  1. Welcome We do not hear allot from KLF 10 owners. I never got a chance to audition them. I really liked listening to the KLF 20s I was exposed to.
  2. We ought to be nicer to Newbies. If we do not we become arrogant putzes; like Notre Dame graduates. Or fill in the blank with your least favorite University. I do too much polymer sceince meets plastic parts sceince stuff. I prefer the subjective in Audio discussions; a bit closed minded to enjoy many data points in my off time.
  3. Seb, It will take some time to sweat the details in your system to embrace the performance of fine tweaks. Add speaker placement and resonance elimination to those wire tweaks previously discussed. I would get a bit touchy if someone trashed my Audio Quest Coral between my DAC and preamp.
  4. Gil, Never thought of how to refer to this person. My little guy is Aaron James named after my Uncle Jim that helped me get summer jobs and taught me how to swim. He lived down the block from us. His only son was 16 years older than me. We spent allot of time together. Thanks for the prompt I need to start teaching him about his deceased great uncle. I am stumped at the terminology.
  5. Ray, Really stirring the pot on this one. My mother in law sleeps real well to my RB5s with a glass of White Zin right out of the box. She was so surprised to learn that they made a red Zinfindel from them there parts north of Horn Ed. The red Zin was a bit too full flavored for her; she is gonna stay with the White Zin; hates dropping those bottles on the floor as well. She does not have a Wave Radio; but my brother in law bought her a pair of Cerwin Vegas that he thought Def Leapard sounded good on. She whacks em pretty hard with the vacuum twice a week and they still play music. Those little cubes may not hold up as well as those Cerwin Vegas do to the old Hoover.
  6. I do not think Paul is dead. People are just anti horn. Magazines do not embrace Klipsch Polks are a pretty reasonable speaker. I have considered putting a cheap pair in the bedroom instead of RB 3 to save money.
  7. I remember it as Joni Mitchell You dont know what you ve got till its gone ... they paved paradise and put up a parking lot!
  8. I was wrong, it was a small weight difference between the Panasonic RP56 and RP91 not the Toshiba. SD 9200 23 pounds SD 4700 7 pounds
  9. It is hard to tell what Neil will do. At one time the Buffalo Springfield box set was supposed to have a DVD A; it ended out being issued as CD only. "Harvest" is supposed to be inprocess of being remastered DVD-A as discussed in an interview with Elliot Mazer in Listener. Elliot has Co produced or mastered some of Neils music. As far as the DVD goes... Does the RP 91 Panasonic have the "Sage/Faroudja" chip so it does not have the Chroma Bug? I tried to find solid confirmation of that on the web but was unsuccesful. Some comments I read stated that Toshiba manages the bug better than most. My wife decided(she gets to pick video; I get to pick audio) she liked the Toshiba 36 inch tube HDTV (36HFX71) so I thought I would go for the same company for progressive scan DVD thinking they would be designed for each other to some extent. The price difference between the SD 9200 and the SD4700 is hard to fathom since they weight only 2 pounds different.
  10. The Arcam was a consideration of mine until I bought Sherwood Newcastle separates. Beware of Sony power! Has been a thought of mine for more than a few years now.
  11. I was going to buy an entry level player like the Toshiba SD 4700. Finances got an unexpected lift this week and I was thinking about spending more than the $ 235 I was quoted for the SD 4700. The SD 9200 has had pretty good reviews but it may be more than the $ 700 I can budget. I am prefering to go the DVD A path instead of SACD since I am a huge Neil Young fan and he is solidly in suppor of the DVD A technology. All recommendations would be apreciated.
  12. As a student of the technical aspect of the selling process, a trainer told me... "the fear of change needs to be less than the fear of staying the same"; when people do not fear the purchase, they buy. Theroy is all decisions are emotional. That is why people change direction in their life I beleive. I really fear greed. Trying to make $ 200k a year is probably possible. But I could lose family, freinds and health in the process perhaps. Other peoples stories remind me that "persistence" is the common thread in success of various endeavors. Ray, May I suggest any book by Og Mandino. He is an old school kind of self help writer. His books are a short(never more than 200 pages) pick me up. He should be availiable in most every library. I would be more than happy to mail one out to you. Rick
  13. I have only heard the origonal I have had for 2 years. Agrreed I keep mine 2 feet from the back wall: I damn near always agree with Tony. I cannot expect the II would be a disapointment. Sara Mc Clachlan is whispering in my ear right now through my RB5s; it is reasonably stimulating.
  14. "110 watts per channel (8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, <.05%THD) 150 watts per channel (6 ohms, 1 kHz, <.7%THD)" This is from the Denon site. The first part of the statement sounds most of the way there; I would be more comfortable if it included the statement "all channels driven". The second part of the statement is the politically correct cop out in my opinion using just a 1 khz signal. My beastie power amp is a 75 pound Sherwood Newcastle AM-9080. It is described as 120 watts per channel, all channels driven 8 ohms from 20 hz to 20khz at less than 0.05 THD. 170 watts per channel, all channels driven 4 ohms from 20 hz to 20khz at less than 0.09 THD. The "1 khz signal" or "one chnnel driven" references make me a bit suspicious of marketing hype. I do not think it is a bad unit, I have 2 Denon 2 channel integrated amps in the house I like very much. 3802 tries to do everything; you have to be comfortable defining its liabilities whether they are related to power or other perormance isues.
  15. Deang and Horn ed, Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Ed, If you ever take the Winebago to Michigan to see the lakes I can put you in the front of the house(170 foot of driveway on 1.5 acres) and cook you dinner(wife uses the kitchen, I use the grill). I stay up late because I snore real bad and I let my wife get to sleep first; sometimes I need to do laundry or maintainance on the computers(washing machine, computer and audio all in a big family room). Challenges in life and music are a fine complement. I am geneticly predisposed to diabetes. Enjoy the diverse diet while I can. Was rear ended by a 30,000 pound truck 13 years ago. An angel told me to fasten my seat belt 20 minutes before so I got off easy with a bad back. No where near as severe as Horn Ed though. Lost a child; but have four healthy ones. While deer hunting with my dad(66 years old) last fall he said,"when I wake up in the morning I just figure every day is a bonus". Kind of a theme statement for me. No fear of the transition; just real comfortable with this life.
  16. Probably crushing them against my forehead once consumed aint helping much either. Hurts less than the Molson bottles... Agreed Sensible Sound does tend to shy away from tubes and oversimplifies their evaluation of amps and sources.
  17. I am using Radio Shack 12 gauge for the lows and AQ type 6+ for the highs. I can dissect the type 6 + to make it an internal bi wire cable but it was factory terminated, I have not decided to mess with it yet. I was convinced mid bass firmed up allot.
  18. Pretty funny... "The Last of the Mohicans" soundtrack is one of my wifes favoties. We used it when we audioned the RB5s we bought. The 60 hz limit on the sub is a bit of a liability. $ 200 would get the whole amp module I guess. You may be able to get a more flexible amp module from Parts Express or MCM Electronics and do it youself. I have not personnally used the CAT5 cable but everything I have read has been positive. With 4 kids and traveling 10-12 days per month on business, it does not leave allot of time for DIY stuff. I am not familiar at all with your interconnects. I used to spend allot of time in your neck of the woods, I still sell a little plastic to the Ford Utica plant. Where did you buy the B&K stuff? In the Detroit area?
  19. Let the games begin... 2.5 weeks ago I put an Audio Quest Coral between my MSB DAC and pre amp and for the fun of it I put a nice older pair of .5 meter AQ Jade interconnects between my Sherwood Newcastle Amp and preamp. Better sounstage and less ringing or shrill sound on the highs. Seemed to sound less "digital". The improvement was the real deal; no placebo. I recommend the Radio Shack cables for neophytes and the other rooms of the house. The number one rig in the house ought to get the good stuff!
  20. I read Sensible Sound(SS) primarily for the music reviews. I also read The Absolute Sound primarily for the music reviews. They are on opposite sides of the "Twilight Zone". And I am not sure Listener and Stereophile are in the middle either. SS reviews a $79 CD player; my buddie has a Linn CD player. It is darn near tricycles versus Ferraris. System tweaking and the associated educational process will take a lifetime. This is the best darn indoor hobby next to nooky!
  21. Mobile, I know I have taken a dark path. I have been having thoughts I should go all analog in the living room. LaScalas SET Rega Planar 25 with Grado Gold cartrige VPI record cleaner The record cleaner may put my wife over the edge. I have become very comfortable with her in the past 19 years, I do not want to push her too far. She kinda likes those little shiny disks. It will not be easy coming back to the Light.
  22. My favorite HIFI sales man Woody stated after I said I really liked my new AQ Coral interconnect, "it is not what the cable does to the sound , it is what the cable does not screw up in the signal". Woody is sharp! Owns Heresys, built his own Lowther cabinets, builds hiis own tube amps. Grew up repairing TVs as a boy at his dads shop in the early 60s. Good cables probably alter the signal less. Liabilities are in other areas. 1. Wire internall in the speaker. 2. Amp and speaker connections 3. Circuit board traces 4. poor quality solder 5. oxidation 6. Inconsistent or dirty electrical current.
  23. I had a real detailed post going a few days ago and lost my net connection. Boy that hacks me off. Great equipment selection! The Rotel CD player is cool I have listened to it. B&K has a great reputation although I have no place near to audition it. Short takes on set up 1. Start sub at 45 HZ and speakers at Large or Direct as you stated. 60 hz would overlap a bit with the RF3. 2. Buy a reasonable set of speaker wire; you have not skimped on the other stuff. 3. Adjust the distance to the rear wall betwen 1-2 feet. I use 2 feet for my RB5s. Toe in slightly towards sweet spot. You can listen for a while with speaker back parralell to the wall and then toe in to evaluate difference. 4. If you can locate the sub with your eyes closed it may need to be moved or lower the volume level. Room disctates allot. I am fighting pnuemonia right now(little tired) this post is not as insightful as the one that was lost. Let us know how you progress.
