  1. Maron, I agree, generation to generation will add nosie to each sucessive generation. My question was, why, if you start with tape 1 and dub a copy (Copy 2a), and then dub another another copy off of tape 1 (Copy 2b), in other words two sub-masters from the same master, why will tape 2b have more noise, or sound different, then tape 2a, or will it? Dr. Who may have answered it, but I am not sure of the reasoning. Is it in theory that more noise is added to a source master (tape 1) each time it is played, or in practice? Does that mean that a tape gets noiseier and noisier each time it is played until the point that it is unplayable? I could see that in theory, but not in practice. 3M did testing on their tapes used in broadcasting and played, erased, recorded, and then played a tape 10,000 times with the claim that there was no differencing in recording quality. Ampex adopted these same claims and used them in their sales documents. Travis
  2. Luther, Old lives in one of the most beautiful places in North America, let's load up a bunch of parts, test equipment, etc. and fly up there and fix that thing, then hang out for a couple of days checking out all the sights and some sking at Whistler. Travis
  3. Well I am at zero, so we shall see,but I bet I have more at the end of the year. I will wager my Banana Splits LP (Fa la la, la -la - la la, one banana two banana, . . . ) against your Partridge Family Lp. I would normally toss them but I just hate throwing something away if someone could use it on here, I really thought I would not have any takers and I could toss them without a second thought. I am really glad Speakerfritz and Thebes could use them. Travis
  4. They are coming through fine now, thanks. Travis
  5. If you are listening through the tape monitor, and can only get some sound out with the input levels maxed, and the vu meters reading +6 or more (way in the red), you have a bias problem. I am not sure of the circuit in the teac, whether the bias and erase are through the same circuit or not, but if you hit record with the record levels at zero (meaning only the erase head is coming into play) and you rewind and can still hear the music, even at diminished levels, it is not eraseing properly. It sounds like that is part of the same problem as the lack of saturation of the tape. I think you are going to be looking at having to replace some components. That is rare for that machine at this point. Travis
  6. He lost in 5 sets, and had two match point opportunities. The first year it was broadcast live (Breakfast at W). Neat story about how NBC talked him into hiding in the mens room for 15 mins so they could show some intro stuff before the match started. Officials at Wimbeldon would not agree to start match 15 minutes later because "we have never done that." Looks like he is on his 3rd marriage, was arrested in Europe, while on the court, for a child support warrant of over $500,000 in back support. Bounced a check for 37,000 to buy a boat in Fla. and is now on probation. But he has found God and things seem to be looking up for him. Hope his second half was better then his first. So whats the decision on the exchange student. You must have a T-2000 in your collection right? Was Connors the first top ranked player to switch to a non-wood racket? I remember when everyone had a T-2000 or T-3000. Then a Prince. Is the USTA rule still the same; there is nothing that prevents a player from using two rackets? Or did they fix it? Maybe they didn't need to because noone is ambi enough to really pull it off.
  7. Justin, Why yes I was in an a cappella group! Back when I was about 10 or 12 at my church. This lasted for a about 30 mins. They suggested that I would like working with lights and sound better then singing. Turns out I was throwing the whole group off key. I can see why you say it is a blast, the girls in my group didn't look anything like the girls in your group. Hell, I would have just mouthed the words if I knew what kind of "tallent" turned out for Glee Club. It I knew then what I .... Travis
  8. You forgot the cut em up and dump em in Galveston Bay because I panicked (which was a not guilty). Her interests include *****. Never, never, never get involved with a woman who enjoys ***** or trap. Travis
  9. Mallette, I remember you from before you dropped out, I was just getting started. Welcome back! Are you recording anything through that DBX4, or just for playback? I do a lot of reel to reel recording and have always considered a 4 but have not had a chance to explore it enough. Travis
  10. Dr., I don't know, you would know a lot better then I would, I have not really dealt with anything that far up the chain except for some of the 2 track "masters" I have been able to buy, and they are incredible. That rasies a really big question because they essentially make one two track mixdown tape and that is sent to a (usually) a seperate mastering facility for the purpose of remixing so that it will work within the RIAA curve AND within the limits of the cutting head. When pre-recorded tapes were in vogue they would also mix a two track tape to be sent to the duplicating facility. Are you saying that if you take the first generation two track mix down tape, the one that is made from the studio multi-track tape, that if you make a copy of that 2 track tape (2nd generation) it would sound different then another tape also copied from the same first generation two track tape? If so why? Playing a tape does not cause degradation. Multiple sub-masters were made from the 1st generation two track tape on a routine basis for a number of reasons. Every greatest hits or best of lp, just one example, was made from several two track masters, depending on how many lps they were drawing songs from. If the sound changed when each time you went from same generation to same generation (i.e., tape 1, dub of 1st generation tape, thus a 2nd generation tape, tape 2, also a dub of 1st generation tape, thus a second generation) recording would be a useless process. That is why more lp's were mastered to 2 tracks on Ampex 456 then all others combined. It became a std. by which all machines were alligned, thus you could take a 1st generation tape and get an identical 2nd generation tape, regardless of machine, because everything was standard. It made it uniform. That is why there is a test tone at the begining of each tape, and usually each song, so that you can match them up exactly. I agree if you made subsequent 2nd generation tapes with different machnes at different settings they would sound dirrerent, but they didn't do that. The 1st two track tape has test tones so that the playback machine can be checked for allignment, and the recording deck is also checked for allignment. If they are both able to produce a PERFECT 1khz tone, the music should be audibly identical from tape to tape. I am interested to hear your thoughts on that. Travis
  11. Well, for sure nothing in the same caliber as the twins. They lay around a lot don't they? However, I think there is a major price having those two around so I guess they would not be free. If you ever need me to take them off your hands for a weekend be sure and let me know, I will hand deliver the next batch of "free" stuff. Travis
  12. Well, Its not free k-horns but I am trying to do my part. Speakerfritz and Thebes, They are all boxed up and ready to go to the post office tomorrow, I splint them right down the middle. Hope you get some good use out of them. Travis
  13. Cool, I got two responses, I am spliting them up and sending them out today. I am gla you guys could use them. Travis
  14. It depends on what you mean by the term "original master." If you are talking about the multi-track studio master they wouldn't use that. If you are talking about the 2 track mix-down master, they would make a sub-master from that and make everything from that I would think.
  15. Old, You either have bad tape (this is extreamly rare to have tape that will not take a recording, but it can happen) or you are getting no bias to the record heads You can tell real quick, if you have an blank space at the end of the good tapes you were listening to, even if it is just a few seconds, you can try recording a few secondsat the end to see how that sounds. However, there are a lot of things that are confusing about what you are saying. The VU meters, what were they reading when you were recording? What do you have your output levels set to? I assume you are at about the same output levels that you were at when you were playing the tapes that sounded good? When you made the tape were you listening through the source or the tape monitor? I am not sure what John meant about the tape being on backwards, other then it being twisted so that the shiney side in on the inside rather then the outside. He is dead on correct about trying to record with the tape on the wrong side out, it will sound exactly as you say. Ifyou cannot get a good rcording even on the tapes that played good, then you need to take Luther (wardsweb) o his offer to take you through cleaning up the controls. He recently went all through his Teac top to bottom and he would be a good resource. Travis
  16. Mike, I thought I sent you an email, how soon do you need it out of there? Travis
  17. Danny, Dats what I'm talkin' 'bout. Thanks for very much. Travis
  18. How did round two go with those latest suggestions? Any changes? Travis
  19. I always liked (Kramer, a Vegas boy. Las Vegas has a wierd association with tennis, Kramer, Agassi; Ponch had his tennis camp at the DI there for years, the asian player, I can't remember his name right now, is from there. Chang? I guess Rosco was only good if his serve was on, I saw him play at the Tournament they used to have in Vegas every year. Like it came out of a cannon. If he was making his first serve he won, if not, he was gone. I wonder what ever happened to him. Travis
  20. I have about 200 or 300plain white paper lp liners, some used, some brand new, that I have no use for. I use the polylined and have no need for these, and maybe noone else will either but I wanted to check on here first because I would hate to thown them away if a forum member needed them. Just let me know and I will send them out. Travis
  21. On the best player question, I did not see anyone mention Big Bill. Top rated player for 7 years, 2nd only to Pancho: Grand Slam record French Championships Singles finalist: 1927, 1930 Mixed champion: 1930 Wimbledon Championships Singles champion: 1920, 1921, 1930 Doubles champion: 1927 U.S. Championships Singles champion: 1920, 1921, 1922, 1923, 1924, 1925, 1929 Singles finalist: 1918, 1919, 1927 Doubles champion: 1918, 1921, 1922, 1923, 1927 Doubles finalist: 1919, 1926 Mixed champion: 1913, 1914, 1922, 1923 Mixed finalist: 1916, 1917, 1919, 1921, 1924
  22. Great question, wow. I am with Tom here. I assume that the student has been there the whole year, and has tried out the same time as the other students and is not trying to get on the team mid-season. First I would look to your athletic conference rules. In California an exchange student had the same status as a resident student if the student was part of a legitmate student exchange program (this rule was in place to prevent schools from recruiting students from outside the country, there were plenty of rules about poaching from other local schools, etc., but nothing from outside the country). If the athletic conference rules say that the exchange student has the same eligiibility status and will not cause the TEAM any eligilibity problems then my personal opinion is he or she plays. This is the U.S., this is the country where freedom allows for the very best to rise to the top without regard to race, religion or country of origin. If she is eligible she has to play. I think it sends the wrong message to the players not to start him or her, and they will learn too soon about compitition from foreign talent, or, as Tom said, young whipper-snappers. What if Tracy Austin's (now there is a name from the past) Dad decided to move from Rolling Hills, Ca. to WI between her Jr. and Sr. year. She doesn't play because she didn't start there as a freshman? Because she will only be there her Sr. year? I know she would play. The answer is no different just because the student goes back to their home in another country at the end of the year. In fact, it becomes more compelling to let him or her play. Not only are they here to study, they are here to learn about the U.S. and her people. The message that needs to be sent is, if you play by the rules, if you are eligible, then the best will play regardless of where they are from, who their parents are, what kind of car they drive, what color their skin is, or what god they pray to. In the U.S., if you are the best, you play. As a coach you know better then I, having this level of player on your team causes your whole team level to rise. I am sure the other players will acknowledge that having her play, and compete, will cause their level of play to rise. We had exchange students and they bumped very talantend people from our Soccer team, but my friends who were bumped understood, they still made the team, but did not play unless we were way ahead or way behind. Thank god they did not swim or golf or I would have been bummed. I know the arguments on the other side, but, in sports, dedication and loyalty don't get you a start on any team I know of. Travis
  23. Your handle makes a lot of sense now that I see that you posted during the superbowl, or maybe you just don't like Prince. Travis
  24. Coytee, Wow, deja vu time. My first experience was about the same year, 1977, I was a junior in high school. It was at a stereo store in San Jose, Ca. next to Valley Fair shopping center. They had a giant room dedicated to Klipsch, every speaker on display. He played the cornwalls and LS's for me on, I can't believe I remember this, an Acutrac linear tracking with laser tracking that would automatically find a particular track. After I heard the LS's I said to my self, "some day." I got KG4's the month after I got out of law school, I had student loans and there was no internet for finding good used stuff, so I had to wait another 15 years to get my LS's. Thinking back, there was another store about a mile down the road that also stocked Klipsch. I wish I could remember the names of those two stores. One was a high-end store and the other was kind of a mid-fi, lots of ads on the radio type of place. Thanks for the memories, Travis
