  1. A call to Klipsch revealed that, since the SW-10 and its ilk were designed before Dolby Digital home theater, they are better suited to music than film explosions - the woofer will bottom out. Given that, what would be a frugal recommendation for a sub for this starter 5.1 setup?
  2. A parting gift for my son: kg 1.5's mains, kv-3 center, ss.5 surrounds (e-bay deals and my previous equipment). Which used powered sub would work well? The 1.5's are 3db down at 50 hz, so another octave would be 25hz...
  3. Fax your room layout to SVS and they'll recommend the appropriate sub. I was looking forward to playing around with one of the higher end cylinders, but the 20-39pci was the appropriate sub for my room. And it's amazing.
  4. Klipsch sells the replacement woofer K-1142-T for $40 shipped. Ordered it - worked like a charm (terminals not marked, though - assumed the fat one was +, the skinny one was - )
  5. Klipsch says the replacement woofer is the K-1142-T for $40 shipped. Was wondering if somebody had an injured KG 1.5 or KSF-S5, or the woofer, lying around. Thanks, Frank
  6. The KV-3 is a nice center. I have it between two KG 1.2's in my secondary ht.
  7. St. Louis contingent signing in....
  8. Was the Forte designed to be a mini-Cornwall?
  9. Great anecdotes! Amy, are there any behind the scenes facts to be known, like about the designers and why the Forte was developed, any last-minute changes, whether PWK was happy with them, whether they were the best seller ever for Klipsch, etc.?
  10. I first became aware of the Forte from Julian Hirsch's glowing review in the July 1986 issue of Stereo Review. I've been listening to them ever since. Considering the lead time on the review, we must be very close to the 20th anniversary of the release date. Does anybody have any good stories about the Forte, including incept date, designers, strategy, etc? How about anecdotes? Happy 20th Birthday, Klipsch Forte!
  11. ISF calibration will make the experience even more "wow." So will the correct bias lighting behind your HDTV.
  12. A very nice looking OO Academy just went for $636 on 31 January, which, with $75 shipping (whew), equals $711. That's the highest I've seen on eBay. Do prices go up around bonus/tax refund time, or is something else going on? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5858748535
  13. Since my office speakers are "near field," I went with Kef Q-15's on either side of my computer. I used to use Klipsch KG1.2's that way, but the sound broke down within a couple of feet of the drivers. The Uni-Q design cleared that up.
  14. Congrats on a great, matched compact Reference front array of speakers. Klipsch recommends the RS-25's for surrounds. For a number of reasons, (bass response, efficiency), they will match each other better for a more seamless home theater experience. If I were you, I'd get the matching surrounds now. The RS-10's would work, but I'd end up looking for RS-25's on e-bay every day until I found a good deal, and then I'd move the RS-10's to rear surround, and then I'd look for a second set of RS-25's......
  15. You may want to read this: opinions vary. http://www.hometheatermag.com/loudspeakers/25/index.html
  16. Hmmm, 4 two-channel systems including the LaScala-Carver sub combo (that's 6 other speakers, Klipsch?)... probably analog stereo audio going from the DVD player to a stereo receiver or separates.... Anybody want to introduce Mr. Bill to Dolby Digital 5.1?
  17. I looked up your dvd player and it is a progressive scan dvd player with component video output (the 3 in a row marked y, pb and pr). The closest I could find to your Akai "LCT 2060" was the Akai LC20HAB which has a component input. Double-check your Akai model number. Now, crack open both manuals. If you don't have your Toshiba DVD manual it's here: http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/dvd/product.asp?model=sd-3960 You'll need to set up your dvd player for the tv shape, progressive, and "progressive conversion" see p.61. Your tv may also need to be set up to display the component input, and a button on the remote probably needs to be pushed to see it. It'll help you a lot to learn the purposes of all the inputs and outputs of your equipment, and what they do, not just the colors. Similar surprises await you when you begin to work on the audio...
  18. 1982 in light oak? The year makes them Cornwall I's (1959-1985), and the spec says available finishes were: Walnut, Rose, Teak Oil, Oak, Cherry Lacquer, Natural, Mahogany, Maple, Raw, Black Birch. Maybe they're teak or maple... Anything I can do to help here in St. Lou? frank
  19. This may help you decide on alternatives. From the spec sheets, RS-3: 61-20KHz +/- 3dB, 95dB sensitivity, Two K-106-K 1" (2.54cm) Titanium dome compression drivers, K-1086-S 6.5" (16.51cm) Cerametallic® cone / cast polymer frame RS-3 II: 61-20kHz +/- 3dB, 95dB sensitivity, Two K-106-K 1" (2.54cm) Titanium dome compression drivers, K-1086-S 6.5" (16.51cm) Cerametallic® cone / cast polymer frame RS-35: 81-20kHz +/- 3dB, 97dB sensitivity, Two K-137 1" (2.54cm) Titanium dome compression drivers, K-1126-O 6.5" (16.51cm) Cerametallic® cone / cast polymer frame
  20. Don't forget the Record Exchange in South City on Hampton for vinyl.
  21. Vinyl, CD and DVD selection (used and new) is top tier. The staff is the most knowledgeable around. Next time you're here, also try CD Reunion in Village Square, I-270 and Lindbergh in North County. Lots of good vinyl also. Frank in St. Lou. PS - best wishes for your Mom's health.
  22. I don't have anything to add - i just wanted my Moe avatar to be close to colter's Curly avatar. Great going on the synergy/reference setup. My 18yo son (also an only) has a KG1.2 /KV-3 array powered by a Yammy pro-logic receiver (my old stuff).
