It is true, you're better off buying some used Klipsch or Infinity, something like that rather than keeping the CVs, unless you're really attached to them. I picked up some great condition (new foam, no dings, etc etc) Infinity RS5bs for 100 bucks. The key is to search diligently and jump when you see a good opportunity. I only have my CVs because I bought them with full intentions of modding them as a fun project....

I just picked up some CV PA speakers for a project and as far as the tweeter goes, yes. You would need to update/replace the tweeter crossover if you use a new tweeter, or at least I would to get the most out of them. The wrong crossover can ruin the way a tweeter sounds as well as possibly damage it if the crossover point is too low. I'm not sure about the woofers. Changing the tweeters makes sense, but the woofers not so much. The CV box is sized and tuned to the driver that is loaded in it and putting in a different woofer(s) again would not sound right and has a high chance of sounding pretty bad. If it were me, I would definitely replace the tweeters though. It would be well worth it until you can upgrade to some better speakers overall. Look around partsexpress.com for tweeters and crossover help. Their tech support is great and the more knowledgable members of this forum would probably be glad to help too. Good luck!

It's not like it's really noticeable from across the room, but when I'm trying to carry them (being 17, I definitely consider myself too macho for a handtruck [] LOL!) it gets right in your face. So come this weekend, Ima gonna try that. If I'm honest, they're old Cerwin Vegas (which never seem to be looked highly upon anywhere), but I bought them as project speakers, so it'll be good fun modding them (new crossovers, definitely new tweeters as time/money comes around, etc. etc.) and so now I'm just trying to clean them up... Naturally, that stuff is all over the 'bay. Full tube amps can be had for as little as 50 bucks direct from Hong Kong, 40 of which is shipping. That alone tells me to stay away. Plus, I really don't like buying stuff that is made in another country. It looks questionable to me..

Have not gone Blu-Ray yet. Don't want to. Do not watch movies enough to be worth the costs. Acutally have not got anything HD yet since I don't watch much tv either...

I just picked up a pair of some pretty old PA speakers (25 years or so) as a project and they're carpeted. And they smell bad. I've vacuumed them off and all, but they have that old speaker smell (actually kind of smells like cat pee) and I really want them cleaned but I don't know how to go about it. I have no idea if the carpet is latex backed or not or what have you, and my main concern would be damaging them if I tried washing them. Recarpeting isn't an option either. It's glued on pretty well, I would guess with contact cement, but I'm not sure. Any suggestions? Thanks!

And what makes it even better is that, for me, McIntosh is the ultimate and on those speakers, I can only imagine how good that sounds! That just twisted the knife a little more! Those sounded really good. They kept right up with the EV line arrays at the place. And considering the favorable review of the Growler, I can only image it sounds better. It looks to me like a good investment, but that's up to you. I hope this helps!

jc, I understand what you are saying, even if that was not directed at me. I must say that I really do appreciate you're efforts in spreading the word about this. I cannot say enough how much I wish I could be there. If there is ever another demo on a weekend, please be sure to let us know, and I'll definitely be there as long as my car isn't out of gas!

Since I've upgraded my stereo, I too have noticed that CDs I used to think sounded good really don't. And I'm not a fan of vinyls just because all I can ever find is classical, which I do not listen to... And I, being from the gereation you speak of, disagree, though not entirely. There are certainly well recorded CDs. You just have to hope you get lucky...Heck, I only run an ipod through my stereo, and it's not too bad since most of what I listen to is ripped lossless...the well recorded stuff actually still sounds really good IMO. And thanks for the warning about Robert Randolph. I've recently started listening to his stuff and picked up Unclassified first on a whim. It sound pretty good and was hoping to get the Color Blind CD, but may pass. And lastly, who's to blame? People my age who couldn't give a rat's a@@ about sound. I've been talking with a friend of mine off and on recently about him getting some new headphones (he's using $10 pink earbuds) and I've told him about some Shures like I use, and his response is something to the extent of "I don't needed anything that expensive, just something" and I just tell him he has no idea what he's missing out on... *sigh*

Whatever you want it to be/whatever you want to pay for. It really doesn't matter that much, unless you're real paranoid about neatness in which case shorter cables may be the way to go...

I would love to make it to that. And that place isn't too far from me and it's just down the road from my favorite Guitar Center, but it's a Tuesday so there's not a chance I would be able to make it. Ear, that's quite a pile of stuff you got there, but I must admit, as cool as that looks, I consider myself a Crown guy all the way...still, I can't imagine what your electricity bill would be if you ran all those at once!

Looks like that's going to turn out great, but is there any reason you can't just leave the grills on the speakers and not bother with a false wall? Yeah, sure, and RF-62 would be in the viewing area if used as a center channel, but if you just kept the RC...They'll be completely black and, in my thinking, difficult to notice in a dark theater with a movie going...just a thought.

I hate to hate on something someone else has spent their money on, but generally Pyle is not thought highly of, basically anywhere. Their stuff is known around the car audio world as being pyles of crap. So if you can get a Klipsch sub, by all means do so! I can certainly put money on it that it'll be better than your Pyle sub.

It seems to me that the growlers aren't so much mid-bass boxes as they are your average folded horn PA sub, none of which have much response below 40 hz to begin with...

And about the DD subs (since I don't want to get OT in the HT thread), you're right about them being for SPL, but I think you'd be surprised at how good they sound. I use one 1508 (8 inch) sub in my car running on about 600 watts and, even in the terrible box it's it, it still sounds pretty good to me. Besides, as we speak, I'm building a new box that doesn't use a 2" pvc pipe as the port (it chuffs at any volume level, I hate it) and should be a big improvement. I can also tell you that my little 8 is just as loud, and much much cleaner sounding than the crap most people my age (17) are buying from the big box electronics stores. I had to pay a good bit for it, but it was completely worth it.

Of course I'm looking for one! Though I certainly don't have the cash for an XXX. But I'm definitely looking towards a CSS SDX or some Dayton sub. I happen to like Dayton a lot. The DVC 15 is great, especially for the price. Already built a big HT box with one and might get another to go sealed with for myself. At the least, I certainly hope to, unless I can end up with a better driver for a good price still, though I guess good price is realtive...

That's right Ear, NO subwoofer, but I plan on getting one in one of these days. I'm thinking a 15" Titanic would suit me, or maybe some Digital Designs woofer, I'm not sure yet...
