  1. If you are gonig to rebuild your risers might I suggest making them filled with sand or lead shot to minimize enclosure vibration.
  2. Next to "Bottle Rocket" this is by far the weakest of Wes Andersons creations. Life Aquatic just feels to slow and patched together when compared to Tenenbaums and Rushmore. Andersons films always have had a different feel about them, dry humor coupled with quirky characters are a staple of his flims. There is a reason why Criterion chose Tenenbaums as a release, it is an amazing film. Watch Tenenbaums a few times and notice how well crafted every single aspect is.
  3. If the above offer falls through I would like a chance at it to be used at a center channel speaker. I am driving up to the bay area in the next week or so and could pick it up then. scunion at ixqp .com Thanks
  4. Leo Kottke - Peculiaroso / Acoustic Guitar (Blues / Jazz) / CD This is my first exposure to Leo Kottke and it is a positive one. Reasonable recording that conveys the warm and thick sounds of an acoustic guitar. Listen to a few tracks here - Peg Leg is one of my favorites http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000000LC/102-5136649-6382566?v=glance&n=5174
  5. They are 13"x"30"16 or 3.6 cubic feet per. Have fun down in T.J.! Cardiff is a nice place to be, I am less than 10 miles from there in Carlsbad.
  6. San Diego, bit far from where you are right now. Lowest I would go on the AT-12s would be $225.00. Cabinets are in 9/10 shape (got them from the orignal owner), drivers are mint ribbed (not nippled) pulp with brand new CV surrounds (roughly a $80.00 job at any repair shop). Drivers, crossovers and teriminals have have been lightly sealed (not visible all interior) with silicone. About to put them up on ebay (had them on craigslist) if you are interested please do let me know (screen name here is same as ebay). Shipping would be around $125.00 by my guesstimate. http://sandiego.craigslist.org/ele/162539410.html http://sandiego.craigslist.org/ele/162548778.html
  7. For $400 you could slide into some Fortes, just saw a pair go for a bit over $400 in the bay area on ebay. I bought my Chorus for $500 abliet the enclosure veneer was beat up in many places. Herseys are an option, I personally would not settle for a two way klipsh design. Vegas are still reasonable speakers, I just recently restored a pair of Circa 1992 AT-12s and a pair of 1985 DX-3s. Just need to sell them now and I will be a happy camper.
  8. Just getting to know the whole Klipsch line and even though the Klipsch literature says the Academy is made for the "2s" (Forte 2, Chorus 2) it employs an exponential horn. I believe it is the only Klipsch branded center that utlizes an exponential and is highly sought after becuase it mates with the timbre (all exponential) of the heritage series. I could be wrong though =o So what do heritage HT users normally use for a magnetically shielded center channel?
  9. Glad someone here thinks a musical sub is mandatory with these Chorus! Price range is going to be in the $500.00 or less range. Space is not that much of an issue so I might just go with a DIY deal as I have built and tuned a good many car sub enclosures. Thinking of a sonotube enclosure as it can be take up a small foot print but still have a large volume (vertically that is). I do have a person that can hook me up with SpeakerCraft or Sunfire subs. Pretty sure even with the discount the Sunfire is going to be way out of my range. Biggest problem is matching the output of the Chorus since they are so damn effcient (and have considerably more piston area), my 12" HSU sonotube sub is drowned out by the Chorus low end.
  10. For about $30.00 you could get some tools, glue and acryllic sheeting and make an awesome cover. Just do a google search for working with acryllic, it is really easy stuff to work with if you make squarish objects out of it.
  11. Have not done a RTA sweep in quite a few years as my 2 channel audio setup has not changed at all. I do put a good amount of trust behind what ears are hearing though. Good idea to borrow a friends RTA and do a sweep though. AR strived for a very flat and neutral response with their designs, the AR9 is no exception. Four 11" AR woofers are in an active push pull (think active passive radiator) largish sealed enclosure. They mate with an 8" midbass driver at 200 Hz which in turn mates with a 2.5" dome midrange at around 2-3k I think. The issue is that the ARs just plainly reach lower due to the design and enclosure. I am used to hearing lower frequency range and the Klipsch just don't deliver in this respect. Other than the previous complaint about the Chorus I do enjoy listening to them. I just figured that other Klipsch users would have noted the "missing octave" and done something to fill the so called octave gap.
  12. Chorus -3 dB down point is 45 Hz, least that is what the Klipsch literature tells me. In addition the Chorus is a ported 3rd order enclosure which means it drops off steeply (18-24 dB per octave) as opposed to a sealed enclosure (12 dB / octave) I am a firm believer that the octave (20-40 Hz) above infrasound (threshold where most people are unable to hear, sub 17 Hz) does impart quite a bit to the quality of any music. +/- 3 dB is roughly half the precieved loudness For a good test check out this page. Use sealed headphones (if you don't have a pair might I suggest Sony MDR-V6 as a great entry level can) and play these tones: http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/~jw/hearing.html 60 Hz @ 0 dB 45 Hz @ -3 dB 30 Hz @ -24 dB I hear the 30 Hz tone (at -24 dB) but when that is played along side the 60-500 Hz range (at or around 0 dB) that the Chorus woofer plays at, it is very hard to discern the 30 Hz tones due to the very low level they are played at. There is quite a bit of music that reaches in to the 17-50 Hz range. Organs and Pianos lowest notes are 16 Hz and 24 Hz repsectively. The tracks I was using to the A-B testing were off of Becks - Sea of Change CD. Speaker placement was toed in and they were both within one to two feet from side walls. Flannj thanks for the advice, does it seem to add any coloration (i.e. not complementary sounding) to the already very dry sound (I assume the Chorus enclosure has low Qtc, that is what is sounds like) of the Chorus bass?
  13. Found a seller for some reasonable quality (few chips and dings) Chorus speakers this weekend and snapped them up for $450.00. After spending a good amount of time listening to them over the past few days I am pleased by the overall sound and listening experience. I knew there was a definite lack of low end but this did not really hinder the listening enjoyment. I was really amazed at the dynamics (transient response i.e. attack) of the low end considering the woofer is in a third order enclosure. I did some A-B testing with my Acoustic Research 9s (-3 db @ 28 Hz) today and came away amazed at how much subsonic sound was not being reproduced by the Klipsch. After doing the A-B test I dragged my HT HSU sub (12" driver) in the room and proceeded to listen to it with the Chorus in tandem. Having the subwoofer helped but the low end a bit but the low end still was lacking output. Not ever having used a subwoofer in two channel listening I come here to ask the Heritage owners about what subwoofers they use or suggest to solve 25-50 Hz gap?
  14. Echoing of some statements above Looking Glass Studios (defunct now) Thief 1-2 Deus Ex 1 (did not get to try 2) System Shock 1-2 Ubisoft System Shock series Beyond Good and Evil (one of my favorite games) Blizzard Warcraft RTS series Starcraft Diablo 1-2 World of Warcraft (fun but end game sucks IMO) id Quake 1-3 (multiplayer games) Monolith No One Lives Forever 1-2 Epic Unreal Tournament 99' Unreal Tournament 2004 Sony Online Planetside (free for low level ranks, Massively Multiplayer FPS) Valve Half-Life 1-2 Relic Homeworld 1-2 Dawn of War
  15. Beck / Sea of Change / Slow and easy listening - Rock / CD I personally love all of Becks work except the first CD he released. Each release he has made comes equipped with a new musical style or format, Sea of Change continues with this trend. The tempo of this CD is very slow when compared to any of Becks other offerings.
  16. Without consulting my watched movie data base here are a few suggestions. Bridge over the River Kwai The Great Escape Barry Lyndon - best viewed on a RP or CRT T.V. due to black levels 2001 A Space Odessey Dr Strangelove Manchurian Canidate (the original) One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest North By Northwest Lawrence of Arabia Das Boot Ladri di biciclette
  17. Another vote for: Roy Orbison - A Black & White Night (DTS) (1988) And probably one of the best overall bands to come out of the 80's (IMHO) Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense (1984) (DD 5.1)
  18. Pinback - Summer in Abaddon - Rock (mellow) - CD Still a relatively new release but I have been following this band ever before their first release (bassist used to be a member of 3 mile pilot). Sample a few tunes off of amazon.com, check out tracks 1, 3 and 8. "Abaddon" is better than the first CD "Pinback" but nearly as good as the second release "Blue Screen Life" IMO.
  19. After recently refoaming (re-eding) my fathers AR-9s, a pair of Cerwin Vega AT-12s (craigslist specials) and my current Infinity Reference One speakers, I have caught the home audio bug again. Previous to catching this bug I was infected with a good case of headphonitis, which I still battle with today I had a pair of KG 4.2 for a good amount of time and really liked them compared to my Infinity Reference One. Sadly I sold the KGs due to space issues at the time but alas those space issues are gone now and I am looking to move up the Klipsch audio ladder to some Forte 2 or Chorus 2. Just recently I was going to audition (and possibly buy) a pair of Chorus 2 locally but they slipped through my fingers due to a sellers issue (roommate sold them when he was away). Craigslist and Audiogon have turned up nothnig locally over the past weeks so I chose to post here. So I am back on the Klipsch hunt and was wondering if some kind Klipsch owner is willing to part with the models above or even merely give a total stranger a listen to his or her home audio (Klipsch that is) setup? Thanks in advance Mark
