Minimus 7's huh. So what's the deal here? Since the device is primarily dealing with out of phase retrieval, you don't have to worry about the bass much? I wasn't even aware that this thing could be used with more that one amp. I talked to them on the phone about a year ago, and got the impression it was designed only to be used with one amp. I also thought that one of those knobs acted like a balance/attenuator, so you could shift output between front and rear -- sort of like you can on a car stereo. Isn't timbre matching a consideration here? So, maybe I'll find myself a nasty, beat up set of Heresys -- yank the tweeter and the squawker -- remove the bass elements from the crossover -- and then mount the tweeter & midrange drivers, along with the crossover -- in the ceiling behind me Definitely time for bed.
  2. Mike. You are -- therefore you post. Whell, umm, actually, you SS folks ARE "conventionalists", but "heritics" you are not -- for that blessed title is reserved for us tubies. For sure, to each his own. Nobody hear is slamming solid state, but merely stating what we feel the differences are. Also, the majority on this forum were using SS two years ago, and most who have actually tried tube gear in their system has NOT gone back. As a matter of fact -- I don't know ANYONE that has gone back to SS after experiencing even the most humble tube setup. Many who enjoy HT have found it best to create a separate system for 2-channel music.
  3. I know Nugent, and I do guitar -- but what's a Birdsong?
  4. Yes, I'm an idiot. I should have read the post more closely. Thanks for the heads up. If we had any sense we'd all be running linux. It may not be as intuitive, but it's certainly more stable.
  5. Your signature says your HT system is RB5 based. Tell me a little about that system. I'm especially interested in your opinion of those little dynamos as compared to the Chorus' you are running.
  6. Of course, the lens size. Hell I knew that. It must be time for bed!!
  7. uhh, let me get this straight. I want to make sure I didn't misunderstand. The tweeter and midrange drivers are same in the Heresy, as they are in the Scala, Belle, and K-horn? That can't be right. I clearly misunderstood. In the event this is true, then what pray-tell, accounts for the huge disparity in sensitivity between Heresy and the others? Yes, yes, I know -- showing my ignorance again.

Yeah, that was fun. Probably could have kept it up for another hour if my phone hadn't of crapped out. Yep, that's the one. For some reason I thought it was $50, but hey -- $35 is even better.

O.K...I'm off as of 10:33 talk to ya in a minute
  10. Interesting comments. Hopeful. Doesn't that squawker ring like a telephone? I haven't yet searched the archives. Since they have changed the format on the board -- I have found the search utility just about worthless. I'll go take a peek at Al's site, and the archives and see what I come up with. Justin. Changing over to 5-way binding posts should be cake, as long as you have the 1's, so you an pop the back off. Just remove what's there, and use one of the offerings from parts express. Use two singles, so you don't have to worry about the spacing, or drilling new holes. Mind as swap out that old clip wire while your in there.
  11. You'd be amazed at how much David Gilmour uses the steel guitar. Sometimes, you can't even tell that's what it is. "One of these Days", is chock full of it.
  12. I guess you haven't seen my email yet saying to go a head and give me a call at home. I signed off for about an hour, but I'm back online. I'm on dial up -- so, when you're ready to talk, post here and I'll sign off so the phone will ring.
  13. I read a lot about mods for the Cornwalls and Scalas -- but not much on the Heresy. Seems to me that of the three, the Heresy is probably in most need of improvement. Let it rip. Tweaks, crossover mods, whatever.
  14. Craig, you really need the Kester? I've probably got close to 3/4 LB of a spool left. I'm not likely to be soldering anything for a while, and when I do -- I still have close to 1/4 LB of the Cardas left. I'd be more than happy to send it your way if you need it. I just went back and read the whole thread again. I was so busy taking the lashing from Kelly in 3 different threads, I missed all the kudos:) Well, thanks everyone. Cool. I KNOW Kelly is right. But fact of the matter is -- I just can't swing anything bigger right now. The tubes for the Apollos were foremost in my thoughts, and improving the RF7 system was actually the primary motivation for selling the DQ's. No new toys unless old toys go first. That's just the way it is now. So, I needed something to replace them, and when I saw these Heresys -- I thought they would fit the bill perfectly for now. I do a lot of movies on the downstairs system, and I wanted something that wouldn't lose detail and dynamics at low listening levels. I almost bought another set of RB5's, which everyone here knows I hold in very high regard. My reasoning was that for $300 less, I could finally experience some Heritage first hand. Maybe not the best that Heritage has to offer, but sufficient for my purposes. I also remembered all of the posts when I first came to the forum singing the praises of the RB5 -- "You're out of your mind dude, even a lowly set of Heresies will crush those things." So -- now I'll find out, and I didn't have to break the bank account to do it. If I didn't have the SVS, I might not have done it, but I knew I could bring that bottom in to round things out a little. I'll dope the midrange driver, and start learning something about the crossover. I'm not an electronic guru -- but the soldering gun doesn't scare me, and with a little help I think I can get these sounding pretty sweet. There ARE advantages that a smaller box has over a bigger one. The bass usually sounds more controlled, the midrange more coherant, and the soundstage is usually more stable. I realize these are generalizations that usually apply to direct radiator designs. I don't know if the same applies to horns. However, it does seem that a larger baffle will add a sense of diffuseness to the soundstage. At any rate, it's hardly any big deal. I may like them and I may not. There is no way I can know unless I hear them. I will play and tweak and see what happens. If my ears can't deal -- I'll sell. However, there is just as much a chance that with the sub and with proper placement -- they will do much of what I want them to do. If I want finesse and magic -- I'll go upstairs:)
  15. I don't have any friends that are stupid enough to buy Bose. Guess I'm getting cards again.
  16. LOL ...and I'll raise you a pound of Kester 44
  17. Of course, if I just even remotely hint that I'm interested in something -- everyone comes flying out of the woodwork. Yesterday I posted that I was bidding on ALL the K-horns on eBay -- and today -- they are gone!! Craig, please forward the email to my aol account. I'm at home now. sevenwescotts@aol.com Kelly, who the hell is 'Andy' ?
  18. Pat, I don't know where you live, but I am especially interested in hearing about how you are going to get these transported.
  19. These are generalizations Solid State: More 'slam', the bottom sounds 'quicker', and doesn't hang around very long. Brighter, but not necessarily in the sense of more clarity or more open. It's just 'brighter', the highs are more prevalent. During low level listening, the midrange tends to shrink away from you, and the soundstage collapses. The sound is more 'homogenized'. There is projection, but instruments can't be identified in their space as readily. There is a 'filmy' quality with solid state. One doesn't really notice it all that much, until they hear a system that doesn't have it. Then, when going back -- it is very easy to hear and hard to ignore. Tubes The bass is fatter and warmer, and though not as tight as solid state, seems to envelope you and fill the room more. It's not like muddy bass from a bad speaker, but 'just there', hanging out with the rest of the music -- instead of stomping all over everything. The highs don't sound 'splashy' or 'spitty'. They are not as intense, not as brittle, but instead sound softer, and smoother. Sounds in the upper treble trail away somewhat. The midrange presence remains intact even at low levels, which I'm finding out leads to not needing to jack the volume up to get realism out of the sound. Whether at low levels, or high -- things sound pretty much the same, instead of changing up with volume. This is very hard to explain. There is more air , or ambiance. There is the impression of more information in the soundstage. The sound seems closer to you physically, instead of just hanging out in front of the baffles. In spite of being a warmer sound, there is more clarity. It's paradoxical. It's almost like the warmth allows things to separate out more from each other a little more. I was thinking about this today. It's like a balloon you paint dots on, and as you blow up the balloon, the dots start spreading apart from each other into their own space. Solid state that I've been exposed so far doesn't do this -- everything just seems like it's running together. It's mostly about the midrange where most of the music is. All of this is pushed forward, without being abrasive or overbearing. I hope this helps.
  20. HD, Did you see Bob Gassels offer to you to come back to Klipsch and build Belles and K-horns? They are totally overwhelmed over there. I think he said something about some nice laid back part time work to the tune of 60 hours a week The thread is in the General Forum Section. I'm pretty sure he was dead serious.
  21. Craig, Consider it sold. Name your price.
  22. Audio Nervosa? DQ madness? You can be such butthead sometimes So, ever heard vintage Heresys with 500 watts of SVS? Ever seen a better looking set of DQ-10's? Man, and that slam on my blue carpet. I'm pretty upset about that.
  23. Stop it Kelly, you're killing me. What a hellaciously funny post. I don't even know what to say. Man, I LIKE trying different things. The DQ's are the first thing I've taken a loss on. I've discovered first hand what works and what doesn't. That doesn't happen unless you try different things. If I'd went straight to the Apollos or some other SET option, I would have always wondered what P-P sounded like, or good solid state like the Bryston. I have opinions based on first hand experience, and not what some reviewer said. I'm not looking for the Holy Grail here -- I'm just trying to have some fun with the music! The K-horns are coming, I can see that. But this Heritage purchase only sets me back $500, and hell, I spent almost that much on two tubes today. This purchase is no big deal. If need be, I can turn them over in week, and hey -- I can actually say I HEARD a pair. I am curious about your comment regarding the midrange horn. There should be Alnico magnets in both the tweeter and the midrange. Hmmm. Guess I'll find out soon enough.
  24. LOL I hear ya Yoda. Well of course they'll end up on the chopping block. I'll take a nibble and then off they go. I've made no secret of the fact that ANYTIME I have EVER been exposed to Heritage -- it has been nothing but an ear blistering experience. To be honest, these three-ways scare the hell out of me. Besides, a big horn purchase is going to have to wait until all my money rolls in. Hell, I just remembered that besides the Aragon, I've got two matched pairs of Amperex 7308's sitting out there, and I should probably move the Thalia as well. I got a few things to straighten out before I can start thinking about K-horns (and a thing or two to learn as well).
  25. No, you've never steered me wrong, and there were certainly times I passed on your advice only to regret it later. This is probably one of those times. Right now, it's simply a matter of timing. The Aragon is still sitting out at AudiogoN, and I definitely wanted new tubes for the Apollos. I really just don't have all of my duckies in a row right now for a K-horn purchase. For now, I just wanted to get something 'Heritage' in here to play around with. I went after these particular Heresys because they were cherry, and I figured they would be fairly easy to sell off when I make a move later. I also noticed that the seller cut and paste the information from the products section of this site. These are 'old school' Heresys, and I'm thinking old HD might even have slapped these together. They certainly don't look like MDF from the front. I'm also somewhat handicapped by not knowing everything I want to know about the bigger horns and the various configurations of the drivers. It's a bit overwhelming, and I do know that not all K-horns are created equal. There will be more K-horns. For now, I'll tickle myself with these lil o'le ****kickers and see what happens. What I really want to do is expose myself to the horn midrange, and see if I take a dive under the couch. I'm not so much worried about the big picture right now. I have one of the better SVS offerings and a great crossover, and I'm sure it will be more then able to round out the bottom and bring some balance to the signature. The fun thing about this hobby is never being done, jeepers -- if I go to the K-horns now -- then what:)
