  1. BobG- Does this mean Klipsch will not give a 90 day warranty for us buying off the board? How about free refinishing of cabinets? In seriousness though I think Klipsch can post a disclaimer so there is no confusion about liabillity.
  2. The classified section would be nice! It would be nice to be able to buy having some sense of confidence ( assumed ) in buying members of the boards systems. Would we be able to buy certain members crossovers and cat 5 interconnects thru the classifieds also or would it be limited to Klipsch gear?
  3. I think the shields are called bucking magnets ( for whatever reason I don't know ). Call Madisound they'll help you out. If your adventurous try a soup can or coffee can over the magnet to see if that will help. If you try this and it works it might be a good idea to deaden the can with something like Dynamat or Moretite window caulk ( a favorite here on the Klipsch board! ). Good luck, let us know how it works out!
  4. You gotta be kidding. For all those of you who have any ideas after seeing the link I have only one thing to say- DON'T DO IT!!!
  5. Please take this post as sarcastic humor as it is intended to be: Randy, I am suprised that you did not find an improvement to your system by connecting the sqwaker to the woofer. Upon reading your post it got about 8- 10 members of this board to do it also and your all happy and just wondering what would happen if you slapped the 10 cell altec ballast in there to boot! Then up comes the post from Al K. saying It does'nt look to good on the scope and you modifiers listen again and say that Al might be right on this one. Kidding aside I can only envy the effort, time and interest all of you put in to your systems attempting to reach the Holy Grail! I can only dream of a time in my life when I could spend the time and effort doing the same!
  6. I go back and forth with my preamps, Audio Research SP3A ( upgrades courtesy of Audio Research ) and my VanAlstine modded out PAS. Both tube gear. They each are very nice the Audio Research has more all out balls with gobs of gain where as the VanAlstine is more laid back- a kinder gentler preamp as it were. I think in a true audio sense the VanAlstine kicks the bejeebers out out the SP3A, but I do love the sound of the Audio Research. I do like tube preamps and good solid state amplifier combinations
  7. This post has got me thinking a bit. There seems to be a segment of members who like putting that Altec stuff on top of perfectly good Klipsch speakers. Kinda like slapping a hood ornament from an old car onto a new chevy : . I have some horns ( 1005's, 805's and a smaller set for the 290's ), some drivers ( one set of 288b, 1 set of 288c and a set of 290's ) and a set of A- 7 cabinets that I would be willing to trade for a set of Forte's or Cornwall's. I would also consider Heresy's. I am also interested in some interesting electronics. If anyone is interested ( although I don't quite get the Klipsch/ Altec mods ) let me know.
  8. jweed- What driver is on the horns? I have a set of the 8 cells and 10 cell horns and some smaller horns mated to 290 drivers. I also have a few sets of 288 drivers. Oh I also have a set of A- 7 bass cabinets. I seem to hold on to stuff for no particular reason . It drives my wife nuts! I have never been impressed with the A- 7's, but the opprotunity came up and I took them.
  9. One of my biggest gripes in this age is the lack of REAL audio stores. I grew up at a time when there where quite a few different stereo shops in my area. Some were small chains and others were true independents. It was a big deal in my small world when my Dad brought me downtown Minneapolis to a shop called " Sound Enviorment " and the first thing I saw when I walked in was a pair of Khorns. The salesman spent probally 2 hours showing this kid gear ( and explaining the why and how's of the gear ) that even today I can not afford! Where are these stores today that help insure the future of hi- end audio when all there is is the mass supermarket KLH, Bose pushers? I do have sort of an attitude when I go into a mid- fi shop like this areas Audio King. There staff just dont seem to know much. A while back I inquired about Klipsch's Heritage line and I got a " They havent made those for 20 years ". I just go " oh " and walk away. This is not the only time I have gotten uninformed answers- just the latest. I WANT A REAL AUDIO STORE IN MY TOWN!!- sorry for the soap box-
  10. In commercial installations it is required by code to have "back boxes" in some states. I dont know about residentail codes. I have seen some metal, plastic and foam covers. If I were to do a in- ceiling setup, I would probally go with the foam just to keep the insulation out of the way.
  11. I also have bought alot of things off of e- bay and I agree with what sunnysal has to say, although my best buys have been from sellers who where either 1st time or near 1st time sellers. I have received items not as described, but so far I have been able to make up for misrepresentation of goods with refunds by the seller. I bought a pair of older a/d/s speakers which the seller claimed where in excellent condition. When I got them the foam around the drivers where gone! The seller sent me a full refund and told me to keep the speakers. I had them re- foamed for around $80.00 from a local speaker repair shop. So all in all I came out. Be prepared for a gamble with e- bay, but there are good deals and all sellers I have dealt with have been good about working out problems with me.
  12. rowooo- The hiss can be nothing more than the effeciency of your speakers that you are hearing. I have always noticed a hiss with Klipsch LaScala's and Heresy's. It is just your systems noise floor. It seems a little more prevelent with tube equipment also.Should go away as soon as you play program material though. By the way, where's the spell check on the new board? Some of us NEED it!
  13. rowooo- Do you have the cd player and the amp on the same electrical circut? Polarity of the plugs the same? Good ground ( if they are grounded plugs ) ? what about trying a drain wire between the cd player and the amp? Just some ideas.
  14. sunnysal- By all means look at VanAlstine! Great gear! I have a super pas 3 and love it. It is very natural and spacious. http://www.avahifi.com/ Do yourself a favor and check this gear out!!
  15. I went into one here at the mighty mall of america for about two minutes. Just long enough for me to over here the salesman attempt to impress a potential customer with their plexiglass subwoofer moving styrofoam peanuts around. I smiled and walked away. By the way, I saw Herbie Hancock selling the acoustimass on an infomercial. How do they stuff 9 feet of transmission line in that thing is beyond me.
  16. sunnysal, My Audio Research sp3a has the tone controls and two sets of outputs but are not switch- able. Could'nt you just turn on/ off the amp you do not want to use? I think you can find sp3/ sp3a's for around $700- $1000. It is a nice preamp but I do think the newer technology tube stuff will sound far better. Maybe a re- worked Dynaco pas would work, though it only has one output you could use the tape out as a second.
  17. My LaScala's were hijacked to our small non- profit movie theatre. We have another LaScala that we bought used so we have the stage speakers taken care of, but, we need some Heresy's or comprable for surrounds- something like six would be perfect. Right now we have a couple of Mackie srm 450's- one in each rear corner. It would be nice to be able to afford to do it right, with surrounds along the side walls though. So I hope our next upgrade will be surrounds.
  18. Klipschguy- I owned a pair of the pro version 801's, I gutted the drivers out of the thing, put in new baffles and mounted Jensen 6 X 9 coaxial drivers in them for my wife's Jeep. What an improvement! I am always proud of bringing that up to " those guys " ! I guess I would rather have my wife laugh at my HT hobby than laugh at a part of my anatomy!
  19. Klipschguy- I believe only Bose would be considered an irreconcilable difference! , or maybe for true Klipsch radicals- anything other than Klipsch.
  20. Anyone have opinions on what the best speaker Klipsch sells today ? Outside of the Heritage series. There has been mention in the past of the Forte as a great speaker of that line up, is there a similar model today that stands out as " great " ?
  21. J.D.M- I got me one of those Bryston amps! It's a 3B. Made a deal with my wife- I get the Bryston- we can have a child! I should have been thinking before child # 2 came along, who knows what I could have ended up with! I like the Bryston, but I recently have gotten the tube itch. Maybe talk of child #3 should start up! Oh- Imax sources out there amp needs to Bryston also. 12000 watts+ worth per theatre!
  22. Klipschguy- Those Lexicon amps- aren't they repackaged Brystons? Only came across them once quit a while back and seems to me it was what the sale man told me.
  23. I'll one up DLUngurait! I will drive over to your place and pick them up and bring them to my place for FREE!! I really dont know what the best way to ship them would be but I think heavy gauge cardboard double layered and straping would be the best for packaging. Good luck and let me know if you want to take me up on my offer!
  24. Dont over look VanAlstine! Great gear! http://www.avahifi.com/ Please do yourself a favor and check them out!
  25. I was interested in bi- amping a set of LaScala's I own in the mid eighties and Klipsch sent me out information on this topic- recommending against it. It was a while back and can't recall the reasons, I never did it and always wondered the same thing- tubes for the mid/ highs and a quality solid state for the low frequency drivers.
