  1. Remember the components of Khorns have been used in concert applications (LaScalas), often outdoors, for years. I would assume the drivers are OK unless my hearing told me otherwise. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  2. What a great room for a home theater!!! Deserves the best, which, IMHO is the Heritage series speakers - Khorns (you have the corners!}will give you the best for music and HT as will Belles and/or LaScalas. If these are too big use Heresys for center/surrounds/rears. The speaker components in the Heritage series were home adaptation of theater designs. What better for a HT than speakers that were designed for theater/concert applications. Finding them may be a chore but worth it. Of course the new ones are due in April. Choice of subs for LFEs is another matter - the more musical ones are not as dramatic on LFEs - a combination has worked best for me. For electronics the new Outlaw pre-pro looks like a real winner. Their new seven channel amp looks real good but all that power isn't needed for klipsch speakers but then it's high quality at a low price. Or, if you have the $$$, the Klipsch / Aragon electronics are very high quality. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  3. The Sony CE775 has reappeared on the Crutchfield site for $199 http://www.crutchfield.com/S-14OJIMsDEcU/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?i=158SCDC775&s=0 ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  4. The 511B is 500cps cutoff the 811B is a 800Hz cutoff. I want to discuss this with Tom but I think the 800 cutoff is the result of a shorter horn ... ie - the 511 is a longer horn ..... but there is probably more to it than that ...they do look much the same. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  5. Outlaw 1050 on ebay - probably see more of these as new Outlaw preamp is now available. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1341870981 ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  6. A fan would be a good idea .... Radio Shack or Parts Express carry small fans for electronics. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  7. Tom- I was going to wait to talk to you about this in Lima but my curiosity is demanding to know now. As you may remember, I got a couple of Altec 511Bs, put parts express adaptors on them (after drilling three holes) for the K55Vs. They offer wider dispersion and added clarity, an improvement over the existing K400s. They of course are bigger than the 400 and present a mounting problem and also need damping (I think I may have mentioned previously that I found a giant zip lock baggie draped over the top and hugging the rear of the horn seems to work well}. Presents some cosmetic problems, however, that I might tackle if you can answer the following question. As you know, the 511Bs are readily available but are 500Hz horns not 400Hz. The 511B is, with parts express adaptor, about 1.5 inches shorter than the K400. Interestingly with an Atlas adaptor (which I have not found the time to track down) they would be about the same length. So here the question: How does a 400 Hz horn differ from a 500Hz? How does the EV SM120A 400Hz horn differ from the 500Hz 511B? What would be the differences in sound quality? BTW many thanks for sharing your wisdom, experience and fascinating internet site. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems

An interesting new remote out of Canada: www.harmonyremote.com ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  9. I got two from ubid months ago ...both are working perfectly. Call Klipsch they'll make things right. They are very musical subs that pack quite a punch for their size. Your subs would probably be very good with Scary Movie II and therefore very popular with adolescents of all ages. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems This message has been edited by soundog on 03-20-2002 at 07:18 PM

  11. The one I have looks very much like the parts express converter and wall wart. I just paid too much. It did not seem to degade the signal but I now use an MSB automatic swittching device that recognizes which CD changer is playing, applies jitter reduction and signal regeneration and provides both toslink and cooaxial input/output options. It of course sounds better, does more and costs considerably more. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  12. I got a device that cost about $35 that made the conversion. It was powered by a wall wart. I can not remember where I got it but I think I still have it if you're interested. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems This message has been edited by soundog on 03-19-2002 at 04:38 PM
  13. If you want your CD collection to sound close to SACDs process them through the Perpetual Technologies P1A & P3A devices. The Dan Wright mod of the second one is definatly worthwhile as is the optional Monarchy power supply. While not inexpensive, it makes my 1200 plus CDs in standard SONY juke-boxes sound great - even those that are copies. SACDs are better, however, if recorded in DSD. I will not bother with reissues however. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  14. I see three sub amps listed in the Parts Express catalog and on their site: 300-792 on sale for $79.; the 300-794 on sale for $129.90 and the 300-793 for $135. I have two of the last one which is the same as the second one except with a remote control feature for an extra $5.10. A very desirable feature which allows for change of crossover point and frequency - very handy when switching between music and action movies. The cheaper amp has half the output but looks fine. Should drive the JBLs with no problem. All three are well protected agains frying and there is little risk of frying the JBLs with any of them. All three also offer a number of hook-up options. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems This message has been edited by soundog on 03-19-2002 at 07:03 AM
  15. I cann't find it now either .... maybe it was a misprint or the last one but I did get a confirmation. They even knocked another $12.95 off the price because I bought a book from them about a year ago! The total came to $196.95 including shipping! ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  16. You could use a "Y" connector so you can split the preamp out signal between your sub and the shakers amp. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  17. I think you have to ask for what? Some subs seem to work better for music; while others provide more dramatic special effects for movies {LFEs). I read somewhere that less musical subs provide better effects due to higher levels of second order distortion. I dont know how true this is but it seems to make sense. The Klipsch KSW12 & 15 s for example offer a lot of punch at a low price. The Klipsch Reference subs, however, are more musical and are the better choice where musical fidelity is more important than room rattling special effects. At the suggestion of Ray Garrison, I use Klipsch LF-10s set to a 40 Hz crossover and wired in parallel with each of my Khorns, producing a more robust low end without taking much from the hair-trigger dynamics of the Khorn bass bin. For movies I have a KSW15 in the center of the room connected to my receivers LFE output. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  18. There seems to be as many different opinions on wire as there are brands of wire. Many maintain that wire is wire and there is little or no difference. My sugggestion is start with what you have and compare it to whatever you buy with a money back guarantee. It's what you think sounds best that counts. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  19. By the way ... www.crutchfield.com has the 775 on sale for a mere $199.! Just bought another one. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  20. Leave it in repeat mode for a few days initially and then just leave it on - that's what's worked for me anyway. It wouldn't have to be burned in again if you did turn it off but might take a few minutes to reach optimum. Tubes have been known to take a half hour or more to reach their optimum. Not absolutly sure about this stuff ... have yet to hear a good explaination but seems to make a difference. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  21. I think Klipsch customer service is tops. Here's my experience: A couple of years ago a local Nobody Beats the Wiz, an authorized Klipsch dealer, was going out of business. Towards the end of that event I found the various elements of a Klipsch THX Home Theater System that had been a store demo for sale very cheap. The reason was that the LCRs were all banged and scratched with punched out speakers, same with the surrounds - one speaker was actually missing, the KSW12II sub had a blown amp. The store had signs that all warranties were in effect. I knew Klipsch's reputation from the time I was a teenager in the 50s and 60s. All I had was the NBT Wiz sales slips stamped full - manufacturers warranty - no boxes, no manuals, no warrranty cards. I phoned Klipsch - they sent prepaid shipping labels and fixed or replaced everything at no cost. All I had to do was fill the dings and scratches and repaint the units black. I ended up with a fully functioning THX system at less than a quarter of it's original cost. I found this board which rekindled my interest in this hobby and I'm still going strong buying new (subs, surrounds) and old used Klipsch Heritage products. I think they offer excellent products and value at every price point and back up their products with outstanding customer service. I just wish their dealers would display and demo their products to their full advantage. Of course, the more profitable a speaker line is to a dealer the more likely they are to treat it favorably. I wouldn't mind seeing klipsch have their own stores. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems This message has been edited by soundog on 03-17-2002 at 06:28 AM
  22. People on Audio Review and Audio Asylum are citing various time periods (around 300 hrs seems to be the outside figure). I have left mine on for over a month and it just seems to get better and better! And I use to scoff at burn-in. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  23. That's easy - the Outlaw 1050 at $499 plus shipping. Outstanding reviews: "A high -end receiver at a mass production price" - Stereophile Guide to the Home Theater Editor's Gold Choice for 2002. You can not beat it at twice the price IMHO. Available from www.outlawaudio.com .... if they have "B" open box stock at $449. grab one ... they have top customer service and really stand behind their products and will answer any questions or solve any problems you have with anything, including hook-ups and configuration of other components! ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  24. HornEd- The new Heritage speakers might have better drivers than the old. In that case older ones might actually be reduced in value. On the other hand, as is most likly, the drivers will be similar but the price will be higher. Then the older speakers will go up in value. I hope. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
  25. It would depend on how far back you are sitting from them. ------------------ Soundog's HT Systems
