  1. Yeah these things are getting mroe and more complicated. A lot of people have to actually pay people to set them up for them. My Denon 2803 is almost as confusing as my computer. Must have been designed by Bill Gates.
  2. I'm reluctant to interpose my opinion here. I guess I really am a wishy washy liberal. I guess some people might be moderatly perturbed (upset would be too strong a word in this case) if they post a topic in a paticular section only to have it moved. For example, I solicited music suggestions in 2 Channel two weekends ago and posted a review of cd's purchased as a result of that thread. My reasons were twofold: one the DVd section seems to be where music threads go to die. Second, I thought I'd get better suggestions there. Poeple who have been here for a while know the layout and know where and why they are posting a particular topic. On the other hand I've posted topics in the General Fourm (i.e. What was Your Best Score Ever) because that's where they rightly belonged. In general I try to stay away from getting too political here despite my own strongly held opinions because by and large they don't belong here. But once there're up I'm willing to let them run their course. Don't post any of my own in this forum (except for one ocassion-couldn't figure out how to edit it). Participated in the Topic about Henry Waxman only to point out the high regard he is held in on both sides of the Isle over his ABILITIES, not his political views. Stayed out of the Reagan thread because the controvesy my own views would have undoubtably caused. Don't envy you this part of your job Amy. I applauded closing down the thread after the extremely viscious atack on one member who was kind enough to review entry level DVD players for us. Same for the hijacking any vitrol associated with the fellow who was trying to sell some gear in 2Channel. On the other hand (told you I ws wishy washy) the same weekend this is going on a member posts a gun thread for crying out loud. While I was amused that with the weaponry some of those guys are packing they can play their music as loud as they want, guns are inherently a controversial political subject in this country. Gun threads have nothing to do with audio and one must wonder why they continue to be tolerated here.
  3. Michael, the case will be glued corner to corner so I want a clear glue. One of the acquarium sites recommended glue that seeps through by osmosis and another guy on the same forum recommended something I never heard of before. Sorry I can't give you brand names until I track down the link back to the thread on the site. By further explanation, the case will have four pieces, the top will have holes driled in it for ventilation, two sides (probably with some handles atached via screws) and a cross-piece at the front of the case. I 'm bringing the top of the case up a couple of inches so the heat won't deform the acrylic. This means I'll need the front piece for structure with the rear left open for further ventilation. Need a clear seal so it won't look crappy.
  4. Manfred, forgot to add how does one retire at age 54? That's my age and I'm still stuck in the grind. MD, professor or what? Oh, looked at your system I;ll trade you the Yammie for those Macs! (straight up deal, or course)
  5. Manfred: Dual power supplies, weight 14 kilos, steel case, steel whisper quiet loading tray, three seperate circuit boards, 18 bits, Toslink Direct and Filtered, Coax and analogue connectors. Originally $1000, bought it for $70. You're right. It's a piece of junk! I think I'll throw it in the trash.
  6. If you've got a spare optical cable try that. Could just be a cable. Also, some recievers make you assign the type of connection in the setup menu although this does not sound like that type of a problem. Probably has to go back to the store you bought it from
  7. Piranha. Curious about DreamnTheater. If this mood music? Electronica. New Wave? You get the idea.
  8. Thanks Formica. Good mod article and a good mod website. I also found some useful information on acquarium building sites. Michael I don't have a planer, but I do have drill press so I'll probably attach a sanding block and tighten up the specs from the overcut that way. Don't have CAD so I went low tech and bought some layout paper and a protractor. What I want to do for the 299A is drill holes with the press to spell out HH Scott in the venting area. I've polished up the inside of the amp and just painted the transformers with a high gloss black this weekend. The case comes next. Can anybody recomment a good glue for joining these pieces? I'll post pics when done. Hopefully this one will go much better then my first attempt.
  9. Spot on Lynn. Cost effective, reduces the expense of customer service, and referrals are sure to generate considerable additional sales. Got a friend I turned onto Klispch shopping for a set right now. Me, I'm saving for a pair of new LaScala's. In the last year just the Prommedia 2.1, Klipsch monster cables direct from Klipsch and a new Tweeter for KG 3.5 whcih by the way were purchased new retail from an authorized dealer in 1996.
  10. Oh no! You're telling me water's bad for horns. Just got finished giving my kg's there annual shower (used Dial to give them a fresh smell and 24 hr protection). Guess I'd better not plug them into the amp for a while longer. Seriously, talk about a horror story. Hope you're not a camp councellor. You must scare the crap out of kids around the campfire.
  11. Fini's clone may think he's the same as the original but we know he's a pale imitation. He's lacking, oh say, a soupcon of peckishness or perhaps a dash of the droll. And, hey, not even a pinch of irony!
  12. There's just too many sad songs out there so I'll go with two by John Prine: Sam Stone Hello in There (about old age)
  13. Darn you hitting me with classical greek references after two glasses of wine. Does that make me a Retsina? Darn educated labor skates. My minds dull right now so are you referring to Alcibiades engaging in proskynesis in Iran? Now as I recall it Aristotle had been told of an elephant trained to pay proskynesis to a king, by blowing the kiss with his trunk, but Aristotle did not belive that elephants could bend both knees at once. Of course, free greeks and what befitted an elephant did not become a Hellene. I guess that makes me a Hellene. Or does it make me a Macedonian? Learned this story from a book about Alexander the Great. I'm thinking of becoming Swiss though. Voltaire said: If you see a Swiss banker jump out of a window, follow him, there's money to be made on the way down. Or maybe a Kushan. From John Updike's The Coup: Kush is a land of delicate, delectable emptiness, named for a vanished kingdom, the progeny of Kush, son of Ham, grandson of Noah. Their royalty, ousted from the upper Nile in the forth century by the Christian hoards of Axum, retreated from Meroe, fabled home or iron, into the wastes of Kordofan and Darfur, and farther westward still, pursued by dust devils along the parched savanna, erecting red cities soon indistinguishable from the rocks, until their empty shattered name, a shard of grandeur, was salvaged by our revolutionary council in 1968 and, replacing the hated designation of Noire, was bestoyed upon this hollow starving nation as many miles as years removed from the original Kush, itself an echo: Africa held up a black mirror to Pharonic Egypt, and the image was Kush.
  14. Last weekend I solicited suggestions from 2 channel folks to help me fill out my music collection. Some I already had, some the store didnt have so I ended buying 12 cds. Im posting the review here because thats where the original thread was started. My apology's to anyone who thinks it doesnt belong here. Given the fact that we all have different tastes in music this was something of an experiment. Im glad I did it. Overall it was a success and Im very pleased with the new tunes/bands I have been turned on to. Reviews, like musical tastes are subjective, so if you dont agree with me no insult intended. Scoring: well be using the K for Klipsch system. Five Ks being the top score. Scoring Categories: Overall Score; Toe-Tapping Potential; Would I Sleep with the Lead Singer and Sound/Recording/Mixing Quality First up: Tchaikovsky 1812 by Telarc (2001 not 1978 recording) Whats to say. Tons of special appearances by about 20 other musicians. Great rock and roll. Only quibble is the drummer. He's only so so, and since he drives the beat it can get a little repetitious. Overall: 4 Ks; Toe-Tapping: 5 Ks; Sound/Quality 5 Ks (excellent considering its live); Sleep with Lead: 0 Ks (Id have to be very, very drunk and very, very gay) Dido No Angel A lovely album with a lovely voice and a nice mix of instrumentals and electronic groves. Very good lyrics. Definitely worth repeat listening. Overall: 4 Ks; Toe-Tapping: 4 Ks; Sound Quality: 4 Ks; Sleep with Lead: 4 Ks FYE Selects the Blues A music chain sampler of the blues. Overall: 4 ks ; Toe-Tapping: 4 ks; Sound Quality: 5 ks; Sleep with Lead: N/A Red Elvises Your Favorite Band Live 2 cd recording of some crazy Russians doing early rock, rockabilly and Russian gypsy songs, mostly in English. Rachael Yamagata Happenstance Alanis Morisette meets Suzanne Vega. Forget Diana Krall, this is the real deal. Major pipes, great lyrics, fabulous instrumentals with an edge to it. Donna the Buffalo Positive Friction Even if you dont like bluegrass you may very well like this album. Instrumentals are great and singing is cohesive and lyrical. Only problem is they need better lyrics. Lyrics on some songs are trite. Like it though. Overall: 4 Ks; Toe-tapping 4 Ks; Sound quality: 5 Ks; Sleep with Lead: Take it from personal experience, never, ever, sleep with a buffalo They Might Be Giants Apollo 18 Bubblegum meets early 60s British Pop and art tunes. Its fun, and very well recorded, a combination slacker/indie project, but for me the replay value is low. The younger whippersnappers might like it though. Overall: 3 Ks; Toe-tapping 4 Ks; Sound Quality: 5 Ks; Sleep with Lead: nah Jennifer Warnes the well Great voice, great lyrics, sets a mood, a smidgen of country to enliven things and great instrumentals. Excellent. Overall: 4 Ks; Toe-tapping 3 Ks (more of a close your eyes and listen kinda cd) Sound Quality: 5 Ks; Sleep with Lead: Hes a guy for crying out loud! Josh Groban Josh Groban This is easy listening music at its best. A young curly haired fellow with great pipes singing in a variety of languages. Im not into this music a whole lot but if Im in the mood in will definitely go on the player. Overall: 3 Ks Toe-tapping: 3 Ks; Sound Quality: 5 Ks; Sleep With Lead: Come here you lovely young thing. Overall: 5 Ks; Toe-Tapping 4 Ks; Sound Quality: 5 Ks: Sleep with lead: more then willing so sleep with the female half of the band Jet Get Borne In your face rock. Head banger music. Overall: 5 Ks; Toe-Tapping 5 Ks; Sound Quality: 10 Ks (awesome mix); Sleep with Lead: 5 Ks (Need a cold shower just thinking about it!) The Winner: Asylum Street Spankers Runner Up: Rachael Yamagata
  15. Come back guys. We'll laugh about it over a good underwear thread!
  16. We have a member on this forum. Kenratboy who works at BB. Send him a PM (private message) and I'm sure he'll give you some good advice. The problem, of course, is it's almost impossible to get a good listen at BB because their speaker rooms suck. Your ears are the final determinate of speaker choice and remember your two mains are the absolute most important part of the whole setup. Put you money in the mains, because you'll also be playing music with these. Finally, take them home, get them positioned right (plenty of help available here on placement, room acoustics, setup etc.), do what's know as critical listening with a movie/music you really know well. If you don't like them take them back and try another system. Don't feel guilty about a return, if BB did their job right you'd have a much better idea of what you liked before you left the store.
  17. Poor baby! Too much gear and no place to play it. You could become a new form of street musician. Grab a system, hit a busy street corner, and put out a hat! (you'd need a really, really, really long power cord, though) Forget the private office. You got a bathroom where you work? Nothing better, great acoustics. A few bass traps and you're in business. You've obviosuly caught the Klipsch forum disease. Before I joined, I had a couple of speakers, receiver a cd changer. Didn't realize how unhappy I must have been (check my system profile).
  18. A well thought out reasoned approach to the topic. Yeah two channel may be going the way of independent radio stations with the development of totally niche markets. There's no queston HT is driving the market, but there's still plenty of music lovers out there and more being made every day. The younger folks will start out with basic systems, but as they work their way up the economic food chain they'll be gettting better equipment. They'll also learn the number one rule of gear. Weather HT or 2 channel, your most important purchase is your two mains. Period. Past 40. Why I have corns older then that sonny! Flame wars. Some flame wars are really not flamers, but hotly debated scrums over ridgidly held positions. Some should be pulled, but others should stay. I'm not saying it's an easy call, but from what I've seen in my time here, some of these threads shouldn't have been yanked. Some like the flame on a member reviewing budget DVD players should have been pulled. The way that member was insulted was way over the line. Remember, the gear is the way to the music. Music lovers tend to be intelligent people. IF WE DIDN'T WANT OPINIONS WE WOULD NEVER LISTEN TO THE LYRICS. Klipsch must expect a certain amount of rowdiness, if not they have absolutely no idea why many people buy their speakers. Time and time again on this forum, I've seen people who thought their replies were over the line, have immediately apologized and softeneded their tone or expanded upoon their post to clarify their thinking. This is the way to go. I for one am not looking over my shoulder, wondering what the corporate suits think when I launch a thread, but I am thinking about wether it will inform, or entertain, teach or learn. "All politics is local" Tip O'Neill
  19. They'll be on the road in July and August behind their new album (Mojave) which will be released on June 29. IMO If you like rock this is the concert to see this summer.
  20. I'm new blood and I'm here to stay. Problem is I have no technical chops at all so it's up to the rest of you guys to teach. We have lost some important people though, and I while I appreciate their stand, I hope they'll calm down, come back and pitch in together to take some of the edges off yet keep the juices flowing. I mean who will start another underwear thread?
  21. Thanks Nicolti. Hadn't thought it through. Yeah I guess the sound would take a hit, but would the rears really have to be powered? I mean there's really not a lot of juice running through speaker wires. Not a very technical fellow, but isn't it mostly signal transference?
  22. Maybe I'm wrong, but I presume he uses at least one of them, or does he use a 1990's clock radio. Since the beginning of the year I have acquired 2 tube amps, and six ss amps/receivers (shootout review coming soon). For the ss amps it was to put them on display in basement to fill up a cubbyhole that needed something in it. For about thr price of two museum posters, with wooden framing I got the six pieces o fnice looking gear. However, they won't just sit. About once a month they'll be swapped into one of my two systems for a slightly (and sometimes dramatcialy) different sound for my listening pleasure. The best of both worlds to me.
  23. Sounds very cool. But what I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY want is a wireless rear speakers for HT. Something like a Bluetooth transmitter to get sound from the reciever to the rears without runnig wires all over the place. Anybody know if Klipsch or anybody else is working on this?
  24. Dave I appreciate yor comments and I'm fully prepared to put up with a little "Sturm" to get to the "Drang". Pablum, your right in one respect. Advice given on this Forum is not coming from on high. There are other sources of knowledge. In my bookmarks are links to Audio Asylum, Audio Review.com, Audio Karma, and about a half a dozen others. Anyone reading my posts and threads knows I make absolutely no claims to technical expertise, I'm a learner more then a teacher. I also appreciate when strongly held views are debated whether audio, politics or even the weather, there's going to be some birckbacks flying and that's not necessarily bad. When I was in college I would often toss out a controversial statement just to rile the professor. It was done not to annoy but to draw him/her out of their rote delivery and get them to really engage the subject at hand. By doing this I was able to tap into their knowledge, learn a lot and often get them to remember why they became teachers in the first place. However, guy, even though I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt, I suspect you like controversy a little bit more then the give and take of a good earnest debate. Think about it. Medeneen is one of my numerous hero's on this site. A guy who probably thinks in wave sines, yet, capable and willing to "dumb it down" so the rest of us can learn. Anything this fellow says is fully worth our consideration. Finally to the rest of the respodents. Couldn't be better. I posted this thread cause I truly didn't know a damn thing about monoblocs. I was also sure after a thread search that nobody had asked the basic questions about monos, and I'm sorta sure I'm not the only one on this forum to be ignorant in this regard. Thought I was finished didn't you. Not without a shamless plug for some upcoming threads I'm working on: Review of 12 cd's recommended by Forum Members; 70's and 80's receiver/ams Shootout (7 specimens from the golden age of the stereo wars) the ultra super secret forum wide thread, and my personal favorite: The Underwear Thread Redux!
  25. Thanks guys. I think it's an interesting experiment given the widely disparate tastes we all have in music. Suffice it to say, by the weekend I will have gone through all of them and will be prepared to start a new thread offering up my thoughts. Like most critics I intend to be biting and savage in my analysis and throughly savage any pretentions you may have to musical chops. Just kidding. I'm an old softy when it comes to music. My taste are so wierd I have actually witnesed massive rolling of eyes with the simple statemtent: "hey, guys you got to check this one out". Rick, got the EYE blues sampler on right now. As soon as my ear cleaning kit comes in I'll see if I can find that low mhz thump for you.
