  1. You might have to talk to Dean or Al to supply full freq response, impeadence, harmonic distortion, and typical capacitance and inductance measurements. Hearing wise it made a huge difference in my old speakers. JJK
  2. It's a shame that every large economic power is trotting out their own idea of how to supply us with HDV. At last count there were about 10 different systems almost completed. I would hope that one of them wins because a player that will play ten different codecs in addition to what is already on the market would be real expensive. Maybe the size of the old 1927 radio consoles. Everybody wants theri own peice of the pie, and they do not want to pay royalties to Hollywood and Microsoft. JJK
  3. So far none of the previous songs mentioned can beat the star spangled banner for worst song ever. Even Pavorati can't sing it. JJK
  4. I have never ever heard good sound systems in a club. One of the best PA systems I ever heard was in Philadelphia airport in 1964. The best PA system I ever heard was on the Thule Greenland BMEWS (Balistic Missile Warning Site). A repair part number would be broadcast over the PA and the supply guy had 2 minutes to fetch and deliver. JJK JJK
  5. How are old, decreped parents going to tell the difference between vinyl and CD's? Oh, I forgot, anybody can hear all those pops, scratches, warbles, floor bumps, ham radio operators, hum, hiss, wow, flutter, thumps, 12 db bass cutoffs, siblents, groove rumble and the everlasting hope that the last play didn't chop off some high frequency stuff, especially if you smoke. JJK
  6. Tiny Tim "tiptoe through the tulips" "star spangled banner" (national anthem) The worst, most terrible song that was ever written period. If I was President that song goes out the door and a new one comes in. JJK
  7. RTTR: I agree with your parents. JJK
  8. You never said what the existing color is now but if you try to heat it off you then have to remove the glue and then you might get the speakers all icky-poo-poo. I used a product called "band-it" from Lowes but they didn't have black. Touch up and glue the bad places then probably paint it or stain it black. Try some small areas in the back of the speaker that are not critical to see what happens. There are special vinyl paints in spray cans available from any Corvette restoring magazine . JJK
  9. You might say the HiDef market is in a permanent state of flux. JJK
  10. Phase Technology's new Darts computer controlled system records (something) at each listener position on a labtop then uses that info to control their speaker system ($18,000.00) so that the sweet spot is simultaneously at each position. They use digital feeds to each speaker. Audyssey Labs in conjunction with the University of Southern California wrote the program for the control of the speakers. I did the following experiment in 1969 with the K-horns and Cornwall power derived center channel: Placed two Shure 360 degree cardoid mikes (50-15khz) 3 ft in front of each K-horn at mid range horn level and set the Ampex reel to reel to record. There was a party going on with people walking, talking, screaming singing, etc. After the party played the tape back at a reasonable volume and was astounded to hear all of the party members, sounds, phone ringing, etc. in their original positions while standing at any position in the room. The sweet spot was "all knowing". What was mind boggling was no matter where you stood in the room the people and sounds were in their correct position. My theory now is to record some kind of electronic control program ( like the available room echo or hall selections) the same way and incorporate that program into the amplifiers or pre-amps so that all records or CD's will perform the same way. Some nerdy numbers programmer into sound may be the answer. JJK
  11. PWK probably kept changing the opening to get the performance he wanted. Air flow, frequency, chamber volume, port opening position, port size all work together. If you matched the port probably something detrimental will happen. It's not like a performance engine which uses the same criteria but where the majority of the formula is air flow restriction. But then again who knows. But you would think that the entire port system would be shaped like an exponential horn. AH HA! Maybe that's how the K-horn was created. JJK

    video 101

Well, last trip to the audio/visual store I looked at the 1080P DLP Mitsubshi's and they were outstanding. Looked at the Runco $15,000 1080P projection setup in 2.35 x 1 screen and it wasn't bad but not as bright as the HDTV's and not as much contrast. Looked at the Sony SXRD 1080P with the Sony DVR demo and it was outstanding. Looked at the 4 projectors that cost about a zillion bucks in Damon's joints and was totally unimpressed. To see what is happening now you have to go to the AVS forum and look under your city. Currently they are voicing expletives about cable, satellite, and OTA. Is there anything else? The High Definition situation is total chaos for the laymen with the 1080P upconvert through the HDMI, etc. China, India, Russia, Taiwan, Germany, France are all coming out with their own codecs to work on standard DVD discs. Avelink and JVC have players that will play HD-WMV, M2t, TS, TP, JPEG files (2200 x2200) burned as a data file to standard DVD discs and dual layer discs. Bluray (Sony) & HD-DVD (Toshiba) are introducing players and burners for the new media, along with purchaseable movies. The Avelink and JVC players quality is outstanding but will only do 720P and 1080i. JVC D-VHS tape is still here and still cheap and still outstanding quality. Sony has some nice projectors that really kick butt for about $30,000.00. I currently have the JVC D-VHS VCR and the JVC SRDVD-100U player that play's my m2t files right out of my video editing software. I get about 30 minutes on a 4.7 disc and double that on a dual layer. It's as High-def as high def gets. Only problem is all of my friends and relatives don't know what to buy as the choices are numorous. So they are still watching analog. I have burned the Microsoft HD-WMV sample files with Nero to standard DVD-R and Dual layer +R discs with no loss in quality. Nero burns them as standard data files which the Avelink and JVC players post up as files, then you highlight the file with the remote and hit enter, wallah high def. These players will also connect via network cat5 to your computer and play from your computer. Taiwan was PRing that they were coming out with a tripple layer standard disc for 1.5 hr movies. Something in this market is going to pop but who knows what. The Russian/Indian consortium was PRing a 40 gig standard disc.HVT (300gig holographic disc) and HVX (1000gig disc) PRing for 2007 intro. There is no 1080P video on the broadcast scene but they are touting that the 1080p sets upconvert everything to 1080p and make everything look better. You as the customer, how can you loose!.HA HA. And now, here's the rest of the story---I can't stand it anymore. signoff. JJK
  13. Currently the following methods are available to play High Definition stuff: 1.....D-VHS tapes 720P JVC VCR 2.....DVD-R+R, Dual layer discs 1080i m2t, ts, tp, HD-WMV, jpeg files 1080i Avelink & JVC players. About 30 minutes for 4.7 gig disc, 1hr for dual layer. (JVC $370.00 at B & H) 3.....EVD format Chinese codecs on standard DVD-R+R discs 4.....FVD format Taiwan system on standard DVD-R+R, dual layer discs using Microsoft HD-wmv codecs with possible tripple layer discs. 5.....DMT format Indian/Russian codecs on standard DVD discs with possible 40 gig new discs. 6.....Bluray format 1080p Pioneer burner $995.00 (Videoguys) (Samsung) and others. 7.....Toshiba HD-DVD 1080i-1080p player $499.00 (Best Buy) 8. ...LG PR saying their player will play both Bluray & HD-DVD 9.....HVT holographic disc 300 gig intro 2007. 10...HVX holographic disc 1000 gig intro 2007. I have the JVC D-VHS VCR and the 100U player and the quality is outstanding. I have edited and burned high def m2t files to dual layer discs and played them with outstanding results. I have also burned HD-WMV microsoft samples to dual layer discs with no loss in quality. Ditto 2200 x 2200 jpeg stills. Nero burns these files as simple data files to the standard DVD-R discs. I have also edited and PTT to the JVC D-VHS deck with outstanding results. M2t is the resultant file that high def video editors use for HDV. (Sony Vegas, Adobe Premier, FCP, Ulead, etc) Basically the HDV spectrum is in the relm of 19 to 25 meg mpeg2 data streams. With today's HDTV's (720p) most people cannot tell the difference in quality. With 1080P HDTV's it's another story. The 1080P quality difference is about the same as from jumping from analog to 720P. Problem is no one will be broadcasting 1080P for a long time because of the bandwidth requirements. JJK
  14. Another idea down the drain. I suppose there is no other way to electronically "trick" the multiple drivers into working. I was remembering that PWK said the less the diaphram vibrates the less distortion it produces. JJK
  15. OK. Maybe somebody can explain in great detail what comb filtering interference is. JJK
  16. What if someone installed 3 tweeters, and 3 Corwall type midrange speakers, one aiming right, one center, one aiming left on K-horns with the crossovers delivering 1/3rd the power to each driver without affecting the bass horn? This would (not the bass horn) cut the distortion by 200%, the diaphram movement by 200%, increase the power handling by 200%, increase the directionality by a bunch, and increase the radiated area by 200%, all of this per given SPL for each individual person. Some talented person would have to come up with a special crossover network. JJK
  17. IB Slammin: Thanks for making my day. JJK
  18. A complete gut busting aluminum hemi goes for about 25k over the counter. This is very interesting. Wonder if I could get 20 miles per gallon. JJK
  19. If the JBL mid range and tweeters are as good as some forum members suggest why hasn't Klipsch incorporated them into the K-horn? Perhaps someone can enlighten us. JJK
  20. Dean crossovers, 3/4" pipe insulation glued to bass horn section to seal corners, Corwall center channel, Hughes expander/compander. JJK
  21. if you want to see the HD problems with satellite/cable/ota for your area the AVS forum has your city listed. Click on it and spend a couple of hours. You will then wonder how HD works at all . JJK
  22. We could use a few words from the "Coat hanger guy" on this thread. JJK
  23. The Audio store that I visit has a large room about 25 x 25 ft with a couch in the center and small Klipsch speakers and many other brands set up alonside them. The bass is not very good and they have this electronic thingy on the shelf which selects different combinations of amps and speakers which they do not know how to operate properly. They couldn't get the Klipsch subs to work at all. Their 1080P Mitsubishi DLP's looked real good though. If they put a set of K-horns in there with a Cornwall center channel people would go to Audio GA-GA Land. And if you use an equalizer to reduce the 100-400hz area 2 db you can reduce the "Tub Colorations" to minimum. I will agree that the Cornwall is a free spirit when it comes to colorations. JJK
  24. I will probably end up with both Bluray and HD-DVD players as my editing software is Sony Vegas & DVD-A and I doubt they will cut it for HD-DVD. JJK
  25. You should have added the following formats: 1...EVD---Chinese codecs on standard DVD discs 2...FVD---Taiwan using Microsoft HD -WMV codec on standard discs and also dual layer and tripple layer standard discs/ (30 minutes 4.7, 1hr dual layer) *** 3...DVM---Indian, Russian codecs on standard DVD discs. (40 gig disc maybe) 4...HVT---Holographic discs 2007 300 gigs 5...HVX---Holographic discs 2007 1000 gigs. 6...M2T transfer stream files on standard DVD discs (30 minutes 4.7, 1hr dual layer) *** 7...HD-WMV files on standard DVD discs. (30 minutes 4.7, 1hr dual layer) *** *** available now with Avelink and JVC SR-DVD 100U. Bluray the only one with 1080P. JJK
