  1. Maker's Mark Kentucky straight bourbon whisky.
  2. I had Chuck (Tarheel) over this afternoon for a totally non-scientific and pointless comparison test between three amplifiers that I've got in my system. The speakers and source are as follows: The speakers are hybrid k-horns using bass bins with the backs closed in. The horn section is Altec 511-b horns with 902 drivers with Beyma cp-25 tweeters on the outside. The crossovers are ALK universals. The source is a Sony S9000es disc player. Amp # 1 Kailin Chinese tube amp Amp # 2 Harmon Kardon 630 ss reciever Amp # 3 Fisher X-100 tube amp Song List: It's Easy/JJ Cale Eric Clapton/Road to Escnodido I'm an Old Cowhand/Sonny Rollins/Way out West Sultans of Swing/Dire Straits Couple More Years/Jerry Lee Lewis,Willie Nelson/Last Man Standing The point is to see if Chuck can guess in a blind test which amp is playing when and to rank the three in terms of overall sound quality. I'm hoping Chuck is still sober enough to reply.
  3. Here's one board almost done. I'm still waiting on a resistor from Parts Express.
  4. Nah don't worry about it I've got lots of extras. What you can do besides the whisky is bring your cd of Way Out West. We'll put it in the mix.
  5. Well old man, if you don't swill it all down tonight maybe you can bring some over tomorrow for the Battle of the Cheap Amps.
  6. Making some progress here. All of the inductors are attached to the board with 8'' cable ties. I glued the caps in place with a hot glue gun. There is a lot of stuff packed onto this board. I would say that this network is slightly more of a challenge to assemble than a ALK universal. Anybody that wants to build these for their cornwalls the plans can be downloaded ALK's website. I noticed a thread the other day where guys were telling about their first Klipsch experiences. This is kind of my tribute the first cornwalls I listened to back in 1976. Hopefully these babies will bring em back to life.
  7. I've got close to 350 bucks in them. Here's a shot of me screwing some stuff to the board.
  8. Yes, I would think so. He's never even had the backs off them since he got them in 75.
  9. I've got all the parts together to build a pair of networks for a friend of mine who has a pair of 1975 Cornwalls that have the original crossovers in them. It might take me a few days to get them done as I am actually backed with work right now, which is unusual for construction in these parts at this point in time. I'll post more pictures as the build progresses.
  10. I got em. I found some Dayton non-inductive resistors with the correct values at Parts Express. Thanks for taking the time to help out Marvel.
  11. This is getting frustrating. I have not been able to locate a 10w 5.6 ohm non-inductive resistor any where. I emailed Al at ALK last week and have not heard from him. Any ideas?
  12. I'd like to see the Cardinals win but if the game is close I predict the refs will find some way to give it to the Steelers just like the last time they were in it. Steelers 24 Cards 21.
  13. These resitors I got from Mouser have XICON stamped on them.
  14. Dean, thanks very much for your post and taking the time to share your pictures. They will be a big help along with your parts suggestions. I ordered the 12 watt resistors from Parts Express. I can't believe they are charging me 9 bucks to ship 2 resistors. I already have the terminal blocks and and solder lugs from Mouser. I already have the caps too. I'm using 2.2 Hovland music caps, 1.0 Harmony bypass caps and 6.2 Solen fast caps in the tweeter filter.
  15. How can tell if they are non-inductive?
  16. Speakerfritz, these resistors are to be used in a ALK type B network that I am building for a friend of mine for his 74 Cornwalls. Would there be any problems that you could see using the cement resistors in this application?
  17. between carbon resistors and cement resistors? Can they be interchanged if the values are the same?
  18. Hey Mark, since you retired maybe it's a good idea for the federal government to get into the tube amp bussiness. Why should us poor working people have to pay exorbinant rates for our amps? It's just not fair!
  19. Clearify what you mean by an sb part. Part A is the front panel of the bass bin. It's top edge will not need to be trimed as it is covered by the bottom piece of the top horn enclosure which laps over the front panel. Parts D and F can be made from a single piece of solid wood (doesn't have to be pine) or two or more pieces of wood glued up and then cut to size. If you have any more questions fire away as I have built several of these.
  20. I'm getting ready to build a pair of ALK type B networks for a friend of mine for his 1974 Cornwalls. I'll take pics and keep you all posted.
  21. Don't use the K-55s with 511-B horns. They will work but I've found that Altec 902s sound better. You can buy them new from Great Plains Audio.
  22. If you want them to sound great check out ALK networks.
  23. For a party put on some Stones and turn em up!
