  1. I think it's good to go into the audition somewhat blind to what others may believe to be the best combo. I think the one's I have sound incredible, yet I have been reading about x-over mods that can make them sound even better. The LS won't go as low as your Forte's, but that's a moot point with the sub. The LS will have a lot more presence than the Forte's and I think it is a "big" upgrade. I say "big" because of the sheer size of the speakers. IMO, I wouldn't care about the year as much as the condition and price. No matter what year, if it's a good price, I would ****** them up in a heartbeat. You won't be disappointed.
  2. IMO the $1100 for them is a lot, however since you won't have to pay shipping, it may be alright. But do give them an offer cause nothing speaks louder than cash. I bet you walk in with 8 crispy Franklin's, you will walk out with a pair of Cornwalls. Good luck.
  3. Make sure the "5" is not the letter "S". For instance, my '81 LaScala's are 27W841. Same type of numbering convention if indeed the "5" is an "S".
  4. Oh...the slippery slope of audio upgrades. Today it's speakers, tomorrow it's a receiver, the next you're into separates. Lot's here have been on that journey, me included. No more looking behind you, it's time to forge ahead. Good luck my friend.
  5. All this bike talk. Who's going to Daytona for Bike Week this year? I will be there Sunday, but them I'm heading to the Keys for Mon, Tues, and Wed to return to Daytona Thurs, Fri, Sat. Agree to start reasonable but don't start too small. Remember, we all didn't start in audio with a pair of Khorns, but Quintets would probably made me quit. Not all street bike's are the same too. The 750 engine on a racer may push 100+hp, but the 750 Honda Shadow pushes maybe 50. Besides, cruisers are a lot cooler than crotch rockets. Reminds me of that Robert Duvall movie where he's telling the story of the young and old bull on the hill.... Wear a helmet.
  6. I think she only has 1 out, so the choice is limited ! She is lead singer for The Peter Malik Group too, but her solo album is much better, IMO. It's available in SACD too.
  7. KG4'a are often on ebay. Why not another set of KG4's for the rear?
  8. tillmbil, My current 2-channel set-up is a Scott 299C running a pair of '69 Khorns type C. There are some pics of them in the Updating Older Speakers section. I replaced a set of '81 LaScalas with the Khorns not to long ago. I still have the LaScalas but they are just temporary in the theater rig until I get them sold. I will be putting my '87 Cornwalls back there after they go. I feel the Las are just to deep for the rest of the home theater. I hate to part with them because they do sound great but I only have so much room and it's either them or one of the kids. Here's a shot of one of them after refurb.
  9. Don't you just love palm tree decorations at Christmas? I'm just across the bay in St. Pete so I know what the weather was like yesterday. I drove the kids over to my mom's house on the mororcycle. Had to make 2 trips, but it was a beautiful day. Great pics. Looks like a nice day for you too.
  10. For you to be concerned with old technology is quite the statement . Will you be driving those new RFs with a 40 year old Scott amp?
  11. leok, How do the RF's compare to the Chorus II's? I always thought the Chorus was underrated too. The Chorus are very comparable to the Cornwalls, IMO. My intent was not to diss (if thats still a term) the RF's. I feel that the RF's are incredible speakers. I just enjoy the "live" sound that the Heritage produce. I have compared the RF's to the KLF30 side by side and I bought the 30's. It's that "live sound" thing. My salesman at Sound Advice was a huge Klipsch fan and loved the sound of the classic Klipsch over the RF's. The other salesmen preferred the Logan's or B&W's over the KLF's, but were a fan of the RF's. This example, at least to me, shows that the RF's have a totally different sonic signature than the KLF's. And to me, the KLF's are very close to the Sonics of the large Heritage models. If I were to buy new speakers today and had never heard the classic Klipsch, no doubt in my mind I would prefer the RF's over other comparably priced speakers.
  12. IMO, the RF7's can't hold a candle to Cornwalls or LaScala's. The sonic signature is very different. The KLF series comes close, but the RF's are a different breed. Some like it better, but it seems the majority here have the Heritage. If it were my $1K or better to spend, I'd stick with the Heritage.
  13. Bill, I will look into the full replacement value Monday. Kinda scary to think I would only get a couple of hundred dollars for my home theater amp and diddly squat for my Cornwalls or Scott 299C. Actually, the Scott wasn't even listed. I have nothing on my homeowners covering the bikes. I do have full coverage insurance, but nothing on the homeowners. Will definately give a call to the insurance guy tomorrow.
  14. If that's what insurance pay's, I'm getting better coverage. How much more is the "replacement costs" insurance?
  15. I think one of the factors that I hear a huge difference between my Khorns and Las is due to the different crossovers in each speaker. I have A's in the Khorns and AA in the Las. With the AA's the mids seemed more forward but the A's have a more laid back feel.
  16. Go to this link. BEC's site www.gumlog.com/tweeters/k77alnico.html It shows step by step how to replace the diaphrams. If I can do it, anyone can. I know you have different diaphrams, but the process will be similar.
  17. I used my 2095 as a pre for about a year with a Parasound 2205AT prior to picking up a B&K Ref30. It works well as a pre, but the B&K is much better. The extra wattage does bring perfomance up to the next level. I'm not talking about maximum db's, but quiet passages sound full(if that makes any sense).
  18. BigBusa, The timbre is very close between the Academy and the KLF. I also think the KLF30's are very close to the Cornwall's. There are slight differences, but nothing as big as the diff between the RF's and Heritage. I went over to Mike Lindsey's house a few years back with my KLF's and compared them to both his Chorus I & II's. Chorus has been favorably compared to Cornwall's by several members of this board, some even favoring them. The KLF series, although slightly(very slightly) thinner in the mids, were almost identical to the Chorus'. The timbre of the KLF & Academy are more similar than different. I currently have the Academy as my center because I sold my KLF to a friend. Personally, I would be happy with either one.
  19. Congrats on the CWII's. I also have a pair of oiled oak from '87. I used them with a KLF-C7 for about a year until I found an Academy. Not a huge diff between the Academy and the C7 so I wouldn't sweat the small stuff. You definately have some great speakers. Would love to hear them with that Jolida amp. I have never put my CW's on my Scott but with the Khorns there, I don't see the need to strain my back moving them.
  20. Darren, Although the DSP-A1 is a few years old, it was a "Flagship" receiver. You would have to spend some serious money to match what you currently have. The DSP-A1 is showing it's age with limited video in and out's, and no "new" (notice I didn't say better) audio formats, but it is still a very nice piece in and of itself. I have the same receiver in the bedroom system because I wanted something to support the multiple video formats in the theater. I currently own the B&K Ref30 and use a Parasound 2205 for power. I think separates would be the next logical progression if you're looking to upgrade. I have, or have had receivers from Denon, Yamaha, and HK, and have not heard a significant difference between any of them. They all sounded great with the Klipsch. When I moved into the B&K pre, there was a definate improvement in quality of sound and the Parasound was a huge improvement in the quantity of power.
  21. To be fair, when I watch a full screen movie on my wide screen tv, I only use 2.55 speakers!
  22. Stone them....Stone them all. If you don't throw a stone...You Are One Of Them!!! (Got to keep the Logans and Polks hidden) oops, Did I say that out loud?
  23. I bet the B&K beats the snot out of the broken Denon. I still enjoy my Ref30 on an almost daily basis. My kids did have levels all messed up the other day so I went back to the factory defaults and did it all over again but now the settings are stored and all I have to do is hit restore to bring them back. Congrats and happy listening for a long, long time.
  24. The way Scott's have been selling lately, I'll bet it closes close to $350. I saw a 299B go for well over $400 the other day.
