    DTS/THX??

mustang, right on, but what about 7.1? forget what they're calling that & wonder if there is much 7.1 source material?
  2. yea gil, a dolby prologic decoder works on any 2 channel encoded source to do what u say. what we w/ our 5 speakers & sub(lfe/.1) & dolby digital 5.1 & DTS decoders & transmission devices(set-top/dbs boxes) need is the source to be 5.1 channels. without that all were're getting is what u said - that prologic mix. anybody remember the quad craze back in the 70s? to get the 4 distinct channels u needed a quad receiver or decoder, a quad/4-channel album source & even a quad cartridge on the turntable. that may not be the best analogy, but we're missing the 5.1 channel album. but gil, some people may call their speaker set-ups 5.1, but 5.1 also refers to 6 channels encoded on the source material w/ the .1 being the lfe channel. dolby calls it dolby digital or " " 5.1. i think dts calls it dts digital surround. just semantics really. check out www.dolby.com or www.dtsonline.com for more info than we could possibly need now i wonder as phil said the FCC would require dolby digital w/ hdtv if they meant that or just dolby surround (dolby 2.0). dolby digital is 5.1 & I doubt the FCC even knows what that is. would be nice if so, but we also need to get out the pitchforks & lobby the cablecos, broadcasters, & movie producers. especially the broadcasters.

    avia disk

thanks todd. strange thing is it does do lfe on the start-up & certain other tests. ok overall disk but this really burns me on the phase test. all i can think they're thinking is that the fronts are wired thru the sub speaker level. but it's supposed to be a guide to HOME THEATER. absolutely ludicrous. wonder if they'll ever write back on it.
  4. after reading all these posts on this, i think it come down to 1 basic strategy: Klipsch developes & implements a uniform internet based system for the dealers to use to cover their areas. all or most dealers will not do this themselves to klipsch's liking. to think they will is sticking one's head in the sand.

    avia disk

thanks guys. steve, i'll try that & see if it plays both the fronts & sub simultaneous. i did send avia an email to ask them about it too.
  6. yea keith, i think it's what sounds best to the LISTENER - some say put it where the bass is tighter & others where there's more bass. those are two different things. w/ most it seems to be a real minute adjustment. some subs even have a variable phase dial. maybe that would be better. i thought u were just saying everybody should put it on 0. it bothers me that I have to invert my waves to 180 (which I know is silly), but I do get some more bass w/ a lil better edge to it. wish i could test it w/ my avia disk, but it doesn't work w/ my set-up. so i'd say put it where it seems to blend best w/ the mains for the LISTENER. rock on! p.s., I'm really limited on my sub placement - that's my big problem ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  7. trey, stop by kc & look @ my listening room. it's the damn fireplace - as my house was designed by "silver hairs" in '57, i have no other choice if your new refs sound as good as they say then maybe i can fit them upfront to better match the corn rears (for now). khorn fronts w/ corns in rear do fit into my future dream system & HOUSE ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  8. keith, reasons for a leave it on zero (for phase)? what if 180 sounds better?
  9. great point seb. how's the availability coming on that?
  10. w/ 7.1 channel processing or like which? ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  11. YES! YES! but i'd just settle for 1 high powered receiver that had 5 channel stereo. Boa "wish i knew then" H.

    avia disk

i went to use the avia guide to try to see if i could hear a dif in w/ the phase setting on my sub. but they don't put anything on the lfe channel. how are u suppose to test phase when they do this (i have my sub connected line to the sub preouts)? if i set the fronts to small then there's not enough bass from the fronts to compare. am i missing something or is avia just that ignorant? ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!

  14. never seen much reported on c-v subs, especially on this board if there subs are like their speaks though, then i'd say they're pretty average.
  15. bobg, doesn't klipsch even give u a per diem for bail money?
  16. bobg, i thought the new rsw subs would meet those requirements? well except for the low wattage anyway? high wattage is GOOD- high price not good. a_d_a_m (is that an acronym?), my vel hgs-18 is very low distortion w/ good low output below 15hz (which doesn't happen real frequently). & it has very low distortion - it has that accelometer(servo), but that clamps down on big bass outbursts like explosions. so w/ that tradeoff i don't get the disortion on like that chopper crash in the matrix, but i also am left longing for more impact at times like these. for those things thd is good - it sounds louder. but for music i have found no equal for the price (about $2.2k). the pitch definition & high output on the low bass is amazing. but it sounds like u more want the high ouput over extremely low thd, so u may want to check out those sv subs or wait for the new klipch rsw subs to come out & listen. wish i would have had that luxury in dec/99. ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  17. wonder cbear what you're doing w/ that extra ksp-6? yea mike 7.1 gives u another surround channel, but u can still use 2 speakers for the surrounds as well as 2 for rear for 6.1 w/ most so enabled receivers.
  18. phil, or maybe the new admin by being more pro free markets in all other areas of regulation will allow companies to meet the demand without the gov interference of rules of conduct, i.e., not restraining the companies that actually have the resources to do it.
  19. jhawk, yea can't wait for the big 12 tourney party in a few weeks here. which digital box do u have? no digital out & analog audio/video/s-video jacks? if not u may want to ask the cableco if u can get a box that has like the ScientificAtlanta Explorer. the digital out works great w/ my receiver for the digital channels. was even (once) able to get DD5.1 surround from Civil Acion w/ my 3-day free preview of the starz channel. go clones!(then KU) ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  20. i'd plug everything into the monster. that's what they recommend (is that the 1 w/ the color codes for each device?)
  21. kirath, about +6db gain if u hook to both the L&R using a Y. only - is if u don't like more bass
  22. oh & don't get me started -the ksw-15 is not a panacea for our HT receiver/sub incompatibilities - we'd still have the same problem w/ music cds. w/ it's dedicated nonfiltered lfe it's fine for dvd/lfe since the receiver's non-filtered lfe is low anyway & explosions sound better w/ more distortion. but it does filter low bass to the sub like on cds at a higher freq level than we would like (hence the boominess & need to adjust the sub cross down & unplug the lfe in). so again, the only solution is not using the sub preouts - using the main preouts or speaker level. or getting a better receiver klipsch & others must have designed their subs thinking we would have such features on our ht receivers. f.e., w/ the ksw-15 they were thinking hey ht receivers have a seperate lfe only preout. let's make an input on our sub for this. unfortunate for many their receivers have only a sub out that has another function for analog sources - it also sends filtered low bass to the sub out up to 120hz (usually not good for sub music bass reproduction). & so it goes...
  23. t-man, yea that's 1 good thing my sony does have. but it doesn't include the sub out crossover control. i think like doug's denon may have that. ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  24. if u listen only to CD music, u don't need anymore speaks, unless u have a 5 channel stereo mode on a receiver like on t-man's denon. the center is for HT or music dvds. some newer HT receivers also have virtual rear surrounds in addition to JD's phantom center. so i guess it's up to which receiver u have & if the added speakers cost is worth the marginal benefit for your limited HT use. ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  25. doug that sounds about exactly right. u get dueling filters when using both the sub preouts & the crossovers on the subs. that's why it's nice to have the crossover in/out switch on a sub. it would be even nicer to be able to control the crossover points on the receiver itself. no such luck w/ my sony but i've been eyeing those upper denon's that have that capability t-man, besides going thru the sub speaker level, that's the only true solution. if anyone has a better solution, i'd like to hear it. ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
