  1. Kentucky stethoscope. It's ok, I'm from Kentucky. LOL! Another Kentucky stethoscope trick here fer ya. Got a weird noise in your engine? A cut off broom handle carefully placed against the ear and against different areas of your engine will pinpoint the area of the noise. Harry
  2. My family was a lucky one. Our family Bibles had every known family member from the time my ancestors landed in Va. To take it a bit farther my cousin in Ca. (retired FBI) has run down most of the family through all sorts of documents. Now we're in the process of identifying family members in the old photographs and paintings handed down through the family for generations. Our family has it's own websight and about 30-40 of us are always contributing what we find to our site. Cool way to keep the family close also. Harry
  3. Its called Auto Erotica, you can seek counceling, its ok. My GF says the same thing about audio gear. "You can get professional help"I'm an old fart. I'm rude, crude, and not socially acceptable. Not politically correct. We used "rubbers" to keep our rifle "barrels" clean in the USMC. Harry
  4. America has always had a fascination with the automobile. We've been racing them and showing them off since their introduction into our society. I see no reason to think things will change. Technology may change but people don't. I'm still an analog guy in a digital world. I'm not alone. There's always a place for pure performance in ANYTHING. Klipsch Heritage compared to WalMart audio could be used as an example. If we want it we'll find the bucks to buy it. Damn the fuel prices or any obstacle. American muscle compared to Euro and Taiwan polymers. I'm buying a new car. I wish I could purchase a pure American automobile but I'm pretty sure it doesn't exist. I'll bet it went the way of international trade agreements and corporate bean counters. I lost my beloved Saab 9000CD to the flood of 2008. Loved the handling and turbo "boost" but the new Saabs are basically Saturns and I'm not impressed at all. I didn't drive the Saab much the last couple of years due to gas prices and not wanting to put a lot of miles and use on it. Great car though. I grew up in my dad's auto body repair shop in the 60's. I saw a lot of cars. Learned a lot. My first car I bought with my own money was a '65 GTO I bought wrecked in '67. 389 3 speed Fomoco tranny factory. Within a month it was sporting a Super T-10 rock crusher 4spd, Doug Thorley headers, Hillborn fuel injection, and 457 Zoom gears set up by Ron Tielking of Zoom fame, and a complete Crane roller valve train. Needless to say it was a kicka.. muscle car. I THINK it's a lot like the old Heritage line. Once you've had a killer speaker not much else will do. Put your old Heritage horns next to some Taiwan crap and you'll find a way to afford what you really want. I like the Camaro. Nostalgia? Looks? The sexy broad laying on the hood in "Transformers"? Don't know, don't care. I like it. To each his own. It's still the first auto in a couple of years to "give me wood". Harry
  5. I fell in love with this car in the movie "Transformers". http://www.chevrolet.com/camaro/ Harry
  6. I just got off the phone with Baddad (Glenn). He's having a ball. Tire trouble left him in a fix! Needless to say his spare is under the Khorn and in his small vehicle he can't safely retrieve his spare. A can of Fix-a-flat got him to the hotel. It was late and all repair facilities were closed. (I did the same thing last year driving back from Mississippi). Next stop for him is Hope. Harry
  7. Actually all the old Pioneer have open pots and should be cleaned from the inside along with the shafts from the outside. The openings on the pots will look like "crimped" places. Put a shot of cleaner in both sides of the crimps and rotate the shafts a couple of dozen times or so. Do the same on the switches and buttons. Turn the reciever on it's back, rotate the shafts, and then turn the receiver on it's face and rotate the pots a couple of dozen times again. DO NOT spray the tuner fins with DeOxit. It leaves a residue and is harmful to tuners. Non-residue sprays only on the fins. I find it easier to use a non residue cleaner on the pots and shafts initially and then a very light shot of the DeOxit last. The backs of the switches and buttons are also open and should be given a light shot of DeOxit after cleaning. The Pioneer uses an 8 Volt fuselamp for the face backlights. BE SURE TO LET THE CLEANERS DRY BEFORE POWERING UP!!!!! If you have an air compressor it wouldn't hurt to blow the dust out of the receiver and excess cleaners from the pots and switches. Harry
  8. Worth Fixing? The first thing to do is check for blown channel fuses inside the receiver. Next, Clean the switches including mode select, AND tape monitor switches on the Pioneers. You'd be surprised how many tape monitor switches make one channel cut out. (or both) A dirty volume control can cause one channel not to work also. I've got one here now that I have to "play with" to make the right channel come on. It's one of my test receivers and I'm used to it so I won't waste my good cleaning materials on it. Most of these old Pioneers will sound many times better with just a good cleaning. Harry
  9. May God bless and look over you and your family. I took care of my father the last 5+ years of his life. It seemed tough at times. I find now that the missed moments with him are much tougher than anything I may have gone through at the time. What I thought was tough at the time were actually blessings. Don't let one second slip by. You can not get it back. I shall include you guys in my prayers. Harry
  10. I've seen ArmorAll and furniture polish do this to rubber surrounds. I'm not saying this caused it but it's more than possible. Harry
  11. Being a Pirate is definitely in the attitude. "Well it's actually more of a guideline" Jimmy Buffett: Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call, Wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall. You've seen it all, You've seen it all. Watched the men who rode you, Switch from sails to steam. And in your belly you hold the treasure That few have ever seen, Most of them dreams, Most of them dreams. Yes, I am a pirate Two hundred years too late. The cannons don't thunder there's nothin' to plunder I'm an over forty victim of fate; arriving too late Arriving too late. I've done a bit of smugglin' I've run my share of grass. I made enough money to buy Miami, But I pissed it away so fast, Never meant to last, Never meant to last. I have been drunk now for over two weeks, I passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks, but I've got to stop wishin', got to go fishin' I'm down to rock bottom again. Just a few friends, Just a few friends. (Instrumental) I go for younger women, Lived with several awhile, And though I ran away, They'll come back one day. And still I can manage a smile It just takes awhile, just takes awhile. Mother mother ocean, after all these years I've found My occupational hazard being my occupation's just not around I feel like I've drowned, gonna head uptown. from: The Songs of Jimmy Buffett, 1978
  12. Not cool questioning the U.S.A. on it's greatness on it's Birthday. I take things like this personally. Whining? No. Pis..d off, Yes? Why would you make a statement like that on our Independence weekend holiday? I don't know if it was in jest but I considered it rude and unfriendly. I tried to be nice with my earlier post but the gloves are off pal. We can live without your beer and hookers. We have our own. Come to think about it, I doubt your country has anything we need at all. Harry
  13. Definitely The United States of America!!!!Anyone wanna debate? Name a better one. You can't. I've seen a bunch of them on 6 continents. They come and go. We're here and we'll stay here. Our system will see to that. We deeply believe in America. We love the U.S.A. and that's why we are the greatest country. We have always been willing to fight for our beliefs and rights. It's the unequaled love we have here that will always keep us where we are. We love our Freedom. We also stand up for the little guy needing help from the bad guy. We help the countries that can't help themselves. We feed the needy around the world. Our doctors and medical people volunteer to help around the world. We educate many doctors and nurses at our expense so they can go home and improve their medical care. We build schools, hospitals, new independent governments around the world at our expense. No sense going on any longer. You've got a right to your opinions and a right to voice them. Maybe, just maybe, that's another reason we're the greatest country in the world. You can speak up without being imprisoned, or your tongue cut out, or beheaded, or persecuted for speaking your mind. Well, except for some Patriotic Zealot like me. You also have the right to leave anytime you want. If you don't love the "Good ol' U.S.A." go ahead and leave or don't even come here. Nobody here is forcing you. I love the U.S.A. Harry
  14. If I were to try to run both pairs of speakers at the same time I'd choose seperate amps and a multi-channel preamplifier to do the job. That's probably the only way you'd be able to control both pairs. If running both pairs I do believe the Bose would "muddy" up the clarity and cleaner reproduction of the CWs though. I've owned both. I'm not a big 901 fan though. It's one of the hardest speakers I've ever had to properly place for good sound. Hanging the 901s would take some time to get the placement correct. As far as woofer switching goes, stick with the K-33. Engineered for the CWs and best choice by far in the cabinets. If you just have to change them out then I'd choose the Crites CW1526 cast frame woofs. Good upgrade for the bucks. You got a steal for $75 on the CWs. 1: Make sure the drivers are all working properly. 2: check the crossovers for proper function. With the square magnet K-33s you're in the time frame to replace the old oil can caps. Fact is, the old caps just deteriorate with time and so does the quality of sound. And check out all the wiring connections in the CWs. Clean and tight connections are a must. Shoot us some pics and serial #s and you'll get more input from us. Definitely keep us up on the status of your project here. Should be an interesting project. Congrats, Harry
  15. Try a touch of glue on the edges of the screen. Worked for me on a K-55 a couple of months ago. I couldn't find a new screen for it and I put a couple of drops of speaker surround glue on it. Fixed. Harry
  16. Ummm, dykes?? They're butch, not Dutch. Anyway, you forgot to mention that Amsterdam has the best window shopping in the world. Hey fella, You fish your pole, I'll fish mine. LOL! I was wondering if it would slide through. Harry
  17. CLASSIC!!! Gotta love our northern neighbors. Harry
  18. No disparity intended. We take pride in our country on the most important day in our country's history. Be it zeal or pride we are Americans and extremely proud of our country. Especially on it's birthday.BTW, I love the vintage Amperex tubes, wooden shoes, Tulips, dykes, and one of your beers. Harry
  19. Check out your connections. Simple but fairly common. I was changing around a lot of gear lately and broke the inner connections in my AQ Diamondbacks cables. I'd lost a lot of the "sparkle" and depth of the speakers. I switched cables and the excellent sound came back. I removed the ends and resoldered the connections and the cables were resurrected. If you've got another set of cables laying around you might give it a try. Harry
  20. Amen!Happy Birthday U.S.A. Never forget what it took to make our home. Never forget the "maintenance" involved. Looking back you have to try to understand the decision to declare our independence. It was probably one of the most difficult decisions our "Founding Fathers" ever faced. Imagine the consequences if we hadn't made the decision and didn't stand up for our rights. Looking back on the July 4, 1776 declaration is sure seems like a good decision now. We ARE the greatest country on the face of the earth. I always think of what it took for US to reach the point where we are. We have a brave and just country and I'm proud of it. This has stuck in my mind since reading it: John Stuart Mill: "War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing is worth a war, is worse." "A man who has nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety is a miserable creature who has no chance at being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." Harry
  21. Agreed.But...I tried out some of the inexpensive Jantzen from PE on my AA's and they're not bad. Not Sonicaps but not bad for $20 for 2 crossovers to my door. The values on the Jantzens are 1.8 and 12 instead of the 2 and 13. Harry
  22. Caution should be used on the lens cleaner. It has to be very mild and non residue on the lens. IF and WHEN I have the need to clean the lens I use "GC ISOBATH". It's a mild alcohol cleaner that leaves no residue. I also use a no particle lens cloth of the type used on soft projector lenses. Clean at least twice. Let each cleaning have time to completely dry before cleaning again. Chances are it won't need cleaning unless subjected to smoke, spray silicones, or furniture polish. Best of luck, Harry
  23. Are you talking about me??G, How noisy do you get? Harry
  24. These are not sealed switches and can be cleaned with a shot of "deoxit". They get dirty just like volume controls over the years. Also a little "lube" on the levers will smooth out operation and noise. Harry
  25. Make sure the CDP is sitting completely level on a solid surface. Any twisting of the chassis can bind the carriage. Make sure it's clean inside. Lenses can be obstructed by dust or other minor objects. (cat hair is a killer). Some may not show when the carriage is in the play position. Also check when the carriage is open for foreign objects. Unplug player for a few minutes to "reset" microprocessors. These are basic but important. Harry
