  1. Man, I had forgotten about Asia - that really was a great album and brings back some good high-school memories. I remember making a friend listen to it at my house. I was a big Yes fan - he expected the 33 minute song. I remember how blown away he was.
  2. For any size room separates are generally "better". You just can't fit everything in one box and get the same quality. Separates also give you some flexibility to upgrade later (keep the amp and upgrade the processor...). That being said, the difference depends on a lot of other factors - like what speakers you have. You can get some very nice AV receivers - not meaning to put those down. But in a head to head comparison, separate normally win out.
  3. You know, 10 would be easy - 1 is very tough. I'm going with one that came out late 80's (it may have been 1990 - but I'm giving myself the benefit of the doubt): Toy Matinee They only had one album - if you've never heard of them, try to find it. It sounds great even today.
  4. Thanks - I just checked there and is says "No records found!" I don't think I clicked the e-mail option. I think there must have just been a glitch.
  5. Talk about a memory spike - I had both of those and the Colico one as well. As soon as I saw the photo I could vividly remember the sounds - scoring, turn-over on downs (when my buddy was playing of course)... Vibrating football - went through a few of those as well. You guys are getting me teary-eyed with memories!
  6. They came from "Klipsch Forum", not individuals. In reviewing the forum, they were all posted to the chain started by mOOn about the 20 year high-school reunion. I posted there then the next several posts on that chain ended up sent to my e-mail. I'm assuming the forum itself had a glitch. Nothing negative in the content - just don't want hundreds of e-mails sent to me each day. My wife may figure out what I really do at work all day.

    Wahoo!

First - Congratulations! "Am I going to lose a lot of quality if I run the video through the receiver intead of directly to the TV?" Probably very little, but why have any at all? I take my video directly from the DVD player (and VCR) to the TV. The less electronics you have to go through the better, IMHO.
  8. I woke up this morning to 6 e-mails from the forum. Any idea why this would happen? I love checking the forum, but don't want my e-mail flooded with the content. First time this has happened. Thanks
  9. My 20th was 2 years ago, but I'm in the Middle East and that's way too much effort for people I barely remember. "I went to my 10th, but that was TWENTY YEARS AGO. The girl I dumped in the 11th grade was married to the drummer from KISS and had been a Playmate of the Year by that time. You never would have guessed it when she was 16." That's pretty good, but I think I can top it. At my 10 year reunion, a girl showed up that no one remembered. HE had been a bit strange in High School!
  10. Seeing the score of the Rams game made me glad I missed it. Go Steelers!
  11. How often will you be watching movies? We watch movies quite a bit and the 5.1 makes a very big difference. Watching an action movie with good surround is a different experience. The center and sub make a big impact as well.

    DVD issue

Before you change out your DVD player, it could be the disc. I have a very nice DVD player (Denon 2900) and have had the problem on a few discs. Just last week I was watching season 2 of The Dead Zone. About 4 episodes per disc and 2 episodes in a row on disc 3 were corrupt. The picture froze, then did the "digital break-up thing". The audio continued, though very muffled. All other episodes were fine. Try the quick (and cheap) fix first - exchange the DVD, not the DVD player.
  13. Congrats on the new system - sounds very nice.
  14. You guys are hitting me hard. I live in the Middle East and I don't receive ANY NFL games (not even the Superbowl - can you believe that!!). I get plenty of cricket if anyone needs an update on that (somebody help me ) The only games I've seen the last 3 years have been during vacations back to the states. Even if it was one here, we're 12 hours ahead of Pacific time so it would be tough to watch. GO RAMS - AND STEELERS (and how can you not pull for Payton).

    dts

I wouldn't think the cable would make any difference. If both your DVD player and processor can handle DTS (I assume you have had success with other DVDs with DTS?) then it could be the disk itself. Have you played other DTS movies without problems?
  16. Someone help this man! Anyone who starts their question with a quote from the Holy Grail deserves immediate attention! Sorry I can't help on any of these
  17. I think you will be very happy with Rotel equipment. They are quiet, which is really nice with sensitive (Klipsch) speakers. One thing to consider - will you ever need more power? Nothing lacking with 120 x 5, but you may also want to look into the RMB-1095 (200 x 5). Just a thought.
  18. While a dedicated player does have advantages, I would consider a player than handles all formats. I have the Denon-2900 that plays SACD, DVD-A, MP3 (I think, haven't tried that), CD and DVD-V. There are many others at a variety of prices. I have a small collection of DVD-A's and SACD. All my DVD-A are 5.1. Some of my SACD are 5.1, some are 2 channel and others are hybrid (both 5.1 SACD and regular CD). Overall, I can't tell a quality difference between the DVD-A and the SACD, though I don't like the fact that I need to have the TV on to navigate the menu of the DVD-A. While the selection of music on either format is not great yet, the difference in sound quality between these and regular CD's is quite big.
  19. I like the way you think. Unfortunately, what we "need" also changes over time. In 10 years, the hot models of today will be cheap but likely replaced with "bigger and better" to temp us.
  20. On the bass issue, you may want to set the receiver to "no sub" and set towers to "large". That will tell you how much bass you are really getting out of them. Assuming that is ok, turn the sub back on and set the towers to small. Play with the cross-over until you get the sound you like. Personally, I think 60 is too low for those speakers (I'm at 80 with the RF-7's). You should try 80 - 100 - 120, assuming the receiver will allow for that. Finally (actually, make that first), set the receiver's treble and bass to the neutral positions. You may be getting adequate mid-bass, but too much treble and low bass.
  21. Thanks for sharing your HT through your web site. That is very impressive - I'm afraid I would never leave the house if I had a set up like that.
  22. I'll have to throw a differing opinion out there. I have Rotel equipment and I've been really happy. No personal experience with NAD, but I recall a few people on this forum had to trade their new units back in (I believe they were getting a "hum" through the speakers. My Rotel is absolutely silent and I think the sound is very true. As always, listening for yourself is always the best option.
  23. I've never heard the KS series, so take this with a grain of salt. I would try to match the speakers the best I can - either wait for the RS-7's, or look at the RB-75's (a lot of people like the directness of that over the surround speakers).
