I for one wouldn't use a horn with a 500 Hz cut off frequency with a 400Hz crossover. You will be hearing distortion at the horns lower limits of the horn. Maybe that is why the Cobreflex sounds cleaner to me. ---------------- Good point about the cut off frequency. With the Corns, I'm at 600.

Its been years since I listened to them in Khorns, but I remember them as sounding a little "******". I did some serious A/B comparisons with the K-55 and 902's crossed at 600 just a few weeks ago. IMHO, the K-55 sounded "lifeless" compared to the 902-16a. Also, the 511b/902 runs above 22,000cps lending itself to 2-way application. (have not tryed it yet) Regards, Terry

Love the sound. Love the dispersion. However, 511b's do not fit either inside or on top of Cornwalls, which I am using for surrounds. So I tried University Cobraflex's. IMHO, the sould is as good - if not a wee bit better - than the altecs. The dispersion is easily as good. Another plus....your midrange driver will screw right on....no adapter needed. Good luck! ---------------- Well yea...... Except that the 511b can be built into a separate cabinet like Khorn "A" (?) and placed atop the CW. (and who would want to use a K-55 when the Altec 902 driver is out there.) The Crobraflex sounds great in a high school gym. Opps...Sorry Ed...I have done it again..... Regards, Terry
  4. PS: Hope I'm not starting to sound like "Big Busa". Have no doubt, I will check the fire insurance policy before starting the project. I can't believe that six mo. ago I had never had the backs off of '75 CWs bought new. Thanks to the BB and J.E. I might need to post in Odds&Mods from now on. Terry
  5. Colin, " seems to me that bi-amping must be the logical conclusion"....as Billy Bob Thornton said "I like the way you talk".... I don't think that PWK liked the idea of bi-amping very much, but I dont believe that he was speaking of a SS/Tube combo. The Lux KMQ60 tube power amps(50wpc) came in this week and are now on the bench. After the power thing is worked out, U.S.A 110v down to 100v Jap. (Variac vs. cool Resister ?) and everything else is checked out, I will power the Altec 511b/902-16a and K-77 top end with the tubes. The Cornwall bass bins will receive power from two SS Luxman M-117s BTL(440wpc). The whole thing seems logical........but......... Much to do and I will ask for help with wiring and butterworth X-over mods. It was very nice to meet you and the other students of "Helen Kellar's school for the hearing impaired" last weekend. Regards, Terry

QUAD knew about the problem, and quit using the enamel type resistors a few years after production started. The reason the QUADs are still in my system is because they SOUND GREAT. I have had quite a few amps and preamps, and the QUAD trio is the only thing I've had that can both open up almost immediately AND deliver unrestricted dynamics at high SPLs. The sound is delicate and airy, and stays that way even after they go into growl mode. In short, I feel like Goldilocks, and think they sound "juussst right". The thing is, the sonic signature of the three pieces is particular to the three pieces, and it's not likely to be captured by some other push-pull circuit or high powered SET amp. The QUADs are what they are, and no matter what they are put up against -- they will not "be bettered", because in the end, the only thing that will be said is that they sound very good indeed -- and some other offering would only be chosen because of personal preference or bias. ---------------- Dean, So may I assume that you like the QUADs?
  7. Greg, Welcome to Phi Slamma Jamma. I will teach you the "hand-shake" and Mr. Ellis will introduce the Altec 511b/902-16a top ends when the after-glow is gone. When you get the second pair, stack them tweeter to tweeter. (just for fun) Injoy the Cornwall "BOOT IN THE CHEST" for a bit. No need to look up Slam Factor in your audio dictionary because "you be slammin". Congrats, Terry
  8. I think you and Bob got all the shots posted. Thanks guys. tc

  13. Cant get 511/902 photos to attach. Ahhhaghhhhh.......!!!! tc

As an injured Journeyman carpenter with a BA in art, AutoCAD is starting to seem doable. We'll test the "Old Dog vs. New Tricks" theory. If anyone on the forum has any insights, please come forth... ---------------- Fini, AutoCAD and AutoCAD-LT are HUGE programs. There are many good CAD programs out there, but professionally speaking (not that I am one) the two above are more accepted. AutoCAD is like the internet....Don't expect to ever see it all. If you are young (very young) a "self-taught" posture could be in order. If you are good, you might know 10% in ten years, old dog. There are many classes available and if you time it right, you could get a "one on one" with an instructor. Three or four eight hour days in that kind of environment can work wonders for old dogs. If one wants to go to work, "self-taught" can be very frustrating, time consuming, and lead to "I give up". 3D DesignCAD is a good one. Also APEX-CAD is an easy start. Just keep in mind, classes or no, most CAD softwares tend to be a constant, long term learning experience. But man its fun. Terry

  16. Steve is bringing a pair of Cornwall 1's from LSU country and has agreed to the on-site mods. I will bring the Altec 511b-902-16a/ K-77/ Xover combo and with a little help, the transformation will happen in about 15 min. each way. Regards, Terry
