  1. How are the speakers aimed at you? In a small room you can have them aimed almost straight forward and then sit at the back of the room. Did you try the risers or did this caulk mod first? Try the riser and facing the speakers straight forward. My risers bring my LS up to 41 and 1/4 inches and it helped alot. Now I want to take 2 foot by 2 foot plywood (1/2 or 3/4 inch) and glue them together to make 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 inch risers I can slide under the LS. This way I can raise the LS up to the height of the KHorns if need be. I think 46-48 inches in my room would be about right. In your room raise the speaker to at least 42-44 inches with the risers. People on the forum hear about how great La Scalas, Khorns, Cornwalls sound but do not realize how many different things affect the sound. Room size, what you have in the room(carpet, hardwood floors, drapes, ruggs, etc), components(if you upgrade to these speakers there is a good chance you will need to upgrade one or more of your components), quality of the recording and others. Tofu your going thru what I went thru the first 6 months I had my speakers along with many other forum members have also so hang in there. How much space between the speakers is there? Xman
  2. can't say on the amp but my NAD C542 CD player sounds great!! Talk to the NAD dealer and ask him if you can demo it in your system. Leave a deposit, pick it on Sat right before they close( or whatever day) and bring it back the next day they open. I picked up the C540 and had it for 2 days before I bought one. Also had another dealer let me bring the Jolida CD player home and compared it to the C542. Talk to the dealer. Xman
  3. About a 2 years ago my RSW 12 would fire off a single drum beat aobut every minute when watching movies or listening to music. Turns out it was my A/VR, had it fixed works fine. Check your other components also. Xman
  4. Depends on the A/VR. IF it has a main in and a pre out then you should be able to use the amp from the A/VR with a preamp. I would suggest later getting a separate power amp or amps. Xman
  5. If you play alot of records then the Juicy Music Blueberry or Blueberry extreme have gotten excellent reviews on the 2 channel forum. I'm trying to save up for the Peach preamp. These are tube preamps. If you want a SS preamp someone else should be able to give some ideas. Do a search in the 2 channel forum on the blueberry. Xman
  6. I have 3 La Scalas up front in a room 15 X 15 X 8 and I have the same problem. It sounds great up to a certain volume with movies or music but once you turn up the volume a little more they overpower you. I guess we need bigger rooms!! xman
  7. I had KLF 20s before the La Scalas. After I got the LS they did not sound as good as the KLF 20s did until I made the risers and upgraded preamp and amp. I remember the bass bin mod you are talking about and it is way beyond my abilities to make. Right now the mid horn is almost centered on my earlevel when sitting on my couch and the tweeter horn just above earlevel.
  8. trying to add the pic without having to download the pic but not working.
  9. This is the riser I made for my La Scalas. It is 6 1/4 inches high making the LS 41 1/4 inches high. Really helped with the sound. Now I want to try a new riser that will put the midrange and tweeter horns at the same hight as the KHorns midrange and tweeter horns are. So if someone who has KHorns could do me a favor and measure from the floor to the center of the midrange horn and also to the center of the tweeter horn. I want to make some risers that will bring my LS horns up to the same hight as the KHorns. I'm not sure if this will help any since my room is 15 X 15 X 8. I sit ten feet back but could go back to 12 feet. I think with a bigger room it would work better but not sure. Does anyone think this would be worth my time and money? I would appreciate if someone could give some ideas on what materials to use and the best way to put them together. I Have very basic tools and not much experience working with wood or almost none. Well any help on this possible project would be greatly appreciated!! Xman
  10. Tofu wrote "i just rewired the university woofer in my scalas. they previous owner had it wrong. the bass is a lot less boomy and more articulate now (lol placebo). although it (the bass) isnt as loud as it was previously. i think i now hear how people can be complaining about la scalas lacking bass. i have a sub for that though." That is what I like about the La Scalas bass it is not boomy but "articulate and fast. When I have tried to use a sub with my La Scalas it just doesn't sound right to me too boomy. If I can hear any of the boomy bass, even a little it does not sound good to me. I do not know much about subs so if I'm not setting it up right then that could be the problem also. I work nights so I don't turn the bass up on my LS and don't use the sub at night. By night I mean I get off work at 3:00 AM and start listening around 4:00 AM. So I have reconditioned my ears and mind to not need a lot of bass. I heard a pair of KHorns with a RSW 15 that sounded very good. Xman
  11. I agree with him on the NAD C541i or better get the C542 I did and it is great. I have a NAD C540 that I used with my first pair of Klipsch speakers, Heresys and a Luxman reciever. The combo is very good. If anyone want a NAD C540 cheap? Xman
  12. I just sent you a email about a Monarchy Audio SM 70 Pro. Xman/James
  13. Tofu I made the risers by cutting two by fours into 2 foot sections took 4 of those and made a square covered it with 3/4 inch plywood also 2 feet by 2 feet and braced the inside with somemore two by fours. The side with the plywood is up. I bought more plywood so I can adjust the height of the speakers up and down. I'm thinking about making risers that would be 13-15 inches and raise the LS to almost the KHorn height. There was a post about a bass bin for the LS that added lower bass and raised them in height. I'll see if I can find the post. Xman
  14. Tofu I'm 6'1 but when I sit on my couch my ear level is around 42-44 inches. The top of the La Scalas are around 35 inches so the tweeter was at my upper chest lower neck and the midrange horn was level with my lower chest. To my ears this caused the speakers to be very harsh cause the midrange horn was firing so far below my ears. The tweeters an inch and half below the top and the center of the midrange horn is about 6-8 below the top(guessing). So my risers are almost 7 inches high that puts the tweeter just a little above my ears and the center of the midrange horn level with my mouth. This really helped with the harshness, and they had better detail and bass. The KHorn is around 52 inches so I could raise the horns on the La Scalas up another 8 inches and have them close to the hieght of the KHorns. I am going to experiement and raise my La Scalas up to about 48-50 inches. Also remember if your room is big enough that you can put your couch back far enough you will be on a better level with the La Scalas horns and may not have to use risers but even then they might sound better with the LS on risers that raise their horns to the same height as the KHorns. I sit about 9 feet from the LS so raising them really improved the sound. Once I raise the speakers another 6-8 inches I'll post what I think. I do want to know what's up with the rumors about the Heritage line. Have to wait. Xman
  15. I went from KLF 20s to 2004 La Scalas and they sound great! I have never heard RF 7s so I cannot compare them to new La Scalas. I think Cal is right the La Scalas will probably not be a huge improvement but maybe a small improvement, no improvement, or won't sound as good as the RF 7s. Then again to you they may sound much better than the RF 7s it's all up to the person, you could like the new La Scalas and your best friend likes the RF 7s. My living room is 15 X 15 X 8 and they have no problem with bass for music. I don't listen to much classical so I don't need deep rumbling bass. If you plan to use them in home theater then you will need a sub or maybe not. For music they will do fine they have a tight, fast bass that you really feel. People will tell you the KHOrn or Cornwall have lower bass and they are right they do but I just like the bass the La Scala has, it's all personal choice. You may also have to try different equipment with the La Scalas or what you have may work perfect with them. I would love to find someone in the Austin area with RF 7s and do a comparision between the speakers with my gear and their gear. Also would like to get my La Scalas in a bigger living room. If you have the money and are willing to try them go for it. Two things that made My La Scalas started to sound better: one after they broke in and two I also would suggest making risers(7-10 inches high) that makes a big impact on their sound. When you are used to having the horns at ear level then having the midrange and tweeter horns below ear level can sound very bright. The risers brings the horns back up to the level you would be used to. Good luck with your choice both speakers are excellent choices. Xman
  16. Try what you can afford first and then try other things later. Change the crossover, get a cd or dvd player and stop using your comp's player, Mark from Juicy Music has a new $600 tube preamp called the Merlin that looks really interesting, and you already have a Mac for a power amp. I bought a pair of 2004 La Scalas and I did not think they sounded much better than my KLF 20s. I bought a tube amp and then a SS preamp and a new CD player and the sound really went to the next level. Another problem is my room is 15 X 15 and these speakers sound great to a certain sound level(a little louder than people talking) and then they overpower my room. KHorns, La Scalas, Belles, and probably RF-7s all need very good equipment to run them to get the best sound from the speakers. Once you get the crossovers replaced if that does not help then figure out what you could afford for a tube preamp and a good cd or dvd player and post a new topic asking for suggestions on what gear to buy. If the crossovers don't work and you cannot afford better gear, used or new then I would sell the La Scalas. There are so many things you have to do to get the best sound out of these speakers that if you cannot do it then they will not sound very good. The description of the sound by these speakers by other forum members is usually due to quality equipment. If I would have known how much money it has taken to upgrade my system to get the sound I wanted from my La Scalas I'm not sure I would have bought the La Scalas. They sound great but I was not expecting to have to upgrade my whole system. Good luck with it!! Xman
  17. I have a Luxman C300(1981-83) SS preamp if your interested. I would be willing to send it to you and let you take a listen and if you don't like it send it back. If you like it send me a money order for $275. Xman
  18. For Kids and adultids I would say The Incredibles is a very good choice. The picture is great and the soundtrack is very good also. Xman
  19. I have 3 La Scalas on a 15 X 15 foot wall and it is a little too small but 8 feet is too small. If you have the money and your parents don't mind storing one in the garage until you move out then buy them. Xman
  20. I'm not sure if KLipsch is making any risers for the La Scalas now. If any administrator is reading does Klipsch make risers for La Scalas? If not this is pretty easy to do. I'll post some more pics in a couple of hours. Xman
  21. If you sit around 10 feet from the speakers try the riser. If you sit farther back it may not do any good. I'm have more plywood that would raise the speakers up to 3 inches higher so I may play with it and see what the difference in sound. Xman
  22. Here is a simple riser for La Scalas that made a big difference in the sound. The riser is just a 2 foot by 2 foot section made of 2 x 4s and whatever thickness of plywood and then slide it under the speaker. If you want the speaker higher add more sections of 2'x 2' plywood. That way you can adjust the hight to the best sound. Before the riser the tweeter was at my chin level and the mid horn was at my upper chest while sitting on my couch. Now with the riser the tweeter is just above my eye level and the mid horn is centered on my ear level. This really helped with some of the harshness people say La Scalas have since without the riser the tweeter is closest to your ears and the bass bin is at your leg level the sound field is lower. If you have a room that lets you put your chair back 15-20 feet you would probably not need this mod. But I'm 10 feet away so it helps alot!! I have 2 70 pound sand bags under the rug(need to find a better rug). Not sure of the height of the Cornwalls but this might work also if you sit close to them. Xman
  23. PSG here is more info on the riser for the La Scala of course now that the La Scalas are not the main speakers it may not be worth trying but if anyone else with La SCalas try it. The riser is just a 2 foot by 2 foot section made of 2 x 4s and whatever thickness of plywood and then slide it under the speaker. If you want the speaker higher add more sections of 2 'x 2' plywood. That way you can adjust the hight to the best sound. Before the riser the tweeter was at my chin level and the mid horn was at my upper chest while sitting on my couch. Now with the riser the tweeter is just above my eye level and the mid horn is centered on my ear level. I have 2 70 pound sand bags under the rug(need to find a better rug). Not sure of the height of the Cornwalls but this might work also if you sit close to them. Congrats on the KHOrns!! I'm sure when I get into a bigger house the upgrade bug will strike and I'll find me a pair of KHorns. Enjoy!! Xman
