  1. I can't speak for the 05 models. However, I have a 3801 and my friend purchased the 2801. There is a big difference as far as I can tell. Not so much in connectability, but in terms of power and fullness. Not much difference in specs, but imo a big difference in sound.
  2. Personally, I see no value to the s/n tags, assuming the speakers are intact. I just refinished a pair of fortes and I noticed that while the tags were on and they did have consecutive s/n numbers, they were old and faded and starting to fall off. I left them on, but what are you supposed to do. Laminate them? Seems to be an important issue to some, as far as I'm concerned, if they look and sound good, it shouldn't affect the value.
  3. Not sure how they are with tubes, but they are a great pair of speakers. I run mine with a denon. 550 is a real fair price, especially so if they are in good condition.
  4. I've been doing something similar this week. I stripped a pair of oiled oak fortes and stained them natural cherry. I hadto sand the speakers three times with a palm sander, using 60,then 100,then150 grit paper. Be careful, the wood is only a veneer, there is only so far you can go,keep the sander moving. I then used a natural cherry stain/poly combination by minwax. This was the first time I used this product and I was pleased with it. Easy to use, brush on. Three coats and they look excellent.
  5. Sorry,didn't clarify.Klfc7.
  6. BY the way,as far as recievers, I have a denon 3801. Current version of that is the 3805. Couldn't be more happy with it. Unless I win the lottery that is.
  7. I also have klf 20's up front. A c7 in the center and rb75s in the rear. So far, no sub. I have no intention of getting one either. My h.t. does double duty as my living room and the placement of a sub would be difficult. Besides which, all the pictures in the house vibrate already without one. I guess what i'm getting at is, with the klf20s, I'd add the other 3 channels and then decide if a sub is needed.
  8. Thanks guys. The sherwood looks like it. For 79$ it can't hurt to stop at c.c. and pick one up. Can always return it if need be.
  9. I'm in the process of setting up a pair of forteII in the bedroom, to be used with just the digital cable radio as a source. Can anybody recommend a decent, yet cheap(oxymoron,i know) 2 channel reciever. It's been a long time since I've looked at any.
  10. Without a doubt keeping the 75s. After 11 yrs. of nagging about my habit, she's now feeding it. No need to discourage this. Now thinking about keeping the klf and rb75 as a 5 channel system and possibly using the forte for a two channel bedroom system. Although my gut tells me that fortes in the bedroom will certainly not meet the WAF. I'll try to sell this idea slowly and cautiously over the next couple weeks. If it doesn't work,I'll have one killer garage system. I do think however that I will eventually replace the 3 klf with 3 rb75. I like the 75s more each time I listen to them. They really are a great speaker.
  11. Isn't it funny how you can go from not enough speakers to way too many without even realizing it. Then again, maybe there isn't any such thing as enough. If there was, we wouldn't be hanging around here.
  12. Haha. must have hit the wrong button at some point. It's on the What a klipsch weekend thread.
  13. The probem is, I don't have the room for four large floorstanders. Also, my musical taste is a bit schizophrenic. The rb75s shine in areas where the others don't. I'm initially thinking about keeping the Forte. Selling the 3 klf. Adding 3 more rb 75. This way, I'll have a five channel setup for movies and music that's a little more, "musical", for lack of a better term. I could let the front rb75 set on top of the Forte. I could then place a switch between the forte and 75s. This would allow me to switch to the fortes when I'm in the mood to listen to things way too loud.
  14. Not asking a specific question or anything, just wanted to share the events of this weekend with a group of people who will appreciate it. For the last 5 yrs. I've had a klf/rf ht setup. About 6 months ago, when we relocated the living/ entertainment room, I had to part with my rf 3s I was using as rears. I did this reluctantly, with the idea that as soon as extra funds became availible, I'd purchase bookshelf speakers to put where the rf3s departed due to space. Well, on Thursday, a customer of mine gives me a pair of forte II they no longer wanted. Perfect shape mechanicly and sonicly, just need a good cabinet cleaning. As if that wasn't enough, on Friday, the doorbell rings and there stands the U.P.S. man with two decent sized boxes. My wife is standing there with a !@#$ eating grin. It turns out that she got me a pair of rb75s for Christmas. So here I sit, after midnight, flipping speaker wire back and forth between a pair of klf20,ForteII,and rb75,as well as one klf c7. Trying to decide how to arrange all this. They sound different from each other, but they all sound excellent. I'm going to have to make some decisions on which ones to get rid of and what to add to make one matched setup. I know this is not the biggest problem one could have, but I got to say, the thought of parting with any of them is a bit gut wrentching. Any suggestions?
  15. No, it's not factory black. Previous owner attempted to fix a WAF issue by changing the color.
  16. Thanks for the info. I couldn't tell if it was real veneer or the vinyl print variety. The paint that was used didn't adhere that well and is flaking off with the scrape of a fingernail. When I get the time it looks like I have a weekend project. As far as sound, after about 30 mins. of listening, I think I like these better than my beloved klf 20s.
  17. I finally got lucky. I was given a pair of forte II by a customer who no longer wanted them. They are in perfect working order, however they need some cosmetic work. They were originally oak but were painted over in black(not that bad of a job). I was wondering if anybody knows if the finish on these is vinyl or veneer. I looked up the info on the website to no avail. I thought I might ask before I go scratching away with a screwdriver to find out. Thanks in advance.
  18. Couldn't agree more. I have the 20's and c7 up front. The only regret I have is that I didn't buy another pair while they were availible. Funny thing is, when I demo'd them, the store also had the new rf and rp lines along with them. To my ears, the klfs were far better than the newer lines which were significantly higher in price. I now find myself scouring classifieds searching for a pair of 20s or 30s. The only ones that seem to show up are on the other side of the country or in terrible condition. Oh well, sooner or later a pair is bound to show up.
  19. I've had a sony 400 for about 5 years now. It gets used about 2 hrs a day on average. So far, no problems sound or mechanism-wise. The only regret I have is that I should have gotten the one with the lcd display on the remote that gives you the disc list. It gets a little difficult seeing the display from 15 ft. away. Once you get past the initial loading and programming of disc info., you'll wonder why you didn't throw out all those cd cases years ago. good luck.
  20. Thank you very much for your help. I'm positive its the tweeters and not the mids. Out of curiosity, when I take the tweeter assembly apart, will i be able to tell visually if it's a broken voice coil. Does it actually look like a broken wire or whatnot? Thanks again.
  21. After 5 years of thoroughly enjoyed use/abuse, my tweeters on my klf20s are sounding scratchy. I remember a topic concerning the problem being possibly a bad diaphram vs. a bad tweeter. Can anybody offer a refresher course on this problem. Thanks in advance.
  22. 45-Kiss,I was made for lovin you. First lp, Van Halen I. Luckily, my parents had a pretty decent stereo from what I remember. Gerrard turntable, Criterion speakers, and a Sansui receiver.
  23. Currently, I have a five channel system, all klf series in the front. I need to replace the rear speakers and was wondering if you think the price difference is justified for this application. One of the reasons I ask is that I have nowhere local to demo. Thanks.
  24. I'm sorry, I thought I read cd, not dvd player.
