the velo hgs 15/18 do seem to be the standard for every other sub to come out under their price range (& the hgs are high price) i may have to try an svs w/ my hgs-18. also sounds like sv is working on some newer ones. how's the pitch definition on music? does the kick-drum sound like it's right there in your room? tight?
  2. like myram says, w/ a digital cable box w/ a single digital out rca jack (like the scientific atlanta explorer 2000 has), all you need to do is run a single line from that to the digital coax input of your receiver. then any digital signal feed is decoded by your receiver's decoder. if the signal is broadcast/encoded in DD 5.1 then you'll get that. that's a big if though. usually it's sent only dolby 2.0 which the receiver decodes in prologic. if it's an analog station/signal you get no digital signal/output. if your digital box doesn't have a digital out jack, u may want to ask the cableco if they can give u a newer box that does.
  3. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. PWK! Thanks so much for the great gift you've given!
  4. aaron, i was considering getting some rs-3 for ht surround speaks. klipsch actually calls them wdst- wide dispersion surround technology speakers or dipolar. most people say best for HT surround effects as they send sound in 3 directions for a 180 degree soundstage (as opposed to direct radiating speaks which many feel best for music). quite a few on this bb that actually own them. ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  5. it's the stations (source) I tell ye think of time warner & their dig box as your dvd player & the channel (like starz) as the dvd. if u put a dolby surround (2.0) disk in your dvdp, u can't blame the dvdp for not putting out DD 5.1. time warner service people in most cases aren't even aware that it's not them, it's their feeds (which they pull off of sat.)

    ht set up

no 4 channel full range for stereo on mine anyway. i thought some of the newer sony's now have that though. does yours have any modes called 4 or 5 channel stereo? other makes certainly do. such as denon, marantz...

    ht set up

w/ my sony u can only run the 4 speaks w/ sub in one of those $% dsp modes. u could a+b & run afd, then you'd have to get another set of rear surround speaks for ht. i'm considering doing this by putting a pair of rs-3 on top of the (yes rear) cornwalls & running the corns as Bs in full range stereo (do them the justice they deserve. ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  8. i did get the movie civil action in DD 5.1 once from the starz channel. it's up to the broadcasters/channels/stations to do it. time warner basically just provides the cable & box.
  9. mdog, i had a pioneer QX-747(quad) in the early 70's & set off it's protection circuits on a regular basis. is that receiver rated 180 rms or peak? klipsch are loud speaks. & those klf can handle 600 watts peak. but the receiver distorts so much at that level that it breaks. u want loud, get a new receiver/amp w/ less distortion.
  10. as long as you can control the delay on each of a & b surrounds using a+b i don't see why not. 9.1? wish i had a receiver capable as far as a source i think you'll only get 6.1 DTS discrete. but there's still the hybrids such as your denon's are capable.

how bout the ht? does it have some punch/slam?
  12. yea h i thkn that was me & it continues to drive me nuts too. it only happens on movies in dolby (2.0/prologic or DD 5.1) either from the dvd or the digital cable box. i keep thinking it's the dolby mix & receiver effects overloading the rc when there's that loud voice or scream in a movie. i'm going to take the rc to the dealer & have them do a frequency sweep just to rule out the rc. i'll let u know. 13. oh, sorry but I believe the heresy II only come new in pairs. maybe not or u can split a pair w/ someone.
  14. stu, the match you're looking for is a tonal match. you'd definitely want to match horns w/ horns. wouldn't mess w/ another co. for a center. though klipsch chart recommends the klf c-7, i would think a heresy II would be better. i'd say it's between those 2. 15. yea I use those digital cable music channels all the time. sounds much better than FM radio & no commercials! even when I was getting the starz channel, only 1 movie ever came in DD 5.1 - Civil Action. the rest of the movies I saw/heard used only dolby surround (2.0). so i guess even if the stations have the dolby digital equipment, they don't always show movies mixed in DD 5.1. i know, here goes another cable/sat thread, but these boxes will probably soon replace dvd as the hot new a/v source. but anybody know what basic sound equipment these broadcasters use? dat?
  16. the guy who defined the measure of frequency &/or PWK's uncle?
  17. stone, the cable digital boxes are ready to go for 5.1. the decoders are in most of your ht receivers. i did get DD 5.1 once on the starz channel - but only had that for a 3-day free preview we need more of the broadcasters/channels to comply w/ DD or DTS 5.1. hopefully they will soon.
  18. i also run the box 2 audio outs to the tv then to the receiver tv/dbs analog jacks. that way i can control the volume to all speaks w/ just the tv remote. u may be able to get 5.1 on some of the premium movie channels or ppv. but the digital signal/connection should still light up the dolby indicator on the denon whereas the analog channels don't - even w/ prologic the digital sound is cleaner, better. & sat/dbs folk have the same problem not getting 5.1. it's the broadcasters(channels) that aren't putting it out in 5.1. get out your pitchfork & start protesting to them & go vikings
  19. hoping u meant a c-7 - better tonal match for the lascala. yea i'd set the rc to large.
  20. hey cheese, this should be simpler: -run the coax from the "digital audio out" or whatever it's called (not the audio out) -still have your input selector set to auto? -turn off all your other digital components (like the dvdp) -put the box on a digital tier channel (like Encore or somethin) Boa
  21. lp, are you talking the new rc-7 that's not out yet, or the klf c-7? ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  22. my understanding on the denon "5 channel stereo mode" is that it's great for a 2 channel analog (music) cd in that it's dsp doesn't add effects, reverb, etc. iow, the left front & rear & right front & rear speakers can get the same respective full range natural signals whereas only the center speaker signal is processed by the dsp for a matrixed blend of both the L&R signal, but still w/ no effects, reverb, etc (which may explain a louder center channel from a 5.1 source - not good). so it's an enhancement for 2 channel sources compared w/ my sorry sony model or others where the effects processors are not so bypassed in the circuitry (& I don't get the matrixed center either for ht, most want those dsp effects (delay, etc.) for their 5.1 (or more) channel movies. so when the auto function detects a DD 5.1 dvd & you have the mode set to "5 channel stereo" sure you'll get 5.1 different channel signals from your 5.1 different speakers, but u won't get the effects u might prefer from HT modes (not sure exactly what they're called on the denon, THX? Surround?). so, in short just use the "5 channel stereo" for two channel analog sources (like a CD). - 5 channel stereo w/ a CD is an enhancement - the same w/ a digital source like a dvd can be a disenhancement (unless of course u have added equipment), or, you're missing out on the effects - whichever way u want to look at it. oh & as some u guys said, u have to enable the dvdp for dolby & dts, or no auto function will detect a 5.1 channel signal that's not there. sorry for repeating anything you or I said, but baring schematic detail, is this generally a correct summary? hope so, caus it IS miller/bud time! (& looking at pictures of denons time) ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  23. cb, yea those cannon are more like a crack at first, but they're followed immediately by a low powerful rumble-percussion. that mix must really be missing the lower range considering your sub. you can get it direct from telarc: www.telarc.com/gscripts/search.asp?mscssid=M4AS0VNW28SR2KNP000CMP0LRU8N03X9&usrSearchBy=3&s=1812&q=cbk&submit.x=12&submit.y=7 ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  24. sorry quent, took it the wrong way w/ the quote & everything. see your point now. can't really blame the dealers though when they're given that kind of monopolistic power- hence higher prices & less availability. my (1 real) local dealer is actually pretty good w/ both though. hope that doesn't change.
  25. ch, if u haven't already, try angling the center down so the drivers point right at u. mine is 78" high so I had to put clip holders on the front of the cabinet top to hold it at such a severe angle.
