Old Guys Are Helpful.. I was in Lowe's the other day pushing my cart around when I collided with a young guy pushing his cart. I said to the young guy, "Sorry about that. Probably over siplified but yes, do not underestemate the power of America in this respect. I am talking about the young criminals willing to "go the extra mile" because of what is seen and done in the states. The over glorified "Get rich or die tryin", "I´m takin what I want because I can´t get it anyway else" if this message has not been sent out then I appologize and the press/media here are telling lies, and I don´t drink this early in the morning. I respect this, I am also not prey. It is your decision if you want to hunt him down and "stop him from threatening you or destroying someone else´s lives", what I read as kill him, then it is what you got to do. You also realize what happens to you IF you get caught and get lock up for this scum. It is your decision to make. Let's just start with "don't blame entertainment" for behavior. Yes, as/if the economy worsens we'll probably see more homes broken into and more people hurt. More lives damaged or changed forever. Yes, there's always the possibility of retaliation IF the criminal gets away. I for one don't want to worry that IF a criminal gets away he/she will come back. I say she because it's getting more common. Recently, here in Indy a man was shot in the face by a woman when he opened his door. She was killed but AFTER she'd shot the homeowner. He was lucky he wasn't killed. That happened only a month or so ago. There's been a rash of home break-ins here in Indy with some good people losing their lives to criminals and home invasions. Predators will continue to prey on the weak. They will NOT stop unless stopped. There are those of us that will NOT protect themselves and hope for the best. I understand that. I won't depend on dumb luck again. The laws should be written to protect the innocent and the court system should have common sense. Unfortunately common sense has little to do with the way law is interpreted as far as I can tell. Should justice be served by the neighbors "detaining" the invader. Probably not but I have to admit I liked the fact that the neighborhood was looking out for their own interests. Tough situation, not legal most likely. Repeat offenders of violent crime SHOULD NOT be released and returned to society to continue terrorizing and victimizing the good folks of our society. WHY is this happening? Remember this and don't let this part of the legal system continue selling us down the river. Speak up when you see these injustices performed. Yes, we've become civilized to a point. ANYONE breaking into your home has to be considered a threat to your life. Once the bleeding heart tree hugging lawyers and judges get involved it gets twisted all out of shape. Dead men tell no tales. A bad guy is a bad guy. I have no use for them and no compassion or sympathy. I won't lose a seconds sleep unless I have to clean up a mess. PERIOD!

I was told a long time ago by a "professional" thief that locks are only to keep the honest people honest. "Build a better mouse trap and some SOB will come up with a better mouse". His words not mine. I have an alarm system in place all the time with back up. With or without electricity it's active 24/7. I also am never over one step from a defensive weapon in my home and ALWAYS armed to protect myself and loved ones when I walk out the door. Many states frown upon protecting yourself unfortunately with criminals having more rights than the victims. I hope the victim isn't victimized by the legal system on top of being victimized by the criminal. I'll bet there's enough of us electronics geeks, modders, and tweekers, that have some "bizzare" form of alarm system in place. I for one have had to face an intruder in my home. I was NOT prepared for it and was totally at the mercy of the evil that invaded my home. I had a gun to my head by one of the intruders while the other ransacked my home, drank my beer, and fixed themselves something to eat. It lasted almost a half hour. My wife and son were also threatened by the same gun as I sat helpless. I knew one of the intruders and was convinced we were going to be killed. Only by the grace from above were we spared. Never again will that happen. I pray I never to be faced with the choice to have to defend myself but I will if necessary. Harry

My thoughts on this and the reason behind the post.It is Football and an extreme contact sport. It is Professional Football and a business. Business being the key word here. Roster spots on the line, free agency dollars, and win at all costs mentality. I want to see an honorable, clean, and well played game no matter the outcome or score. Good Luck and Good football. OK, I've always thought the Saints were a class act. It seems their defensive coordinator wants Manning hurt where he can't get up. I know it's mostly trash talk but "what IF"..... I guess it's getting closer to game time now and the pressure is rising. This Super Bowl has been different for me. I've always pulled for the "Aints" through thick and thin and as bizzare as it sounds I wouldn't have been very upset IF the Saints won this one. After the recent comments by the Saints, well.... Watch moving them. You can damage the veneer on the bottoms very easily. You'll end up with chunks of veneer missing. Been there done that. I peeled a 3" long and 3/4" wide sliver off mine. Luckily my GF at the time did vintage furniture restoration and repaired the area where it wasn't noticable at all. Harry

The size issue on some of the replacement caps was my major headache. IF you find a qualified Elf tech send him/her my way as I've still got one needing done eventually. My apologies, it's as "politically correct" as I get. Good units when done right. Harry

I like the Mundorf Silver Oil caps in my MX-110. Not cheap though. There's not a lot of room in that pre for some of the cap replacements. I don't know if this is your first attempt but the 110 isn't one I'd lose my cherry to. A good cheap cap that matches well with the Macs is the Nichicon Audio grade caps. Good luck, Harry

NO - that is NOT OK with a Sovtek or Sino 5AR4. Not really recommended with a Mullard, either, although they will usually "take it". 5AR4s should be allowed to cool down before powering back up again. I DO use Mullards. I believe in the benefits of tube rectifiers on Klipsch, and I use pre 1966 Mullards in my VRDs. I stocked up in recent years.....you CAN do better than typical market prices if you look around...... Don't overlook the Groove tube 5AR4 new issues. The new one is an exact Mullard copy from the '60s. I've been running 4 of them in different amps and I'll have to admit they're a good stable tube so far. I like the "Euro" tubes from the '60s best to my ears. The "DISCLAIMER" to this is all tubes sound different with all components so trial and error is the key. Not all tubes match up with your gear so rolling is the only way to find out what fits your ears and system. I still have a tendency to burn my fingers on the "tone controls". Let 'em cool down. Once you find what you like it's cool. Money aside, rolling tubes is fun and part of the pleasure.

OK, I got the Soundstage preamp fixed. It was only the 2.2 ohm 2w resistor. When I desoldered the burnt resistor one of the legs wasn't even soldered (SEE PIC) and I'm thinking that could have been the problem to begin with. I replaced the resistor and have been playing it out about 3 hours now with no issue. Playing quiet and strong with both channels balancing out even. Ok, I read the reviews on this unit and I'll have to agree with the "Bright" statement. It is edgy with the Russian military tubes in it. It's so harsh on top I didn't care for the sound of the preamp at all. I didn't give up and put a pair of 6922 Tele's in it and it's a heck of a sounding line stage now. The "Nasty" came from the tubes. It's a good soundin preamp now and I did notice on this unit that IC's and power cords DO make a huge difference. So much a difference it's almost as noticable as rolling out the tubes. These are very basic and simple preamps with good heavy iron in them. Cosmetics are a forethought on these to help sell them. They're a solid chassis with decent components in them. I"m sure that the French Capacitors could be better but overall for the buck not a bad unit.
