  1. Andy, It blows my mind that anyone would sell one after owning it. It sounds that good. They are discontinued, but Crutchfield still has some. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-UTj9gfU7STC/cgi-bin/prodview.asp?i=158DVP9KES Keep in mind -- two channel only, no multi-channel capability. The funny thing about the DV9000ES is that it was developed by the video guys at Sony, not the audio guys -- and sounds better than any of the decks the audio side of the house has put out. Go to the Asylum and run a search on '9000ES'. I also posted a lengthy two part review which you can find under the 'Product Reviews' link. Dave, I think it's strange that you think my comment regarding the flat sound of LP strange. Compared to CD, it is definitely 'flat' sounding. Also, most folks don't use Dynamic Range Expanders. The LACK of compression on a CD certainly doesn't make up for the music that is not, nor cannot ever, be there due to the specified limitations of the medium. I have 78's that sound better than any but the very finest CD's. A difference of opinion here. Since I listen to mostly Rock music which is for the most part electrified, I don't miss much harmonic information to begin with. For me, I'm willing to trade some upper harmonic information for the lack of compression. I still think, and will always think -- that this debate is caused more by differences in speakers, rooms, musical preferences, etc - than the actual mediums. In my case, here I am vintage in listening tastes and equipment, but see 2 channel only as being only dual mono. I prefer the sound of my DynaQuad pulling the ambience off the LPs for a third dimension. BTW, there also seems to be far less ambience on CD's. I really don't have a technical explanation for this. Don't know anything about the nature of digital that should affect out of phase information. I don't really understand this either. It's a bizarre observation on your part. How does the Dynaquad actually work? No extra amp right? Just extra terminals for the rear speakers.
  2. I do believe he is running the RCA Redbase in that AE-3. Did you know RCA made all the CBS/Hytron, GE, and Sylvania Brownbase 5692's. They are identical to the Redbase.
  3. Grab the beautiful, 30 pound, 2-channel only, Sony 9000ES while you can. I get to hear LP's about once a month. It's a nice, polite, flat, kind of sound. No thanks. Someone explain this to me: You all isten to speakers that reproduce music with almost no compression, then use a medium/source that has lots of compression. I agree with Craig, the new recordings sound great.
  4. In a way, you are correct. My venture into Klipsch started when the tight, controlled bass of the RB5 won me over. The Klipsch Reference speakers are the only ported speakers I have ever heard where I felt the bass was tight, as well as tonally correct. I now listen to the RF7's with a triode p-p amp. Yes, almost 30 years of audio for me. Advents, Stacked Advents, Powered Advents, AR11's & G.A.S., Magnepans & Luxman, and now the horns. I wanted the DQ's when they came out -- but couldn't afford them. I recently picked up a set on Audiogon for the reasons of restoration and nostalgia. I don't like fat, bloated bass -- which is how the bass in most ported speakers sounded in the 70's and early 80's. Incidently, I can't imagine dumping 120 watts into an Advent. They were only rated to take 60, and much over 80 and the tweeter would fry. This message has been edited by deang on 09-21-2002 at 12:31 PM
  5. I've been following this thread over the last couple of days, trying to decide if I have anything constructive to add. Thank you Pland, for so perfectly putting down my feelings regarding "the friction". I'm sure Kelly is more than able to defend himself, but I think I will make some comments. Craig - I don't even really understand why you get so hot. Mobile ***** slaps everyone once in while, it's just the way he is. Personally, I think it's hilarious, and he's done it to me on several occasions (remember the thread on firearms and concealed carry). Earlier in this thread Mobile made an analogy using two different types of ships -- and you kind of went off the deep end so to speak. Somehow, you took it as an insult. I certainly don't agree with everything Kelly says, but it's always interesting to read his insights and perspectives. I think this also applies to most who post here in 2-channel. Hey, just eat the meat and spit out the bones. If Kelly is attempting to get under your skin, then it would certainly appear he has suceeded. The irony here is that you won't give an inch any more than he will. I've said this several times in the past, but it's a fact that Kelly is soley responsible for transforming the 2-channel forum, as well as increasing the listening pleasure of 75% of us by a magnitude of 10. We shouldn't view disagreements, friction, and tension so negatively. Think of the jagged small stones in a river that rub against each other as the current moves them along the bottom. After a while, all that rubbing and bumping makes stones with a surface as smooth as glass. Let it go. Be a thermostat, not a thermometer. Kelly -- quit picking on Craig
  6. How far back do you want to go? In the 70's, while I was listening to the Original Advents and AR11's, all my friends listened to Cerwin Vegas. Awful, just plain awful. Yeah, the problem was the midrange -- there wasn't any. Radio Shack used to make a speaker called the Mach 1. It walked over every derivitave of Cerwin Vega that existed back then. Ah yes, the Mach 1 -- the ultimate teen party speaker
  7. I didn't post the link to spark debate. I just thought it contained nice, fairly concise explanations regarding the circuits. I agree with Kelly's opinion regarding the statement. If one compares the sound of equipment designed by the "egomaniacs" who actually LISTEN to their designs, to engineers who paint by the numbers -- well...
  8. I still think the Cerwin Vegas are best left in the closet. Great speakers if you like tinkle-boom. I don't really know anything about the Scott's. Are they EL-84 based like the Eico?
  9. The consensus of all Klipsch Forum Members is that Cerwin Vegas make nice closet dust collectors.
  10. -- from the guitar amp perspective. http://www.groovetubes.com/tubes.cfm
  11. I'm surprised there isn't more interest in the Consonance kits. The SET amp looks relatively easy to build.
  12. Hey, who's cackling? Since tbabb posted the pic, I thought that was his rig. Also, the person sitting in the chair looks as if they have been exposed to the orb of distortion
  13. The amp on the third shelf looks like an AE-25, is it? I can't quite make out what you have on the bottom shelf (or on the floor). Whatcha gonna do with that push-pull amp?
  14. egads. I'm at work. Can you shoot it again this way. dean.wescott@wpafb.af.mil thanks!
  15. Great leap of faith Jim. I'll think you'll be quite surprised at the equally large leap in sound quality.
  16. Kelly, I know this has come up before, but I can't find the post where you said it. Which is your preferred 6SN7?
  17. I would love to comment, but since I don't know what Kain said - I won't. Where's the link to the thread with the offensive remark? Kain, you out there? What the hell did you do now
  18. Yes, Peter Gabriel's "So" -- is an excellent recording.
  19. Hey Dano, I just saw your Cornwall add on AudiogoN. I thought you were keeping them? Probably ought to yank that ad. If you aren't selling them, hang on to them for a month or two, and I might be able to buy them from you.
  20. Did you guys scroll down and look at ALL the pics? I especially dig the whole getup in the cage supporting the tweeter (did you notice the tube). Evidently, this whole thing slides into the back of the speaker cabinet, and then the tweeter fits through the hole in the front of the baffle. C'mon -- it's WAY cool.
