  1. One way: If you have not "final finishing sanded" with say, 600 grit; you can use 240 or 320 with an orbital and slowly but surely bring it back down, but you will need to do another 400 grit and if you are using a sprayer, shoot another coat. Otherwise, you can thin the laquer with say, 10% laquer thinner, and re-apply. The "smoothing out to perfection" will be 600, 800, and if you can find them, 1200 grit pads. For shooting with a gun, the actual problem is usually traced to the line pressure from the compressor, the nozzle size, and the type of gun used. See if you can find a "HVLP" high volume, low pressure gun, like a DeVilbiss FL-3 finishing gun and use a 1.3 mm nozzle; shoot some laquer thinner through it first (about a 1/2 ounce) on a scrap piece of plywood to make sure the pattern is ok, then fill the cup and go for it. Check the compressor settings and make sure they are set to the gun requirements; and make sure you drain the compressor tank before a new shooting by opening the bottom drain cock valve to make sure any moisture is out. Also, see if you can find a "dryer" fitting for your compressor to keep any moisture out. Water can cause (and will with laquer) "clumps" and the resultant "runs". If you can, try to shoot with the object "horizontal" to minimize clumps and runs. Check with someone at an autobody shop that you trust, and see if they will shoot the final coat for you. It may cost you half a case of Sam Adams, etc., but they do it all the time. Hope that helps.
  2. I'm glad mas said something about the cat forum... I talk this stuff over with my cat too; he tries to steal my Sam Adams, but generally without success... Maybe these cats somehow communicate.... In any event, if you absolutely have to have the "original" jacks, I have a pair of old Heresy-II cups with the jacks (crossovers were removed and mounted on a board by Bob Crites) that I will probably never use. You are welcome to them. That being said, make sure you follow Kriton's advice and instructions re: solder vs the plastic.... Lemme' know by email if you want them.

  5. Quick note: driver board will be black OPEX laquer primer like from factory. Rear panel will also be OPEX'd. Reason; grills are black (WAF again...). Gotta compromise.... I have a really, really nice pair of brown grills, but really need another pair to match..... Anybody have a brown pair to swap for a black pair?
  6. Next Stage, Part-2: Final "fungus" removal; final fungus used was "plastic wood"; I have found that it really works better in the small holes, especially thinned about 10% with some acetone. Final sanding is with 220 grit; first stain will be very fast and wiped to get a feel for how fast the wood takes the cherry wood stain. Then a 320, another really fast stain, then see how it looks (call my wife to look and keep my fingers crossed...); then another if she says too light, if not, final 400 and then clear #40 sheen laquer; maybe a 600 "polish" run; don't know yet.
  7. Next Stage: 120 grit to remove putty fungus; still some small gaps in the plys; I've really learned a lesson here; spend the extra money and get picky and irate when they wheel out a sheet..... Then take it back when it shows up these ply gaps....
  8. It's on the way; see EM sent earlier with track number.
  9. Up to about 140 on the combined list; there are possible duplicates, etc. Question? Since it's beginning to slow down (except for those pesky glitches that keep "popping" up), should there be a review of what everyone has posted and forum members do a "final" vote , say, over the weekend? Possible Categories: Overall Best; Best Bass Response; Best "presence"; Best "Thwack" Potential; Best Price For What You Get; Best Appearance; Ugliest; Strangest; Others? 10. Just figure that 2 x Sam Adams = 1/2 Big Mac..... So ask yourself the question: 4 nice ice cold Sam Adams, good tunes[8], fine nickel "ceegar"[G]; or... Big Mac[+o(], order of fries[^o)], big coke with extra sugar[st]...., and that bloated, can't do nothing but take a nap feeling.... KLIPSCH SURGEON GENERAL WARNING: Do not substitute a fine beer for food at work[6].... They will not appreciate your math, sense of humor, or any snappy comebacks, regardless of whether they truly deserved them or not......[]
  11. Look at www.esotericsound.com Forget the Cedar stuff unless you are "independently well off, and of considerable means". Look at, particularly, the Surface Noise Reducer" unit. I latched onto one relatively cheaply about a year ago, and it does just what it's supposed to do. Very sexy, very efficient. I use their ESSC's as well in a cascade system to be able to redirect all of the multiple audio sources (tape deck, tape deck, CD, SACD, DAC, DTV, DVD) into the pre-amps without multiple switching problems.
  12. Thanks for the email; the K-77-M will leave tomorrow. Let us know how it sounds vs the CT-125; I have a pair of LS's and eventually may want to look at the options and use their original 77's for some other project.
  13. Beautiful!!!! Eventually I hope to be able to do something like that!!! Looks like the wood just grew that way....!!! I'm seriously considering edgebanding them if I stain them though. I also saved one full sheet of veneer with some fairly good, but not aggressive, matching patterns and may do the top panel and the bottom panel to match the edgebanding; then stain them like HCO (Cherry veneer).
  14. I'm slowly but surely building up a supply of H series drivers, and when I have what I need, i'm going to make a pair of "custom" Heresy cabinets with different construction methods, and appearance changes (why not!.. wood's cheap, the moment is priceless...).
  15. Running List Update for 30 October 2006; I've also numbered them. At the end of today, I'll go back to the thread and extract the next batch for tomorrow. Excuse typo's, incorrect identification, etc. If I've made a mistake, left something out, etc., correct me (include the number); it's on an excel database, easy to correct and re-sort. Maybe at the end of this thread (if there will ever be an end...), everyone can "vote" for 10 by the numbers and see what the "community" thinks as a whole? Maybe vote for several categories (besides, how can you not "luv" the electronluv for some category?!!!) 1 Acoustic Energy AE1 MkIII's 2 Advantegarde Trios 3 AE1 4 Allison Ones 5 Altec 19 6 Altec AlNiCo 604 7 Altec Voice of the Theatre 8 ATC SCM 50 9 Avalon Eidolon Diamond 10 Avantegarde Trio 11 Avantgarde Duo 12 B&W 801 13 B&W 802D 14 B&W N800 15 B&W Nautilus 16 Bard by Loth_x 17 BB5/XBD stacked array 18 BBC LS3/5a 19 Bonneville 650s 20 Bose 901 21 Bosendorfer AC7E 22 Bozak Concert Grand 23 Dahlquist DQ_10s 24 DL_15/Bs 25 Duntechs 26 Dynaco A25 27 Dynacos 28 Dynaudio C4 29 Dynaudio Conyour S 5.4's 30 Dynaudio Evidence Master 31 Dynaudio Master 32 Dynaudio Temptation 33 Dynaudio's Evidence Temptation 34 Edgarhorn Titan 35 electronluv 36 Eliptica 37 ESS AMT 38 Final Sound_1000_i 39 Gallo Reference 3's 40 Genesis Technologies II.5 41 Grand Monument Reference 42 Grand SLAMM X1's 43 Gryphon Technologies Poseidon 44 Harbeth Monitor 40 45 innersound2 46 JBL 4311 47 JBL 4312 48 JBL 4313 49 JBL 4350 50 JBL 4430/ 4435 51 JBL Everest 52 JBL K2 53 JBL L100 54 JBL L166 55 JBL L200 56 JBL L_7 57 JBL4535 58 JM Lab Focal Grande Utopia 59 KEF 105 60 KEF B139 woofers 61 Kharma Grande Ceramique 62 Kharma Reference 1A 63 KL_650 64 Klipsch Cornwall 65 Klipsch Cornwall 66 Klipsch Heresy 67 Klipsch LaScala 68 Klipsch RB5 69 Klipsch RF_7 70 Klipschorn 71 Klipschorn 60th Anniversary 72 Large Advent Loudspeaker 73 Legacy Whisper 74 Living Voice Airscout 75 Loth_X Audio Amaze 76 Loth_z Amaze 77 M&K S150 satellite 78 Magnaplanar 20.1 79 Magnepan MG20.1 80 Magnepan MGLR1 81 Martin Logan Summit 82 Martin Logan Summits 83 Martin Logan Vantage 84 Martin Logans (aerius) 85 mbl 101D Radialstrahler 86 McIntosh_XRT2K_3 87 Meridian DSP8000 88 Midi_Grand_Ceramique GRCe_M_0, 89 Nearfield Pipedreams 90 NHT 91 Oheocha D2 Saturn 92 Opera Audio Consonance M12 Barque 93 Quad "57" electrostatics (I finally have acquired a pair of these) 94 Quintessence Acoustics Stealth 95 R312's Cerwin Vega 96 Reference R909 97 Revel Salon2's 98 Rockport Technologies Hyperion 99 Sonus Faber Amati Homage anniversario 100 Sound Fusion Hyperion 101 Stradivari Homage 102 Summit 103 SuperCustom19k 104 Tannoy Westminister 105 The Infinite Wisdom Grande 106 The Meridian DSP8000 107 Thiel CS3.7 108 Thiel CS7Bowers & Wilkins 800 Signature 109 Totem 110 Totem Arro 111 Triangle 112 Veritas V2.4i 113 VOTT 114 Wharfedale 115 Wharfedale W_70 116 Wisdom Alexandria X2 117 Wisdom Audio Sophia 118 Wisdom Grand SLAMM X1's 119 Wisdom WITT 120 Zephyr 121 Zu Definition

  17. Also "poor" quality source recordings can be a problem; sometimes the recording is "biased", or was not balanced when made. I've noticed this on a number of poorer quality LP's and CD's. It shows up on the TASCAM unit all the time, and also on the 10" AKAI pro unit I had as well awhile ago. I fiddled around with a leveler once with a turntable and then adjusted the tracking, etc., but simply could not overcome either the left or right level being higher than the other without correcting during the recording. I also tried "flipping" the stereo "reverse" switch on my AU-999 one day and voila', crappy from the left was now crappy on the right.
  18. Agreed; a couple years ago I got tired of fiddlin' with the old spark plug wires off the pick-up truck in the back yard (one in the front yard on cinder blocks is a classic so's I won't touch that one...) and bought two pairs of RS "gold plated"; they were almost impossible to get on/off without risking yanking the wires out... needle nose time... Finally junked them for some 99 cent a pair specials off eBay. No problems yet.
  19. Just some photos of the two pairs of Heresy-I HBR's restoration project that I started months ago. The original panels were a mess and the glue had completely dried; bad chipping, ply separation, and weird staining by the original owners. I had numerous problems with the new birch plywood sheets. Although allegedly "furniture grade" birch, the initial sheets had so many problems with poor finish, I ended up going to another source for the wood, and throwing at least one complete 4'x8' sheet away. Even the new sheets are a little "hairy". Furniture grade is allegedly at least a smooth 150 "grit" texture; but the best sheet I got is maybe 120 and has "cheek fuzz". The wood, although the photos don't show it yet, do have good patterns, and the wood for the rear panels has some very unusual matching "cat's eyes". Once they are finished, and BB'd, stained, and then Watco'd, or tung'd, they will show these unique patterns Also in the pictures, you can see that I had problems with blade "burning", (using a very good 120T blade with a Dewalt 746??), but very light sanding removes that (tested). We believe it's related to the humidity here. Second problem was the wood warping about after being cut(?). Again, humidity is the likely culprit. Solved that by cutting and then placing the replacement panels in the oven at 160 degrees, sandwiched between two scrap panels with dive weights on the top... for about 2 hours, then in the garage "high and dry" for about a week. During the measurements and disassembly of the old, we measured the braces exactly as the factory braces, but they just did not fit tight. Rather than just "dolloping" glue or filler in the joints (like they were...), I cut exact "wedges" or slices, some of which were only 1/64" thick. But once installed, and the seams sealed with glue from the rear, the cabinet will be properly airtight. The original HBR's had 5 finishing nails, top and bottom, along the side panels. The nails were recessed and filled. If you look at an old pair of HBR's you can see these nails. Rather than filling with putty, etc., I cut and contact cemented small dowels from birch toothpicks (yes, "designer" birch toothpicks!!). That's why they look like "pinhead" from some old scfi/ horror movie. They will be cut and only a very small amount (hopefully almost undetectable...) amount of stainable birch filler putty will be required. The filler on the edges (looks like fungus) is for those pesky little gaps in the plywood layers. They just don't make furniture grade plywood like they used to... The correct factory spec OPEX/ Valspar primer, the factory spec #40 sheen SSG laquer is in, but I'm still waiting (for over three months) for the #40 sheen clear. Cannot understand why a major paint company local distributor cannot obtain simple clear production laquer.. So I went in a couple days ago and ended up having some "words" with the manager. It started with a simple, "Has the birch putty I ordered two months ago come in yet?". It just degenerated from there, and it end up with the, "She's in charge, not the ex-employee who was helping me, and that what's in the store is all that's available unless I want a large (55 gallon...) quantity, and she does not have time for "small" special orders" crap. So I drove 90 miles round trip to the Home Depot for the filler.... Oh well..., gotta call OPEX in North Carolina on Monday and go from there. Even the veneered Klipsch have that clear coat of #40 laquer to protect them.. In any event, as soon as the sanding is done, I'll post some "pitchers", and everyone interested can tell me to (a) leave them as "nekkid" BR's, ( go for the BB finish (original plan), © or a nice cherrywood (or something) stain. My wife (Wife Acceptance Factor...) is heavily leaning towards the stain.....
