  1. I am MOST DEFINITELY NOT saying CDs are as good as vinyl. What I apparently did a poor job of saying is CDs have gotten very acceptable. My going to CD is more a convenience thing. I'm busy. From early to late I always have more than enough to do. With the CDs I can take a couple of steps and more music is playing. The vinyl is used only when the day is over, the 6 year old is asleep, all the outside noises have subsided for the night. I can then relax and enjoy the music the way it sounds best to me. My choice is vinyl. CDs are right there, right now, with minimal hassle during a busy day. I'm listening to CDs now to a very large extent. Vinyl is going to stay in this system. Always. Unless tomorrow holds a better way. I watched a Sci-Fi flick not long ago with 3D holographic imagery with supposedly live sound. It may be the next step in the evolution. CD sound is getting extremely good. Harry
  2. No one begrudges anyone for making a buck. I think the issues are the way in which it was done. Considering the circumstances it could have been done differently. This is "THE" forum and a certain decor is expected. Less probably won't be tolerated. "Loose lips sink ships" so to speak. The only personal remarks I made were about me. No other member. If I have offended then I shall render an apology if it is called for. If I get on someones case it will most like be one of my close friends that know me well enough to know I'm just kidding around in my own dry way. I might kick 'em between the K-22s or something. Harry
  3. "OK, what is an HDCD?" High Def, just a different decoding signal. Very good format. A lot of CDs have the HDCD encoding label on them and most don't even know it. If you check your CDs you will find many different decoding formats on them. The HDCD format has a very small rectangular box on the back of the Jewel case showing HDCD. All CDs are not created equal. Harry
  4. "Once again, the kids are more important. He would have been terribly dissapointed had I missed taking him up to camp. Same camp I went to as a kid and a counselor, now he goes there." You're a good dad and deserving of a good fathers day. My hat's off to you. Harry
  5. YEP, The boy got caught gettin' greedy. Shame on ya! About a month ago or so I decided to sell a pair of my "Belles". I debated putting them on the forum first for the same reasons everyone's debating about. I even called Colter for his opinion on this same thing. To loosely quote Michael, "Why not? everyone else does it". I even offered trading with Michael but he doesn't seem too interested in "depleting" some of the MUSEUM. I decided to "word of mouth" them and found a local buyer for them almost immediately. I didn't want to go through this same thing we're going through here because a couple of the forum members knew what I paid for them. I would have liked to have offered them to the forum first but I wanted the better money to buy a couple of new tube pieces. I've only sold one item through the forum. That was a new amp I no longer needed because I got my other amps restored. I sold it at a loss. But I just bought it to use while my other amps were in "transition". It's hard to sell an item for considerably less than market value. BUT..... I've come to consider this forum more "family" than a potential market. This forum is pretty cool and more important to me than "milking a buck". I know others feel the same way about it. Strongly. Don't bite the hand that feeds ya ! And definitely Don't "Poop in the yard where you play" Harry
  6. Same here. The ShengYa/Vincent 6922/6DJ8 HDCD has me doing the same thing. The sound isn't vinyl but very close. Close enough the vinyl's starting to catch dust. My vinyl collection is much larger than my CD collection but instead of searching numerous places for hard to find music I'm ordering CDs online. I've been preaching to my friends for years that vinyl can't be beat for good reproduction and they don't know what they're missing. Now, the CD is catching up and is close enough that the vinyl has taken a back seat. CD sound has come a long way. I've been buying HDCDs and mostly the sound is awesome. I recently bought the Billie Holliday "Me, myself, and I" (HDCD) and even if it is CD the instrumental and vocals are very close to my old vinyl. CDPs are getting expensive and the quality is going up. How much more can they improve CD? I don't know but it's getting pretty good. I'm glad I have both. Harry
  7. OB, Just capitalism at it's finest. Seems to me the mistake was "bragging" about a good price and getting caught jacking up the price. "Any misdeeds on a persons part will always come back and bite them in the posterior". Harry
  8. Yep, side to side 33-1526 first Mono test first just for a "Head to Head". Speakers were 6' in front of me. Obvious difference but I wanted to hear the "Music I'm used to" hence the "stereo" tests side by side 33-1526 and then switched out. It ain't exactly amateur night here Michael. I just didn't want to type this all out. I'm fixing lunch for my 6 year old, doing laundry, cleaning windows, making room in the "audio repair shop" for Pilgrimage guests, and monitoring the forum for a revelation in sound improvement. Be nice or I'll kick you right between the "K-22s". BTW, Just my opinion, My speakers, My ears, my test, my money spent, my validation. Maybe Klipsch will buy the upgrade from Bob. He's done the legwork, testing, marketing. Sounds like he's already done a fair bit of testing too! Harry
  9. "I was unsure about whether this was an audible difference at first, but with 50 to 60 of these in use now, reports have indicated that it is and is an improvement." Bob, After reading your last post on these I got curious and pulled the cast out of my "Wallrus" and put K-33s back in and listened to a very familiar tune by Robert Cray I use a lot for "evaluating speakers with my ear". I played the song "I Shiver" 5:07 twice. I then put the Cast CW1526 back in and listened again. Once was all it took to notice what I liked most about the cast woofer. The bass notes carried better and were clearer. Definitely more detailed. I listened at an average volume level in my small room. I put the K-33s back in a couple of minutes ago just to be sure of what I heard. Yep, definitely better sounding with the cast woofer. I'm glad I did this switch back and forth comparison. Now I know for sure I wasn't biased because I spent my money on the cast and just wanted it to sound better. It does sound better. No doubts. I can put the rest of the screws back in and leave them alone now. Harry
  10. Just wondering if you got it up and running again. You're not supposed to turn off the receiver at the power switch. Remote only for normal use. I don't care for this system. Everytime I pull mine out of the closet I have to re-set it and EVERY one of the functions has to be redone. It's got so much crap on it I still haven't figured out how to use it all. Save buttons on every function. It takes about a half hour punching buttons to get it to sound good again. I don't understand this user unfriendly design being put in the market. There has to be a better way to run this receiver. I'm giving this to my EX just to aggravate her and drive her nutty (er). Harry
  11. Nice CWs! Onkyo doesn't have the best service name. I think I'd look up the failure rate and compare to Denon or Yamaha. The CWs will give some SS amps/receivers a hard life. Some can be very harsh with the CWs and Heresy models. Denon isn't bad. My son has a Denon 3600 with CWs and the sound is very good out of it. Pretty smooth for SS. Harry
  12. I'm going to buy a HT system. Klipsch Klipsch Klipsch.... Harry
  13. someone's looking at new tube preamps! Harry
  14. Well I found a very nice product to put the texture back on the KP-201s. I went to Lowes to get another can of Satin Black spray enamel to match the original color and found a texture spray used on outdoor furniture to make the furniture texture look like concrete finish. There are about a half dozen different textures available. From Rough concrete look to a fine sand texture. It's made for outdoor use on wood, concrete, plastics, etc. It should hold up well. It comes in a variety of colors. Except the satin black. It goes on very easy right of the can and dries almost immediately. I let it "flash" dry and gave the light charcoal base I had chosen 3 coats of the black satin. They came out pretty nice. It is a nice product and easy to use. Total cost of black satin spray enamel and the texture spray = right at $9.00 + the governors cut of 6% here in Indiana = Less than $10.00 for a nice textured finish. Now they look as nice as they sound. They need cleaned up but will come out nice when done Harry
  15. No problem. The Denon site can be rough browsing. If you register and join the members club it gets very easy to navigate. Go figure! Think they want you "in the fold"? Harry
  16. here's the direct link for your manual. download and print a copy. Harry http://usa.denon.com/ArchivedAVReceivers.asp?archivedModelSearch=true&clearCurrent=true&archivedCategory=AV&archivedModel=AVR-3801&imageField.x=11&imageField.y=10 http://usa.denon.com/ArchivedAVReceivers.asp?archivedModelSearch=true&clearCurrent=true&archivedCategory=AV&archivedModel=AVR-3801&imageField.x=11&imageField.y=10
  17. I pulled the manual for my 3600 which should be the same. Here are the steps to re-initialize your processor. 1: turn off power on the receiver. Not the remote. 2: Hold AC3RF and Phono buttons in together 3: turn on power on the receiver, not the remote. 4: hold until your display is flashing at about 1 second intervals and release. 5: if that doesn't work repeat steps 1-4 6 Call denon 24 hour help line Harry
  18. there is 2 buttons on the front you have to hold in together for about 5 seconds to reset the processor. If you have the manual it tells you which one. If not I can find my manual and tell you which ones they are Harry
  19. "This is some kind of sickness" Take 2 Klipsch and call us in the morning! Harry
  20. Get in contact with Bob Crites. (BEC) He IS THE MAN on the repair. Probably just a diaphram. bobcrites@mac.com Best, cheapest, THE MAN without a doubt. It's not an expensive fix. Harry
  21. "but think I'm developing a bias towards german tubes, and I don't think that's a good thing. Gotta stay opened minded, but it's hard." Yep, kinda lean in this direction too. I've been looking for a good pair of old Tele's for a month or so myself. Getting hard to find. This is what I had in mind but a bit frustrated because I haven't been able to find the "right" ones. It's why I'm asking opinions on these. Harry
  22. Those are beautiful CWs. Well worth the trip. Not many around as nice as he keeps his. Price more than fair also. Envy here. Be proud of those great speakers. I have a friend that was looking at them before you snarfed them up. He and his wife were "twiddling thumbs" and finally made up their minds AFTER you bought them. Snooze you lose. Congrats. Harry
  23. Hi, I HAD a pair of Furman AR-1215 conditioners. Last week I was hit by lightening. I lost my PC, and some other appliances. I lost both conditioners and a seperate surge protection strip. Lightening hit less than 20 feet from my systems. I doubt anything is totally safe from mother nature. I will say I THINK I would have lost about everything in my system if it hadn't been for my conditioners. Don't cheap out. It may cost you a lot. Harry
  24. I can't give you specs but I can tell you for a fact you will have a dominating K-600 horn. Been there, done that. It unbalanced the driver output and overshadowed everything coming out of the cabinet. It took me about 30 seconds to pull the 5's back out. Harry
