My subwoofer project almost 2/5th in...here is my progress.
sean5340 replied to TheEAR's topic in Home Theater
TheEar, If you have some time, could you recommend a 15" driver. I am currently using a Dayton Titanic III in a ported enclosure. Gross box volume is 7.04 ft3. Port is 6" x 33.5". Enclosure is 3/4" MDF. The amp is the rack mount Dayton 1000 rms. Current cut out is 14 1/16". Currently setup downfiring with port to the front. (I have 2 of these built only 1 w/driver) I am happy with the Dayton but want to upgrade. I mostly listen to 2 channel audio and occasionally watch a movie. Thanks in advance Sean -

Whoa! That's some serious subbage. What drivers are you using? -
Poll.......Why Do You Use a Subwoofer......Or, Why Wouldn't You?

I agree, the mids are sweeter with the sub. I find a big improvement in piano and strings. When it comes to rock I like to feel the thump in my chest. Way closer to a live performance with a sub. So for me it's to make it sound more "live". -
Nice setup Joe! I'd like to hear some Mac on my LaScala's.

That's what I thought. I'm 41 and still was unimpressed. The recording sounds good but the songs just don't do it for me. Sean

For those who own Lascalas,, How far apart do you have them?

Don't you like the way LaScalas make a great place to put stuff? [] -
Okay, I listened to some test tracks. Brian Bromberg- Witch Hunt, Tool- Sober also smooth jazz Nick Colionne- It's Been Too Long. The bass is as good or better than before. The overall sound is superior. The music sounds more raw and "Live" sounding. I can hear little things like the pluck on the bass strings and some surface slap on the drums. I don't think the sound was bad before. Actually it was quite good. It could be in my head I guess but that's OK. I've had a few people over and everyone seems to like what they hear. I've been thinking about tubes but I can't find anything wrong with the music as it is. The voices are there though and who knows what I'll do. Thanks Don and Tom

I was doing some experimenting and hooked my Sony N220 from the headphone jack on my JVC integrated to run the LSs. I started with the Sony input gains all the way down and turned them up one at a time until I barely heard noise from the LaScalas then backed down one notch. The sound is very good and I think I'll keep it this way awhile. My question is, will this do any harm to the system in the long run? I don't think it will but I have no background in electronics. Thanks in advance. Sean

Mine are 10'6" apart center to center. Toed in slightly and 4" from rear wall. The room is 22'x24'x8' and listening position is 9'6" from the front of the speakers. One is in a corner 2" from side wall. The other is about 10' from the side wall. They sound really good with everything. AC/DC- 74 Jailbreak is insane. Jethro Tull- Living in the Past LP really nice. New Frank Sinatra awesome. Gordon Lightfoot- Gord's Gold LP great. Old metal- Judas Priest (Rocka Rolla, Stained Class) Black Sabbath (Paranoid, Master of Reality, Black Sabbath) and Iron Maiden- (Killers, Number of the Beast) very good. Club music and new metal like you're at the concert. -
I know it's not Klipsch but they came out cool. Replaced factory woofers with Goldwwods. Sounds pretty good after some tone adjustments. Before

Well after about 15 records the midrange is very nice. Not harsh but very present and crisp. Horns, piano and strings are magnificent. I am very happy with this cartridge. Thanks to all that posted.

Has anyone ever built a set of OUT DOOR LA SCALA'S
sean5340 replied to Brac's topic in Technical/Restorations
I was thinking buy some beaters and have them sprayed with pickup truck bed liner. (Rhino lining) -
I think I would love to hear it. The TT is sounding nice. After about 25 sides played the midrange dialed in and sounds great. Now I need some really good LPs.

That's really cool. I don't think I ever saw one sealed. Well, how does it sound? Sean

Yeah, I am having alot of fun getting back into vinyl. I wish I would have done this a few years ago. Believe it or not I really enjoy cleaning the LP's, flipping 'em over and the analog sound is heaven! The M97xE has reduced surface noise significantly. This was almost a deal breaker for me and vinyl, now it's a non-issue. Thanks for the great feedback.

Time will tell. Mine sounds good to me. It's the first decent cartridge I've had, so I've nothing to compare it to. Me too!
-
Did you find the midrange very laid back? Mine seems almost too laid back at the moment. Like I said before I hope it opens up a little. Sean

I love excited air![]

I just got my M97 and was wondering what can I expect when it breaks in. I am very happy so far with about 8 hours on it but haven't noticed any changes. The soundstage and imaging are really impressive. The mids are very relaxed. I hope they open up just a bit. Thanks for input.

I have recently begun listening to LPs again. The Pioneer PL-512 is sounding really sweet. It's manual with a Circuit City clearance AT-1001 cart ($3.99). I've seen the PL-512 on Ebay for under $50.00. Just ordered a Shure M97Xe and can hardly wait.
