  2. First pair of speakers I bought on my own were Mach 1's...[:$]
  3. Active duty USAF, 21 years, 1985-Present. Haven't posted in a while; I just got back this week from a tour to Iraq. It's good to be home...and back on the forum [] Dale
  4. I wholeheartedly agree...Get this DVD! I've only played the second disc, which is the performance of DSOTM w/a couple extras as an encore. Simply AMAZING, even on my crappy JVC player. Made my 'ole 5.5s sing [] Dale
  5. Our local PBS station was doing a fund drive this past weekend and played this DVD over and over again...Of course, I had to have it! Found it at Barnes & Noble, and I picked up the Pink Floyd "Live at Pompeii" DVD at the same time. Wow!!! I can't believe how good this DVD is! I played it on my crappy JVC DVD/VCR combo, through my 2-channel system. The sound was simply awesome! I've never seen Pink Floyd live, but I really think I've missed something special. Haven't played the "Live at Pompeii" disk yet, but I can't wait to. I visited Pompeii so many times while living in Italy. I'm trying to picture in my mind what the amphitheatre looks like with a rock concert going on. Dale
  6. Hmmm... Got to march in the Rose Bowl Parade my Senior year of high school... Been to the top of the World Trade Center, Chrysler Buidling, and Empire State Building, all in the same day. More recently, I got a ride in the back seat of an F-16. You really haven't lived until you've seen the Grand Canyon, from above, while flying upside down at 500+ knots. And then we pulled 9.1Gs! Got a base hit off of Alice Cooper at a charity softball game. With regards to Robin Williams in "Good Will Hunting", I've been to the Sistine Chapel, and I know what it smells like. Dale
  7. Thanks! I've read that Shure cartridges work well on Dual tables, I'll check that one out... If you're talking about Joel at the Turntable Factory, I have seen his sight. He is not taking any new business until the beginning of August when his assistant returns. I guess he's battling a lot of health issues right now. I 've found a couple of other sites that service Dual tables and I have no problem shipping it off but I would rather find someone more local, if possible. Dale
  8. All, After searching e-bay for several weeks, and getting outbid a couple of times, I was able to pick up this Dual 506 turntable last week for just over $70, including shipping. The 506 sold from '79-'80, and I think it's in excellent shape for its age. It doesn't appear to have had much playing time, and it even has what I believe to be the original cartridge, a ULM 55E made by Ortofon. Of course, I just had to fire it up right away (to make sure it worked []), so I grabbed a record I picked up at a garage sale a few weeks back, Ray Charles' "Sweet & Sour Tears" (ABC Paramount, ABCS-480, 1964). The sound that came out of that record was pretty amazing, I must say, although it did sound like Ray was singing in a tunnel. I don't know if that was the recording, or an indication of a problem. The table appears to hold it's speed pretty well, and it's dead quiet in operation. Since my last experience with vinyl was a Soundesign all-in-one system I had as a kid, I have many questions which I'm sure I can find answers to on this forum. Is there a way to tell if the cartridge needs to be replaced, just by listening, or should I just replace it? According to Rotel, this receiver only accepts MM cartridges. I've done a bit of research this weekend, and I would appreciate any recommendations. I'd like to spend less than $100, if possible. What about the drive belt? Are they pretty easy to replace? I'm wondering if I should just find a shop who works on Dual tables and let them go through it to make sure all is well. I appreciate your comments. Dale
  9. Me too neither, but I believe I've seen at least one with a "Pininfarina" badge on the side. Dale
  10. È bella! Have you seen the newer Alfa 164's? Very nice looking car, especially when sporting wide performance tires. I think they would sell well here in the States, as long as there is a good dealer network for service. When I lived in Italy, I would see the government VIP-types being chauffered around in bullet-proof 164's all the time. They were easy to spot because they all had a little blue police light that they would keep flashing so traffic would clear out of their way. I wonder if that would work here? [] Dale
  11. Ah yes, fine German beer...Personally, I prefer a nice cold Paulaner Munchen, especially while enjoying it at the Hofbrau Haus[]Dale
  12. Maybe the file size isn't the problem...For some reason, using the "Insert Image" doesn't work. This allows you to see the pic in your message before you post. Got to the "Options" tab and add the pic as an attachment. You won't be able to see the pic, but that worked like a snap for me. Unfortunately, if you try to add a second pic it will write over the first one. Dale
  13. Congrats on the 5.5's...You got a screamin' deal. There's another pair on E-bay right now w/an opening bid of $150, and no one has shown any interest. If you have these on carpet, I recommend using the spikes as well. I could hear a difference in the bass response. Enjoy! Dale
  14. Mike, No, it wasn't at CS-5000...But, there are many Dual and Thorens tables on E-bay right now, including a TD-160. I'll check them out. I've read that belt drive tables are the best, but what about semi-auto or auto? I my memory serves, the TD-160 is a semi-auto table. Incidently, the TD-124 went for $610, and I think I saw another going for more than that. Dale
  15. Here it is, the 4th of July Weekend...The sun is shining, the birds are chirping...And somehow I came down with a cold! That really s**ks![:@] Oh well, it gives me more time to be on the forum...
  16. Thanks guys, I really appreciate your thoughts...Check out Fremer's latest article in the Jul issue, in which he goes back to his old alma mater Cornell and demonstrates CD vs vinyl using a Radio Shack Optimus CD-3400 portable player and a $299 Poject Debut III table. Pretty interesting... I have always been a member of the start small-build later school of thought. Right now, I only have a handful of records to play anyway. But, I'm willing to jump in and excited to learn more about our hobby[] Dale
  17. Depends on the music...For rock n' roll, it's usually beer. For classical or jazz, I'll break out the 12-year old Scotch. Dale
  18. Easy..."We Are the Champions", Queen. Woo Hoo, 100th post[<)] Here's one: "They call me Mr. Farenheit, I'm travelling at the speed of light."
  19. LOL...For the record, I just happend to remember that Fremer mentioned this unit a couple of issues back. I agree that his unit was decked out to the max, so maybe this one would not be up to his standard. I usually take most of what I read in Stereophile with a grain of salt, mainly because the reviewers tend to come off a bit pretentious. Frankly, I'll probably never be able or willing to spend that kind of money on audio equipment, but it's nice to dream As for my budget, I was thinking $150-$200 for a good table w/tonearm and cartridge, considering that I can buy a new Project unit for under $300. I'm just getting back in to vinyl, so I don't want to spend a ton of money and then not use it that much. Dale
  20. Thanks for the advice...A few weeks ago, I got out-bid on a Dual TT in the last 30 minutes! I learned my lesson then, but at $500 this one is a little too rich for my blood. I'm trying to pick up some speakers right now, too. Dale
  21. Alright, all you vinyl aficianados...Saw this on E-bay, and I remember that Michael Fremer raved about this table in Stereophile. What say y'all? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=012&item=220001814311&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1 Dale
  22. Michael, You make a lot of sense..Normally, I couldn't stand speakers with no bottom end either. I just think the Fortes are going to be too much for my small room, and not only in the footprint. I may not be able to place them very far out from the wall, either. I've been looking at Reference and Synergy bookshelfs as well, and I could mount a pair on some stands. Any recommendations there? Dale
  23. Michael, I found a pair of Heresy's locally that I'm proably going to go look at today or tomorrow. The serial #'s are 89T871 and 89T681. Maybe you can help decifer those for me. The guys tells me they are from the late 70's and from the pics they look to be Walnut Oil. He is asking $400, but I'm thinking I can get them a bit cheaper. I'll primarily be listening to classical and jazz on this system as it is my office and I do need to be able to concentrate (My days of studying to heavy metal are over). Copious amounts of bass are not really a concern, but space is. I have to consider the WAF you know []. Dale
