  1. And if you see something on Audiogon, or if you need to ask about a particular amp, you could always ask us here. You may get more opinions than you care for, but someone here will have a good idea about whether a particular model is good or not. Audiogon is generally a safe bet. Beware of other sites with audio gear, particularly if that amp just happens to be located at their Indonesian branch office! Paul
  2. Thankfully, my wife and I both like the same music. I think the only problem I may have is armwrestling my son, Me Loves Heresy's, out of these Cornwalls. That would be fine if he wanted to trade. Those Heresy's sound just incredible. At least my 3 little dudes: 5,7,7 years old, are not quite wanting speakers of their own. Won't be long though. And dtel, how are your Cornwalls coming along?[] Paul
  3. OK, I just called my wife. She has claimed them for the den, and seems extremely excited about her having some Klipsch's. I sent you over info via email, Paul
  4. I am interested it the Cornwalls. Can you give more info on the AR 3a's. I will pm you with more details. Paul
  5. An easy way to think of it is: Preamp or processor: The brains of the operation. It takes the signal provided by the source: cd, dvd, record, ipod, fm, etc. It then lets you control the volume, balance, tone controls, treble, bass, etc. It sends out a signal of low power. to the amp. Amp: the muscles of the deal. It powers up the signal from above and sends it to the speakers. Reciever or integrated: has both of the above in one unit. More convienent and less costly usually. A lot of these work and sound great. Seperates: the above in 2 units. Many argue that this may sound better, but is more costly and more set up. Audio nuts and "snobs" may insist this is the only way to go, but an integrated can give wonderful sound also. Modern AV recievers are an integrated with the ability to decode and amplify numerous channels, usually 5-7, in one box. They have the brains and the power amps in one unit. These are the most convienent way to use surround sound, movies, etc. Can also be used to listen to stereo music. These are solid state and not tubes. The other stuff can be tubes or solid state. Paul
  6. It actually has a small nuclear generator which helps the disc brakes. There is some concern with the nuclear stuff being so near to the seat itself, but hey, it stops on a dime. It is made of a gold and platinum alloy, which though costly , gives a good deal of mass, which is helpfull when trying to go really fast. Leather seats, of course. Cost: about what a good audio set up would cost.
  7. OT, but are you more than slightly giddy that Ernesto took a right hand turn? Paul
  8. So who makes the ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ bike? Paul
  9. A little bit ago, my wife was reading over my shoulder. She said it was obvious that many of us become about as obsessed and "into" the nuances of bikes about like we do speakers. I said, well yeah.. Going out and just picking up a bike from WalMart would be about the same as going out and getting some Bose's from Worst Buy. Wait a minute, I've done both of those things in the past...[] Well, not anymore. Only good bikes, horns, and tubes for me baby!![] Paul
  10. Another good option is to look into getting a used integrated tube amp from the 60's or so. Some of them have been worked over, have new tubes in them, sound great. Not a ton of money, you can test and see if you like it. I know that Craig at NOSValves can either hook you up or lead you in the right direction. He leaves frequent posts here and you can link to his website. I recently bought a used Dynaco amp for 550, it sounds great. Got from someone here on the forum. That may be another option, wait until someone here wants to sell some gear. Good luck, Paul
  11. I recently got a tube amp, a used Dynaco, not a ton of money, bought it from a forum member. The difference in sound that it made was incredible. Klipsch speakers just love horns. Unfortunately, my preamp does not have a phono preamp with it. I am going to have to get one to hook up my TT with my tubes. I bet they will sound even better then. If you live in an area where there are other forum members, you might could bribe one of them to let you borrow for a few days a tube amp and plug it into your system. Or they could possibly let you hear their tube and TT set up. But, beware: I heard my Klipschhorns for the first time with tubes in Hope. I have now started on a rather expensive renovation of gear after hearing the difference. Paul
  12. It's nice that you have a dedicated room. My surround sound and 2 channel are all in one space. Works ok I guess. Would like to go the projector route, but the room would be next to impossible to get dark enough to use one... Paul
  13. I too am getting some noise. Seems to mainly be coming from my back speakers when it is in surround mode. When the preamp is set to stereo, it goes away. Does not seem to have the hum in the front or center. Do you think this thing would help, and if so, do you just place this in line as the cable comes from the wall to the system? I have a surge protector in line also. Would this go on the wall side or the cable box side of the surge protector? Paul
  14. Nice set up. Are you into 4 wheel drives also? Paul
  15. My wife and I just went and test rode (drove?) the Cannondale Synergy bikes. They were really nice. Has anywone used or seen those? Paul
  16. Yeah, were not crotchity or catty. We just happen to be right almost all of the time. It is really a burden to bear, if they only knew... Paul
  17. We have a shop here that used to carry Klipsch and other higher end brands years ago. Even used to carry McIntosh. Now, they carry plasma, lcd, dlp, etc. All they seem to sell is mainly tv's. They have a few small speakers, nothing spectacular. And my wife summed it up recently: I used to enjoy going to Best Buy, Circuit City, etc a long time ago, especially when we lived in an even smaller town without those. Now, there is basically nothing audio that they even carry that is interesting to me. Now, some of the newest big screens are pretty cool...[] Paul, hopelessly hooked on horns, tubes, and macs
  18. Must be nice to live in the big city. Me, I drove hours and hours up to Hope to listen to the new gear. I agree, they sound great. Paul
  19. Exactly, it would have to be really flat. I have a ton of hills. Now that I remember, by first bike only had one gear, a big banana seat, big orange flag, and a horn... cool... Paul
  20. Sorry to hear of your loss. My grandmother is 92 and in poor health. We don't know how much more she has. I know that she too, has had a long life, but it will sure hurt when it is over. My prayers are with you, Paul
  21. Yeah, they may replay it latter on. It does remind me of this one time: I was taking a relaxing bath in the bathtub. The water was all peaceful like....[] Suddenly, from the depths of the water.....[][] Paul [][]
  22. Yeah, they may replay it latter on. It does remind me of this one time: I was taking a relaxing bath in the bathtub. The water was all peaceful like....[] Suddenly, from the depths of the water.....[][] Paul [][]
  23. Sunburnwilly, Can you explain a ground loop isolator? Paul
  24. Oh yeah, Klipsch just sound better and are cooler and are prettier and are sweat and are cool and look pretty and sound better. Paul
  25. You could consider getting slightly used Klipsch gear instead. It still sounds great. Read some of the posts here. We all obviously love Klipsch just a bit. Paul
