So that´s 3 for DTS, I agree on the better sound. After browsing some more I saw that the majority of the newer concert DVD´s have DTS. Has anyone seen/heard concerts in HD-DVD or BlueRay? I have only seen movies here in Germany. It would be interesting to hear a concert in Dolby HD (If I had the player for it;) Ran

My oppinion is that streaming is pay per view, thus a copy on a disk is moot. This would reflect the 0.99€ price tag (here in Germany) per movie. Here you also get a "my favorites" in the movie list and at 0,99€ a pop you could stream it 30 times (HD) before you have the price for 1 HD-DVD of either format. Other than Heavy Metal at the Midnight Matenee I have not seen any movie more than say 10 or 15 times. (Oh forgot Midnight Run I saw that at least 30 times: Choriso and eggs mmmmmmm[]) Ran

In germany this is starting and I think within the next year or so everyone will be getting their tv over the telephone line. Deutsche Telekom is offering VDSL (25.064 or 51.064 k/bit downstream, 10.048 k/bit upstream) with unlimited surfing/Telephone and a TV package with 70 normal channels and 6 or so HD channels (at present). They also offer video on demand with a film for 0.99€. Right now this package costs around 70€ a month. Where I live in Hannover they are doing the first tests and it should cover germany in about 2 years (+- a few thousand homes[*-)]). I myself am waiting for the other phone companies to start offering VDSL and then the price war will break out and we will be getting this offer for about 30€ month. I prefer DTS myself as well. Since the Eagles farewell tour 1 I have been looking at the audio information on the DVD´s that I buy since that DVD sounds like a studio recording. I myself would think they would use the most "modern" format. Could possibly be due to space on the DVD but I am not 100% sure. Ran

Hi everybody, I was browsing for a couple of new films the other day and started wondering what is the determing factor for the audio format of the film?? Example: I was looking at Pirates of the Caribbean 1 - 3 and saw that films 1 and 3 are Dolby digital 5.1 and film 2 is in DTS Anyone know how it is decided which format will be used??? From what I have read they do multiple tests head to head with all speakers. They have built a room where they have a "Raumakustiksimulator". Through microphones in the wall and speakers they can simulate the different areas Church, trainstation, livingroom etc. Where it says Akustic-Assistant the letters stand for different room types. They are saying just because it works where you buy it does not mean it will work at your home, or vice versa for that matter. K lein or small rooms (2 meters or below), M ittelgrosse = Middle size room (2 to 3 meter), G rosser = Large rooms (>4 meter), T rocken= Dry sounding (0,2 to 0,4 second hall), H alliger= alot of Hall (> 1 second), A usgewogener= Ballanced room (0,5 - 0,7 seconds), D irekt = Direct on the wall , W andnah= Near the wall (60 to 90 cm form wall), F rei stehend = Stand alone (at least a meter from the wall) The Palladium "can/should" be used in " GTHAF" (green boxes) this means G rosser = Large rooms T rocken= Dry sounding H alliger= alot of Hall A usgewogener= Ballanced room F rei stehend = stand alone These tests are done with each set of speakers using different types of music doing an a/b. What I find interesting they are also saying in the AK colum what type of Amp mates good with the speakers. If the number of the Amp is the same or larger they say the optimal dynamic is guaranteed, so the lower the number the more amps could push the speakers. "a" means Active box. They are also saying the Palladium is the best bang for the buck in the "Spitzenklasse" so to say the Crem de la crem.

You are correct in your observation that even after going through 1 year of hell I was still living in denial saying "Oh, it wont happen to me!". It would probably be better when smokers could do a "Scared Straight" type of project. This thread brought up memories!! Memories where we bought him a handy just so he could call us in case of emergency. If this number rang we just sprang in the car and raced over. After the operation he could not speak. We only got one call, called paramedics raced over and found the sink full of blood. The tumor was back and basicaly exploded a blood vessel, back into the hospital for 2 weeks. Due to the pain he was having we were concidering a Moriphine pump to keep him "pain free" until the enevatible happens. 2 days before he should have gone into the hospital I found him by my morning visit dead. After the inital shock and mourning we were so happy the suffering was over. The last month he could not speak,eat or basicaly do anything due to constant pain in neck, under the tounge where they cut 1/3 of it out and headaches. Thats just not living. Please all of you smokers out there who want to quit, to coin a phrase from Nike, Just do it. I am at 3 weeks now and still going strong, I would lie if I would say I don´t want to smoke one with the wife. Luckily my will not to smoke one is stronger now. This is definately a situation like an Alcoholic, just stop and don´t look back because it is so easy to start again. Ran

Hello to all, First I WAS a smoker since I was 15, am now 40 as of Sept. Smoking 1 to 1.5 packs a day. Lucky Strike 2 weeks ago I read this thread and said what the H.E. double toothpicks try it again. Let it be said I did try for about 3 years ago when my father inlaw died of cancer. He was a pipe smoker and went from an active man to one who could barely breath after they removed his adams apple and 1/4 of the tissue underneath his tounge. It ONLY took 1 year and he was gone. A sad and painfull experience. However the addiction was stronger than the will. As of 26th November I have not touched 1 Ciggie. Smoked the last in the pack and just did not look back, and actually I can´t say why it was so easy. It could have been the great info from oscarsear [Y][Y]and the fear that I could be at the beginning of emphysema. No cravings and it dosent even bother me when someone else smokes. My wife still smokes but not nearly as much as before and is starting to curb down. Let me add that I enjoyed smoking and started every day with at least 3 coffie and 5 ciggies, without this I just couldent wake up. Thanks fellow Klipschers for the motivation!!!! Oh and the best time to stop is NOW, including stress, weekends, going out with the buddies/buddetes and all of the other excuses. I think I am allowed to say this because I was on the same bandwagon!!! Blame everything else but yourself and you will never get rid of this addiction. To everyone quitting now, hang in there! It is a lot better to spend the extra money and time say investing in a new piece of equipment, or taking a loved one to dinner than investing in a oxygen trolley just so you can breathe while walking from the kitchen to living room. Yeips, 2 x 500W that is a bruiser. You are correct about the 17000 pre installed enhancement modes. I´ve found that enhanced (DTS) and Music enhanced 2 and 7 channel modes work for me. I think this is the most fun about this hobby, finding out what flavors go best with which music/DVD. There is still a lot to explore and I am at the begining of my journey, I cant wait to see where this ends up. If I win the lottery here in Germany (now at about 46 million €) I think I will be the first person in Germany with a complete 7.2 Surround sytem using Jubes [<)] Yeah dream on!!! Ran

Hello to all and thanks for the input and kind remarks!!! I am very happy with the Yamaha and now that I found out what the problem is it is the bees knees. The problem was my DVD player (RTFM DAU) upon buying the new amp I thought I would also upgrade the cables and use the digital coax output. Went then into the configuration of the DVD and set it to PCM (again RTFM DAU), thus I lost my multichannel output. So I finally RTFM set the digital output to both and volia I have Surround sound in DTS. muhahahahah. Since Michael said about test tones I remembered a DVD that my loving wife bought me when we got our Samsung Flat. It is from "Heimkino" (Home Theater Magazine) and has different tests for Video and AUDIO. I think I am on the right track. So tests will be done, the tracks are using pink noise and are bieng explained easily. First polarity check, then leveling, then distance to listening position. The last 2 checks are sending a clap to adjust the delay and with a little tweaking it sounded like you were sitting in the middle of a theater and about 200 people were clapping at the same time, then the same test with pink noise. There is also a bass sweep on the DVD that starts at about 210 and goes down to 0. I did this test 6 times and tried to get when the F3´s stopped and then blended the Sub-12 to pick up the rest. This is about 46 to 43 since the dial on the Sub-12 does not show exactly where it is at a little above 1/2 for the gain. Installation results Yamaha Fronts/Center=Large, Surround=Small, LFE=Both, Crossover=120 (This was done before the manual tweaking using YPAO I might play around a bit and try others). EQ is set to Natural. All tests done and tried another DVD where I knew there was good rear movement. X-Men 2, 1st test the beginning where Nightcrawler is infiltrating the Whitehouse. Woooo doggie, the shots and the "pufffff" of when he teleports just about scared the bejesus out of me. Next is when they are flying through the tornados and there is a lot of lows bieng pushed through the speakers. Eureka, I have surround!!!!!! Am I happy? Yes Synergie F3 Full surround 1000 € + RX-V1800= 900€ = a whole new listening experience for under 2000 €. Thanks to all, Ran PS: It is unfair though that I auditioned the Yamaha in Media Markt´s new Sound treated demo room using 6 RF-83´s, 1 RC-64 and 2 RW12´s. I am very happy this would not fit into our appartment. [bs] Although I could possibly squeeze 2 RF-83´s up front.[^o)] They are only 1500 € a pop.

Still trying to figure some of the things out, the handbook helps but trial and error is more my speed. I am new to this fancy newfangled surround stuff, and my learing curve is more a circle so it could take a while to get everything how I want it (if it is how it should be that could be another story). Everything sounds great in 2 ch., good imaging and soundstage but in surround is something else. All internal tests are measuring good but when a movie is playing (Transporter 1 or 2) I dont feel the surround channels are as present as they should be. It could be my DVD so I will be studying the books (and websight) and seeing where the problem lies. Ran
