  1. First yes, a tube pre-amp will help in talking the harshness out. Second most newer cd's output is about 2volts rms from the analog outputs. I use a tube stage buffer in front of my pre-amp in my SS rig makes quite a difference.
  2. Can anyone tell me what kind of sound difference these two tubes make? JJ-ECC 803s JJ-ECC 81
  3. Erik, Do you have any comment on the Orchid by antique sound labs? I would like your opinion if you have one. Jay
  4. Jazman, that makes two i will be checking into thanks for your opinion. Jay
  5. Daddy Dee, the review on the orchid was very inspiring to say the least. I will be calling about that one for sure, thanks. Jay
  6. Daddy Dee, That orchid does not look to bad, it's worth further investigation. Any advise on where to look for some reviews on it?
  7. That's quite alright Craig, we'll just keep looking. Jay
  8. Greg that one is a pentode. Looking for a triode if at all possible. Jay
  9. That's alright Greg, only if you can come up with the goods LOL. Jay
  10. Hello guys, I am looking at getting a SET intergrated amp, can someone make some recomendations in the $1500.00 range thanks.
  11. I have a vintage Marantz setup which in my opinion sounds really good with my k-horns, but when I hooked up my HH Scott 299 there was a very noticeable difference. My Scott is going to Craig for a freshing, and in the mean time what I did was to hook up a tube line stage in front of my pre-amp. It's very close to the best of both worlds, it has a tuby effect and the dynamics of SS. I am more than happy with this temporay setup. Jay
  12. Bill, I just took my tube amp out of my system for a freshing; which means back in goes the Marantz. Now as far as comparing the differences, there are lots of that. Which one sounds better, they both sound really good. I think they both have thier own world. Now with k-horns I feel that the tube sound is a nice step up from SS. The SS with k-horns is really in your face kind of music, it sounds a little jamed together, does not seam to have the seperation that tubes do. With my HPM 1500's the SS is the only way to go, they are power hungry and require alot of watts. The louder you turn them the better they sound, not the case with the tubes and k-horns. It's all in what you like, and we are all a little different and hear a little different; so everyone is going to have an opinion. Is it right or wrong you have to decide that for yourself. Jay
  13. Bill, I am sorry I did not get back to you sooner. My problem was I had tried to put a line tube stage in between my pre-amp and my amp. No good created a 60hz. hum, put the line stage where it belongs and no more hum, dead quiet. I once had a 60hz. hum being caused by a ground problem, I installed a two prong adaptor on the three prong plug and the hum disapeared. Jay
  14. For all those who care Daylight Savings Time in the central time zone starts this coming Saturday night @ 2:00 am. You must move your clocks ahead one hour.
  15. Thanks Bill, I have already located and fixed the problem. Jay
  16. Last night I hooked up my Marantz 300 dc only to find a hum, without any volume on the pre-amp and without any source the hum is still there. Also when I turn off the pre-amp the hum gets louder, any suggestions on what is causing the hum?
  17. Yes, I agree with Craig on where the sound seams to be coming from. I grabed a little scott 299 a few weeks ago and the sound is really sweet from the big horns. It sounds like it is coming from in between the speakers instead of out of them.
  18. Yes, I am listening right now and will be for quite a while. I just got back in town from work and miss the music very much.
  19. Ran across this earlier. http://shu-ks.com/zakki/0aoyagitei.html
  20. Greg if i choose to go that way i will be calling on you for help and advise, i hope you don't mind. Jay
  21. Yes you are right about that. Further investigation for sure. Greg i forgot i have one other option to way. I can always go with seperates and use my Marantz SS for the bass if i want to get a little complex. I was trying to keep it simple if at all possible. But as you know this hobby of ours is a little crazy at times. Jay
