Lets see, how can I put this and not quote the master? OK, I am banned from the BB. It's worth it for a Zappa fan. "She was buns up kneeling and I was wheeling and dealing" I believe Dyna's sisters name was Fona. Do you remember who won the bet?

The crossovers are the same ones that I used with the K-600 & K-55s so they still cross at 600. Mr. Ellis did the original up-grades for "in box" use. Once I removed them from the CW, I re-wired and cleaned them up. Painted the boards etc. WAF. The new wire looks a little cleaner IMO, but thats all. I could not hear any difference. I will try to pull up a X-over photo. Terry
  4. Going down the list of known CW mods (without changing the bass bins) and trying to be objective about improvement.........IMO, in my room and to my ear: Bracing the back > YES! Dampening the K-600 > YES! Dampening the K-77 > NO Dampening the K-33 basket > NO Bracing the motor board > NO ??? Xover upgrade > YES!!! 12g Monster @ Xover > NO 12g Monster to speaker > Yes/ NO? .. just different Altec 511b W/ Altec 902-16A Driver....YES!!!! ..Cures the inherent CW mid-range rasp ..Sweet Spot is everywhere, cleaner, tighter slam. Again, IMHO...... Terry

Prove that 2 wires (yeah wires, in my world cables are the things we lift 300 ton loads with) that are properly designed to pass the entire audio signal sound different, prove it, don't just assert it. Fact is that nobody has ever proved such a thing in double-blind tests or using scientific method. Of course we can design wire that will sound different; 300' of 36 gauge will have frequency response problems but then that wouldn't be a proper wire. This wires thing is the biggest con-job in the history of audio. I'll ask you a simple question Dman: if such a simple thing as wire makes such a big difference how come it slipped right by Wente, Thuras, Olson, Hilliard, Lansing, Fletcher, Klipsch and all the other scientists (yes, scientists) and engineers that actually invented this stuff we listen to? Guys that had the resources of Bell Labs, RCA and MGM behind them. The guys that invented compression drivers, basshorns, 4" edgewound voicecoils, the 300B and 2A3 tubes and amps that used them, microphones and sound recording itself; how did the wire thing slip past those guys but not past some LSD addled baby-boomer "audiophile"? Eh? Tell me. And don't tell it's because we have better gear, those were the guys with better gear and they were right at their recording source, not listening several generations down as we do. You guys oughta be following the wire discussion over on the Altec board. Some engineer with profound experience is making mincemeat of the wire fetishists over there. I wish I knew a fraction of what that fella knows, it's also obvious that the wire weirdos do know ONLY a fraction of what he knows. You know one thing about "horndom" was that horns being unfashionable in high-end circles most hornys were pragmatic, mechanical "show me" kinda guys with a low threshold for bull****. Now that's changing; to some extent because some SET cultists, many of whom are SETists first and hornys second, are infecting the horn world with lots of cockamamie "high end" nonsense. I feel better now. I need to rant on this once in awhile. I can't stand all this bull****. ---------------- Tommy, I pretty much agree, but you need to get off of the "LSD addled baby-boomers". ......What were we talking about?........ Terry
  6. IMHO, Dell is the flavor of the month (3to5 years) as Gateway was a while back. Again IMHO, HP is the standard. BUT, I still like wing-tips..... Apple/ McIintosh (MAC) is a strange place that serves bad food for kids. (Not to offend Trey.) 15" is portable, great for CAD,..... 17" is a desk top. TC
  7. "...Mod: Installed a 2 x 1 x 22 ½ Hard Rock Maple brace on the interior side of the motorboard, between the Squawker and Woofer. Purpose: Reduce flexing of the motorboard and thus tighten bass".......... To reduce deflection in the motorboard, I used 2"X2" steel angles with the thought that steel would be a bit more rigid than any strip of wood. If you buy an 8' stick, one can find a perfectly straight 22 1/2" piece. No need to trust some guy on a saw or plainer. RIGIDITY (sp?) in the point! Then, screw & glue...screw & glue....... 10. Collin, ....."I'll take anyones word for granted who thinks they know more than PWK" Bubba, when you stuck those 511's atop Paul's bass horns and ordered the new tweeters, you said just that. You know my Heritage history of never having the backs off after over 30 years. At this time, my Corns are more eclectic. Not at all like the stock PWK product. Will you, me or Tommy ever design a folded bass horn or bass- reflex enclosure of such magnitude? I don't think so. Some people have a talent for original design, and others are talented in the improvement of that design. We now listen to up-graded X-overs, better horn lenses and drivers. The knowlage of TB, JE, LA, BEC, C&S, Mark M. and many others on this forum allow me to listen to a quality of sound reproduction that I can't afford. Regards, Terry

I know that I am starting to "grasp at straws" but with his permission I might ease the voltage up a bit. Again, the pilot light is on and output tubes are luke warm and input tubes stone cold. If it had been converted to 110v-125v, and I am putting 100v into it, I would think that the tubes would glow anyway. ?? But just sound weak. ?? I can't see anything that glares at me on the inside. There is a little bit of a black substance on the bottom of the inductor coil however. Thanks for the help, Terry

Marvel ---------------- Marvel, There is no question as dumb as I am about tube amps. I will re-check them tonight, but there are four matching output tubes and four matching imput tubes. Would there be an order in the placement of the same tubes? I am depressed. I have emailed the seller. Perhaps he will want to pay for me to have it looked at here before I ship it back to him. Thanks, Terry

  19. C&S, I see where you are going with this. I have posted very little, but monitored for some time. I try to keep my opinionated mouth shut and learn from others. Two years ago I thought tube amps were an underpowered joke. I have owned all Heritage (not Bell) over the years and never had the backs off of them. Now, I use Altec mids and drivers atop my CWs, have braced & dampened boxs, and dwelling into active crossovers/SS for bottom and nice little tubes/w passives for the top. Has this forum been of value to me? You bet!!! The personal contacts and info obtained allows me to listen to the best sound I could imagine. (for the buck) This forum and the people involved gave me the knowledge to listen to a sound that would cost at least five times what I have invested. To listen to sound reperduction that I can't afford. I learned that it is not about how much money you have to spend....It is about what you know. For that, I will always be greatful to Indy-Klipsch. IMO the BB is a public service to the people who made Klipsch & Asso. what they are today. Will I buy the new Klipsch? Will I buy a non-PWK design from them? Do I make money for them? Have I suggested to a friend that he pick up a pair of RF-7s? Nope. Is the Klipsch forum going down hill due to censorship? Will I pull away from it? Only when I stop learning from it and the people who post. Regards, Terry

  21. Mark, Your comments are not very encouraging. The E.A.R. guy designed many Lux amps (before Luxman became Alpine) during that time frame. I phoned the seller and he offered an immediate refund. The frustrating part is that I will have to continue the quest for a nice little tube amp to bi-amp the 511/902 tops of the CWs. The Luxman were perfect to fill the bill in the direction that I am going. They have adjustable imputs that would give me more flexibility with Rane/Butterworth combinations. Many thanks, Terry
