
  7. Sounds like it was a good show. It also sounds like the guys are getting old. I still really like them though. They were pretty good pioneers in fidelity back in their hey day. Dan recordings always sounded a little higher in fidelity than most other recordings at the time. That was just after I got into Klipsch as a youngster. KamaKiriad is a DF solo album that was one of his best if not his best.
  8. I'll check mine tonight and see what stamps are on them.
  9. I checked them out. They look a little different than the ones I have. Mine are the decorator models and the cossovers are mounted on the side not front. Those do look nice though. It looks like a woofer may have been replaced. One looks much newer than the other. One warning as I posted yesterday. I had '80 horiz. corns, and the '73s verts. listed below and had them on speakers A/B so they could be played individually against one another. The newer ones were definitely better at low volumes. No difference when loud however. All I am saying is that I see folks rave about the so called rare vert setup and older drivers. You may be disappointed spending extra money before you listen to them thinking they are better. They will be better than not having corns in the first place of course, but not better than a newer pair, probably, or to replace a newer pair. I do think the vert horn setup can be an advantage because you can lay them down. It does change the characteristic sound. But I question the so called advantages of the older drivers. I traded the '80s back to the friend I got them from for his sentimental reasons, and kept the '73s. They are excellent, don't get me wrong. But I had both, and those are my comments. By the way, I have mine laying on their sides. They sound awesome that way. They are about as tall as Heresys in that setup, but with a ton more base. I think they produce more base laying down as opposed to being on the risers which are on mine. The NosValves Scott 222 and CD player is on top of one. Looks and sounds great! Those '73s on the Bay look really nice. Whoever gets them will be in for a real treat. Good Luck all.
  10. At one point I had 2 pairs of corns simultaneously. A 1980 horizontal pair and the '73 verts listed below. I used to have them connected on speakers A and B of the same amp. So I was able to compare pretty exactly. My results are a little different. Both pairs sounded very much alike. Some people may not have noticed any differences. However, to the trained Klipsch ear there was a slight difference. The 1980s corns always outperformed the older models at very low to moderately low volumes in overall sound quality. Now, not by much, but noticeable. When you turned it up some, the differences seemed to minimize, almost go away. It seems the newer pair just had that slightly better sound quality at the lower volumes. Now, I am not saying the old verts were no good. Not that at all. I ended up keeping them, and they are in my livingroom. They sound absolutely excellent. Especially since I drive them now with that little Scott 222 below. So there is another comment for whatever it is worth.
  11. One thing I don't think was mentioned. You cable should be grounded either to your electrical system ground rod outdoors or to the water meter bonding indoors where your electrical system grounds. Either way there should be a cable company interface (F-81 barrel type connection with ground lug) somewhere in your cable line that gounds the shield in the cable. Make sure this is done properly, or at all. Satellite systems included should have the same grounding setup.
  12. To all the Heresy fans. This week seems to be Heresy week on E-Bay. The usual "Klipsch" search brings up more really nice pairs of Heresys than I can ever remember seeing all at once. Walnut, many Oak. Look close. At least 3-4 pairs are near perfect. Seems like summer time was K-Horn unload time on E-Bay. Now it's Heresy days.
  13. I don't have any experience with Fortes. However, please check out Wilsonaudio.com, and go to tech notes and room acoustics. It describes exactly what you are looking for with room diagrams and speaker placements. It discusses the +/- of each. Good stuff. However, you will be surprised at what you read. I rearranged my system and got the speakers out of the corners, and along the long wall as recommended. Best thing I ever did. But I won't try to sell that arrangement. Read on, and see what you think.
  14. Here's a stupid one that really works. Yawn ! Clear your ears and then listen again. It'll work. It's cheap to.
  15. Craig, Sounds good to me. If the 299 will end up better than that little 222, I'll be an even happier guy. It will be quite a house having these combinations. I won't know which room to sit down in. On the "corner" comment with cornwalls. I have had corns for many years. Consequently, they have been played in a few different houses and different type of rooms. I was always a corner guy years ago. Definitely sound good in corners with a toed in sweetspot. But I learned for my best sound experience with corns in the places I've had them has been playing the wide side of a rectangular room as the sound stage with the speakers on the long wall out of the corners. So you can walk "outside" the speakers and hear all the way around the extremities of the horns. I toe in to approximately the width of the sofa. The wide stage lets the base envelop the room. I usually set one speaker and move the other either closer or further away until the image is there. I was telling Craig that I found this pair of Heresys I picked up image better than the corns. Maybe no secret. I haven't had Heresys in a long time, and the corns are pretty old. But the configuration I mention above is what I use, and it sounds better than corner placement to me. I know it's a pain to change the wiring all around, but you may want to give it a try. It's detailed with diagrams on the Wilsonaudio.com under technotes / room acoustics.
  16. Guys, Yesterday I received my 222 back from Craig after the full rebuild job. That little amp is absolutely marvelous. It easily out details my 299, which in fact I just sent to Craig this morning for the same Auri-cap job. Ryan, I think you mentioned it would out-duel the 299 some time ago. Well, it does. Granted, it doesn't have the same balls, but almost. I don't mean to knock the 299s by the way. The 222 lacks some of the controls we all like. But as a basic power amp, it's wonderful. I have the 222 driving the corns. Like I told Craig, I can't wait for the weekend to relax, grill, BEER, and really let it bleed. Been working too hard. I am totally satisfied with Craig's pretty work, and knowledge of how to get it right. Worth every penny. I can't wait for the 299 to get back for the LaScalas. I imagine if those kits are done right, they would awesome as well. Enjoy.
  17. How about sharing some pics of the homemades?
  18. In answer to your question, no Heresys with a sub are not in the same league as cornwalls. But you make like the sound. I have both, see below. Unless the the room is really small and can't fit the corns, that would be my only reason for choosing Heresys over corns, if you can only have one or the other. My advice though is to get the Heresys just to get into the game. The sub will help and the system will probably sound good. I agree with what's above. You can either trade the Heresys or have both eventually. You won't lose by getting them. Watch on Ebay for a pair of corns you can drive to get. Enjoy.
  19. Colleen, Nice move backing out of the deal. I got all my gear on EBay, and "knock on wood" have met up with respectable sellers each time. One of the things I always look at is WHERE the seller is from for various reasons (shipping, etc.). If I read your post correctly, the seller listed Mn. but actually lives in Germany. I take that as major misrepresentation. Do as you will.
  20. Smells like a perfect opportunity to take the Chorus IIs outside.
  21. Couldn't help but notice there's a website for cabinets for Scott equipment???? Can I get the URL? I have a 222 with no protection. Thanks
  22. Reversing the plug to the amp fixed it. Thanks
  23. Thanks. I ordered the standard bronze Klipsch logos for the heresys, but parts said they no longer carried the PWK cornwall logos. Disappointing.
