  1. The schematic shows 245uH. A plot revealed that it moves the crossover point down, which would potentially put the diaphragm in distress and induce distortion. It also moves the target frequency for the EQ that brings the peak down in the K-77. It doesn’t matter if Klipsch missed these, or if it sounds better to one set of ears. It’s wrong, and should be fixed.
  2. I didn’t see a reference to an autoformer or “transformer” issue - I stock these parts.
  3. You’re right, it’s irreconcilable. I get this binary way of looking at it, and it’s almost where I’m at. But like Marvel said, it’s a big part of our lives. I think it is better to adapt.
  4. Are you sleep walking through this place?
  5. @DizRotus Did someone from Klipsch chastise you or delete a post related to using different caps or bracing the sidewalls of your La Scalas?
  6. Yeah, “modified”. Details can be taken to PM, another message board, or one of several Facebook groups. John Warren has also opened up his site for this type of discussion.
  7. There is nothing going on here that prevents this kind of discussion. In fact, it’s encouraged.
  8. This is not complicated. You own “modified Cornwalls”, and there are many places where the mods can be discussed. One in particular is getting some traction, but at the rate you guys are going, that place may not last long. It’s only a running joke with those who don’t understand why this company has decided to take its IP seriously.
  9. Bumped. Someone is telling people that 1) Klipsch dropped these because of cost, and 2) was the only PWK approved form of tweeter protection. Neither is true. They introduce distortion, and according to Roy, can also short out an amplifier.
  10. Jim from JEM is also very knowledgeable and helpful. We speak regularly and he’s done a great job updating his page with some of the more relevant things we’ve talked about. The AL looks intimidating but it’s really not that bad. Two 4’s will be paralleled for the 8uF, and I found 15uF polyester at Solen that can be paralleled for the 30uF. I actually don’t see the issue with an electrolytic here, since Klipsch used them in the AL-3. I would personally use the AL-3 in place of the AL, since the AL, like the AK-2 - was part of the EV mixup and is improperly balanced. EDIT: I forgot to add that since JEM is an authorized Klipsch dealer, they also sell replacement diaphragms for the K-77.
  11. @JRHI’m getting conflicting information on driver compatibility with this network. Can the B2 be used with the single port phase plug PD5? I’m being told that since the network came out the same year as the two port phase plug K-55-V, that it wasn’t meant to be used with the older driver. However, I really don’t see anything in the design that would point to it being exclusive to the newer variant. Thanks, Dean

  13. It’s not bare wire. It’s magnet wire/enamel coated. It’s pretty robust. Not easy to scrape off by any stretch.
  14. I posted this on the Klipsch Vintage Fans Page on Facebook in Lee’s thread. “I’ve been measuring all of these old capacitors since I’ve started doing this for Klipsch, and it pains me to say it - but Trey has mostly been right about this. 1 in 6 cans are sweating/seeping (you can smell the oil), but measure okay. The measured ESR and DF I’m getting is within acceptable range on these. As for some of the other stuff I’ve done, I’m not finding anything weird. Even the electrolytics are measuring okay. So, this whole “all the old caps are bad” thing is largely a myth. Polyesters measure higher in ESR than polypropylenes. A certain someone should have been measuring new polyesters for the baseline, not picking outliers from what they were pulling off of old networks.”
  15. Yeah, I think I prefer that method over the way I did it. That lead is probably easier to get into hole than the wire. The zip tie is a good idea too. Very nice. Polyester/Mylars are basically the same. They may be pedestrian, but they’re the right part. Something we never covered or discussed, was the possibility that since their ESR is so high, they probably add EQ to the filter (since ESR changes with frequency). Interesting to me that no one so far claims to hear a difference between these things and the cans.
  16. I traded two emails with Erse last night and then nothing from them today. The eBay seller 001 mentioned has them, but in very small quantities. If there was a significant amount of demand/work, it might be worth meeting those high MOQ’s. I’m glad you took your time. A lot of people make a mess out of these projects. Nice job!
  17. You realize he‘s using PCB’s, and if he tries to wire 10 AWG into them, he will lift the foil and ruin his board.
  18. Check connection points. Seems really hard to believe there would be a part failure.
  19. It was a joke. I was talking about the dust cap.
  20. I read that three times and I’m still not quite sure of what you’re doing. People are also using it in the KLF 20 and 30 which I don’t really understand either.
  21. I don’t think you should be trivializing this. 🙂
  22. I couldn’t find radial bipolars in all of the needed values when I started doing this almost 20 years ago - unless I was willing to meet the insane MOQ’s for electrolytics and special order them. Using a polyester in place of the electrolytic for the midrange was Roy’s suggestion. I can only hope he knows what he’s doing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  23. Definitely don’t go with the guy using words you don’t understand. I’m really spun up this week. A solid three days on the Klipsch pages on Facebook has me pretty much fried.
  24. Pretty cool. Glad they're not mine, lol.
