  1. Ah, grasshopper, Confucius say "switch to tea".
  2. So tell me my son, what is the name of this person? I'll send a couple of me boys, Buster and Knuckles, to pay him a visit. They'll bring a bottle of Cianti, maybe some pasta vazula, and have a friendly little chat.
  3. Pictures? I don't know Craig, it could land me in trouble with the twins, again. Henry, you are the master. We'll have to collaborate on the next opus, tentatively titled "The Hi-Fi Detective Meets the Bunco Squad from Dragnet", or as I like to call it, "Just the Facts Mams'"
  4. Wow! That's major wonderful work. Looks like I'll be heading North when I rebuild my 1962 Triumph 350 this winter. Also, I would presume that when you chrome the monos you have to strip out of all of the electronics and disassemble the transformers before you do the chroming. Must mean you're also pretty handy with a soldering gun. Great stuff. A treat to the eye. Thanks for sharing.
  5. That's really exciting. I love that movie and it had awesome special effects for the day. Something to look forward to.
  6. Well Frank, yeah I'm in trouble with the twins again, but more on that later. Got a music suggestion for us?
  7. Congrats Rick. so when's the party adn will there be girls there? Dale, that's awesome detailing. Is that a sideline or a hobby?
  8. Dean Martin! Jeez, I'm 385 years old in dog years and I'm not even close to being where you are yet. What's next, Lawrence Welk and Sing along with Mitch! By god man pull yourself together (slapping sound)! I recommend 3 hours of speed metal and call me in the morning. We'll try a rock and roll intervention, and if that doesn't work I'm going to have to take you wife out of there to a safe place (heh, heh).
  9. Well Edwin, perhaps if the night is dark and and there's a lonely rain drenched soul silhouetted under the the gleam of a solitary streetlamp, then the HI-Fi Detective will have more to say. Until then you'll have to put up with me. Gotta tell you guys, In many ways I'm a working class stiff, and for most of my life I've had to do with a working class stereo system. Sure a lot of the swells here would sniff at what I've put together and carry on about their Mac's this and their pre-amps that, but when is the last time these jaded souls have experienced a quantum leap in their listening. There're talking nuances while I'm talking major Richter scale thunderbolts of musicality. Wouldn't suprise me if most of their purchases are simply an attempt to recapture the type of experience I had today. Oh, well I'm at it fellow gear druggies, I got my fix with a 2 Channel setup for about 13 Benjamins! Craig, the twins saw yor picture and they are bemused or amused, not sure which yet, but I'll let you know.
  10. Hooting, thanks for picking up the slack. Got tied up last night and didn't get the post up. I hope you'll fill in for me next week, also because I'll be way on vaction. My recommendation for this week is an oldie, but a real goodie: Marvin Gaye "What's Going On", soul, cd One of the sweetest male voices you'll ever hear at the peak of his craft. Very well recorded too.
  11. It was a gray rainy morning and outside it was colder then a ditch diggers grave. My head was pounding from too much cheap rye and my mouth tasted like the bottom of an ashtray. It gets like that a lot when youre a Hi-Fi Private Eye. I had just finished tracking down a couple of interconnects for a cheapskate client with a fee that would barely cover the phone bill. Dont know how I had got here but I was living in a one room cold water flat, I was getting old and weary and my favorite jazz platter had a scratch in it. Trying to shake off the same old round of dreary thoughts I was reaching into the desk drawer to pour out an eye opener when in she walked. A tall, trim platinum haired blond with ruby red lips and curves in all the right places. Quite a package until I looked into her eyes. Cold, hard, world weary and wise beyond her years. Sadly, I knew the type. I could tell her beauty had started her out at the top, hanging around with hi-flyers with money to burn. Guys who only used their initials like B&K, PWK and JBL. Somewhere along they way theyd used her up and shed probably ended up with lower rent bums with names like Bose and Technics. Shed seen a lot, lost a lot and now she was nothing but trouble in 4-inch heels. Yeah she was my kinda broad all right. Clutched in her hands sticking out in front of her bullet bra was a rough looking Scott 299, circa 1959. It was from back in the days, when musicians got $50 a gig and spent their days practicing their licks on hot nights in front of open windows in cheap flophouses. Brought back memories of lost friends and lost beginnings. We didnt say much that first time. Whats your story I need a name Why For the amp To do what He said hed make it sing again Sing Sing, like the birds, the stars the wind Got a first name, hangout, initials anything Said his name was CO, think it was his initials. How much money ya got None, just me Not interested Think about it She dropped the Scott on the desk and left. What the hell, I thought. As long as booze is cheaper then food Ill get by somehow. So I took the case. Worked the usual haunts, stoolies and scum that inhabit the seamy underside of the gear world. A couple of connectors here, a bottle of Thunderbird there, sometimes just traded info on where of rare bits of gear might be located. In other words, the usual give and take with a few threats and an occasional punch thrown in. Two days later I had a name and I was in his shop. Dropped the Scott on the counter and the nervous look in his eyes told me he knew who it belonged to. Hes got a wife, I thought, this will be easy. Craig Ostby was his name, a big gregarious man with wild eyes and beard. Id also run across his type before. A mad genius whose touch could transform tired old gear into sleek rhapsodies of nirvana. All you had to see was the way those hands picked up a tube to know that this is the type of guy who clientele found him, not the other way around. I wasnt there long. Thebes, Hi-Fi Private Eye So She said youd make it sing. Sing Sing, like the sound of a lonely trumpet in the middle of the night. Yeah I can make it sing Do it You wont tell No Ok When she came in the office to pick up amp I noticed the ice had thawed just a bit. Well, well, I thought. Maybe well head back to my place for a little Cutty Sark and some Pete Kellys Blues on the TT. Just then the phone rang. It was the cheapskate interconnect guy with another job. I. OK, now for the particulars. This is a 1959-60 Scott 299 with pretty much a full Craig rebuild, including the bias mod. Aside from addressing basic safety issues, caps were replaced and a new set of Sovtek mil-spec output tubes were installed. My primary benchmark for comparison purposes is my Denon 2803 which is a good mid-fi modern receiver that matches well with my Klipsch KG 5.2s. My initial impressions were obtained by listening to a variety of music, covering blues, jazz, female singers, soul and rock from both studio and live performances.. Various songs were used for things like detailed sound and realism (horns, guitars, hand-clapping-a good indication of realism). I also used several recordings which provide a very good feel for instrumentation placement and depth of soundstage. Controls were set flat with volume set at number 2. Prior to the rebuild I would have rated the Scott as equivalent to, or slightly better then the Denon, with the edge going to the Scott for warmth, musicality and realism and the Denon garnering praise for detail and depth of soundstage. I must say the difference to my system is little short of astounding. Realism, soundstage and overall dynamics are incredible. The highs are more rolled off, but still a smidge harsh on some recordings, something easily addressed by tweaking he controls. The two most impressive improvements, however, are in clarity and bottom end. The bass coming out of this has to be heard to be believed. My Kg 52s have large passive radiators and with this amp I can tell there going to have to come out a bit farther from the wall. Oh, and the Denon is left in the dust. Major Kudos to Craig.
  12. Yeah I hear you. I still listen to just about everything, but the softer, quieter stuff gets more and more play. I think, for me anyway, it's more mood dependent then age, but I just turned 55 so it could be I simply foreget that I like rock and roll.
  13. A very informative post. Thanks for sharing.
  14. I would like to think I'm having fun on all our accounts!
  15. The Temptations are for later. Man, you guys got to start helping me out here. Tickles is going to be wearing her Catholic Schools Girls outift with her hair in twin ponytails. I'll tell you about what Tawny's up to later. Need some energy music dudes, Somthin to put some moves to. Somebody here must know more then how to dance the waltz with thier mother at a wedding reception. Let's go.
  16. Gary, you're such a showoff. Lacquered Zebrawood. That's just overkill. Ok, Ok , you're right I'm jealous. Life ain't fair (crying voice)
  17. I need your help. So, I pick up the twins from the airport when they return from the manicurists convention. Take em to my place and give them a present-new bikinis Id ordered from Rio de Janeiro. They put them on and I take them out to the backyard where Id set up a brand new trampoline. Tickles gets this wonderfully exuberant smile on her face and starts heading over to the trampoline when Tawny stops her. Appears shed noticed the camcorder Id set up on its stand next to my chair. Tawny whispers something in Tickles ear, they both turn towards me staring daggers. They grab up their clothes, dont even bother to change, strut off with heads held high, and sped off in their convertible. So I go into full damage mode and show up outside their balcony with a Mariachi Band. Apparently they are amused by the giant sombrero Im wearing and so they relent enough to let me them take them dancing on Saturday. Now its summer in DC and the club scene is a little slow. Got a good friend whos a DJ at a downtown club and he says hell play anything I want and the crowd will go along. Ok the shooters will be lined up and Im ready to bust some moves. Need some dance music here! Lets get going the gals are waiting!
  18. Thanks for sharing this with us Jazz. I'm ashamed to admit that although I admire his work I don't have a single piece in my collection. Question, would "Kind of Blue" or "Milesstone" be available with a quality remastering on CD? While I am at thanks to you and others for helping me out with tracking down a certain type of jazz music. Picked up Pete Kelly's Blues and it's exactly the type of music I was after. I'm in the process of picking up a couple more in this genre. Thanks again, everybody. A very god example of what makes this place special.
  19. Active, I had gone to the site before posting, but wasn't about to go through the registration process without looking over terms and conditions and checking for uptodate secutrity certificats. The links to terms and conditions will not pop up which puts you in the position of giving out info wihthout knowing what it will be used for. Not good. Was able to find one article online where the author had talked to the folks who put this sight up. He, like you, seems to think its probably legit. However, the guy he talked to freely admitted that most people can't get the full five friends to sign up so they usually don't get an ipod. While this type of scheme is not technically a Ponzi scheme it's still not a very nice way to makret products. Reminds me of the "friends and family" nonsense one of the telephone companies was marketing for a while. Believe me I'm not slamming you, and I appreicate you letting us know about it, but it's not for me.
  20. Welcome If you like the sound of the KG 4's you might want to consider climbing the KG ladder. I've got the 5.2's and they have are nicely smooth and detailed yet have plenty of bass slam and if you're a rock and roller you'll like them. They go for between $300 and $400 and the KG 5.5's for about a $100 more. I occasionaly run my 5.2's with a Marantz 2015 which is a smaller version than your Mrantz and they match up very well.
  21. Pair of KG 5.2's 1 KV 2 2 Kg 1.5's above used in main HT and dual 2 Channel setup Pair of Kg 3/5's used in basement system. bough them new and stilllove them. Promedia 2.1
  22. Be careful with something liek this especially if a credit card is involved. If you need to sign up 5 friends it's most likely a variation of the classic and ever-popular Ponzi scheme.
  23. You're obviously far too intelligent to be allowed near regular schmoes like us. Needed to go back to college just to read the post. Very good Neo!
  24. There's a lot of people here that have done various things to their Khorns. In terms of crossovers we have a couple of specialists, one, DeanG must be away this week because he hasn't posted. Try a "Search" in the upper right hand corner of the forum and you'd be suprised at what you'll find. Something tells me your Khorns sound really sweet and you're friend is just jealous because he dropped a ton more dough into his ssytem then you did. It's your ears and of course we here at the Klipsch Forum absolutely discourge our members from tweaking, experimenting, fiddling and and otherwise fooling around with their systems. If you even think about it we will be sending the Klipsch Police around to knock on your door.
