  1. If stored properly you can delay any significant magnetic remanence decay well beyond 50 years. They don't yet know the upper limit. The Academy of Recording Sciences (the Grammy People) has set standards for backups after mastering and require the master be backed up in two formats. One is on a hard drive of a particular brand and format. The 2nd one is on anologue tape. The hard drives were failing, or format was obsolete and couldn't be replayed too often that they require an anologue tape backup. The problem was the defective polyester binder material that was used for a period of time towards the end of the technology. This results in sticky shed syndrome. The brands and types of tapes that have this problem are well documented. The other problem is tapes in the mid-50s were acetate. Acetate leaches acidic acid, and can eat through a metal can. When I went to Hope in 2011 to make safety back ups of some of Paul's original recordings, from the 50's, they all sounded great. Some were on acetate and I started making backups of those first. I used a Tascam for playback as it is known for having one of the gentlest transports ever made, The only "breaks" I encountered were where track splices were made and the splicing tape had just run of any holding power. This is very common in 50 year old tapes. I just re-spliced and moved on. He recorded most everything on 1/4" 2 track, and I want to say at 7.5 ips, but some of it could have been at 15. There was no 30 ips. I had no reference to compare it to, but this stuff sounded incredible. He had a deal with Shamrock so a lot of it was on Shamrock, which later was bought by Ampex. There was a Gathering going through so I dubbed a few different tracks onto a playback track and played some church organ music, a jazz quartet, and a train going through Hope (that Paul had originally recorded) for a few groups of people going through. One person said "there's no hiss, how did you do that?" He recorded on very good equipment, so there was that, but I used zero noise reduction of any kind. With plus 9 tape whatever little hiss was there was I can bury below the noise floor. Generation to generation does impart more noise with tape, But if it is recorded properly, you can't hear it in the typical recording process. Everything was on tape from the 50s to the late 70s before it reached vinyl. Early Beatles was on a 2 track, than a 4 track. There might be 10 overdubs as they bounced 2 tracks to one, and so on. There is no hiss in there, EMI was know for being able to overdub multiple times with minimal noise. It is one of those things you have to hear for yourself. But I don't know of many people who have heard a Tape Project tape that didn't think it was the best version they ever heard. I brought a still sealed reel of Kind of Blue to a little Klipsch gathering at LarryC's in Maryland which he played on his Revox, several people said it was the best version they had ever heard. There wasn't any hiss. But there is a lot of junk out there, like Columbia House 3.75 ips.
  2. Larry: [to Jennings, while high] Okay. That means that our whole solar system could be, like one tiny atom in the fingernail of some other giant being. [Jennings nods] This is too much! That means one tiny atom in my fingernail could be-- Jennings: Could be one little tiny universe. Larry: Could I buy some pot from you?
  3. From RTI Coolers FAQ, "Like other major competitors, the RTIC coolers are made in China in order to provide the best quality at the lowest price to you, the consumer. Just like many of the outdoor products you will buy at your favorite sporting goods store; overseas manufacturing is a cost effective way for retailers to provide an affordable product to its customers." My YETI was made in the USA, in Austin, Texas. If I wanted one made in China I could have got one at HEB Grocery Store. Academy just got a major shipment of tumblers in at the old price. Yeti totebags are made in Germany.
  4. I can tell you pretty much anything you need to know about him, what he drinks, etc. But not here.
  5. Schwin Cherry Crate, or Orange, or Cotton, never had one but sure stared at 'em on the store.
  6. But you don't live in a country where everything is criminal and thus you have to worry about criminals having more guns than law abiding country. You also don't live in a country where if you require things like gun registration, or limit handguns to the home, a tryant will suddenly emerge. As you have seen so reasonably and effectively argued in this thread, the only reason we have lasted this long is because the government is scared of all of the gun owners. It keeps em in line, closest tyrants stay closeted.
  7. Were you impressed? in the sense that i was in the same crowd as the president; but, wouldn’t have went to the event if we weren’t ordered to go. Just one of those times that you say to yourself “that’s the guy…" It is cool, very cool, regardless of who it is.
  8. There was another university shooting today, University of Northern Arizona, he can swing by on his way back home and politicize things there as well. Maybe he will just do a flyover.
  9. That was cool, NASA is cool.
  10. And you didn’t say Hi??? I tried to, but you were transfixed on George TGood
  11. I have seen Steve in action, he has the guts to be a parent. My sister and her husband raised two overachievers. When you let em run amuck it leads to problems. The biggest problem kids I have had as clients were from the wealthy high school, both parents were professionals and they threw money at the situation. Cars, trips, etc. If they get straight A's I say let em do what they want. If they are struggling with school you need to do everything you can to correct that, or they are going to be living with you forever.
  12. I was at that exact same show also with about 10 very close friends from college. They opened with under my tumb, I will never forget it. Some Girls was a great tour.
  13. It's my Belief that it's all Politics. I just don't see him getting the press for going to Chicago that he is getting with our local Tragedy! I look forward to the day when 10 or so oeople can be killed, by what whatever means, we have a president who responds by saying "no comment" or "its a local problem."
  14. What? Why? Is he going to take away guns while he is there? Is your sheriff going to refuse to meet with him? They don't have to meet with him if they don't want to and there is always a peaceful protest where ANY president travels, they set up areas for it. People can complain about whatever they want to. The president has made it clear that he want's more gun control. This is community that probably has higher gun ownership then many many community's. He could have came without the publicity that he seems to crave. Seems like this is just another photo op for him. I wouldn't put it past him to take some "Selfies with victims. My opinion is that he has POOR TASTE AND POOR JUDGEMENT. I realize we all have our own opinions and do not believe the same. Regardless of how this goes down. I'd like to see restraint here on the Forum. No president goes anywhere without publicity. The advance teams number in the 100s, FBI, Secret Service, State Police. Presidents don't take a poll before they decide to go somewhere. They just go.
  15. I think it works both ways. Notice that one of the victim's fathers (I think he was a father of one of them) went on Fox last night to complain that Obama should not politicize the tragedy. Re-cap: Guy goes on Fox, but not interested in politics. There's a lot of pot-calling going on in this situation. Well that is the biggest bunch of horse manure I have ever heard. Bakers bake, plumbers plumb, and politicians politicize. Every current candidate is speaking about that incident. Why? He was already scheduled to be in Seattle, what would they say if he did a Bush "flyiver." Historically speaking, and to put this thing into context, Ronny was an expert at it. He politicized his own shooting and signed a law banning machine guns and some assault weapons. He politicized the horrible injuries to his press secretary and supported the Brady law and a ten day waiting period after he was out office. Bush did a "fly over" after Katrina, got blasted and had to go back to LA and Mississippi. Remember him landing on the carrier, off of San Diego, and announced mission accomplished. LBJ snuck into Vietnam. Lincoln went near the front and got a photo with US Grant. They have been photo op ing since their were photos. I could go on, and on, and on. Presidents go to tragedies, unless they are busy, then they just fly over or send their VP, that is just history.
  16. Those are all great. I would add that one of the Muller's has a place in Austin that is rated No. 2 on a lot of lists. I prefer Smitty's but if you his Lockhart you might as well go to em all. I would put those all at a 9 or a 10. There is ine in Belton that is as good as any of those. But Franklin is in his own league. I never thought any BBQ was going to be worth a 3 hour wait, boy was I wrong.
  17. Don't forget the McRib sandwich at Mickey D's. I used to love those, but now I am wondering what the heck it is.
  18. Iwas interested to see how big the commotion was over the visit and went to the Oregonian to see what they were reporting. "Furor over the president's visit led the Roseburg City Council to issue a statement saying city officials will welcome Obama and "extend him every courtesy." Council President Tom Ryan said in an interview Tuesday that the statement – which referred to "misrepresentations" made by some people – was aimed at Jacques, who claimed to have the support of community leaders. If Obama "can help heal some families, more power to him," said Ryan, who also expressed concerns about what the president might say during his visit." The sheriff is reported as saying he doesn't want him there.
  19. Well he had many previous examples to follow, whether it is bad form or not: THE PRESIDENT: Governor, thank you. President Steger, thank you very much. Students, and faculty, and staff, and grieving family members, and members of this really extraordinary place. Laura and I have come to Blacksburg today with hearts full of sorrow. This is a day of mourning for the Virginia Tech community -- and it is a day of sadness for our entire nation. We've come to express our sympathy. In this time of anguish, I hope you know that people all over this country are thinking about you, and asking God to provide comfort for all who have been affected.
  20. What? Why? Is he going to take away guns while he is there? Is your sheriff going to refuse to meet with him? They don't have to meet with him if they don't want to and there is always a peaceful protest where ANY president travels, they set up areas for it. People can complain about whatever they want to.
  21. Which bill? The one after Sandy Hook? If that is the one I can post the bill and we can talk about what they were trying to do. I can also link all of the cspan hearings and the vote. If it is a state bill you are referring to, less luck on that.
