  1. Hi Tom, I agree with you that some of the records we possess are not really that fantastic, even after repeatedly using a record cleaning machine. Most of my records are purchased 2nd/3rd etc. hand and will exhibit surface noise due to the numerous nicks and minor scratches across the record surface from misuse by previous owners. I have heard of some previous owners of vinyl here using cooking oil to wash the records or even using a Scotch-brite pad to scrub it down....ouch. I believe the Technics TT you are referring to is the SP-10mk2. Real heavy monster mainly used in broadcasting stations of yesteryear. There has been a renewed interest in this model in recent years. You can find out more about your Technics 1200 and the SP-10 at http://mark.kouts.home.mindspring.com/technics.htm ------------------ My system
  2. Hi Tom, Glad to know that your V15VxMR has improved. Regarding the surface noise, do you periodically clean the needle with the stylus brush provided by Shure? I use the Audio Technica stylus cleaning fluid once in a while too. My V15VxMR is already a year and a half old and still as silent as it was when new. quote: Originally posted by tblasing: I bought a Shure V15VxMR about a month ago and it was very bass heavy for the first 30-40 hours or so. Now it's setteling down to a nice neutral tone. I did notice, however that it has a little more surface noise than when it was new. Maybe the bass was drowning it out. ------------------ My system
  3. Hi Mike, Have not heard this amp before, but here are links to 2 reviews by a Malaysian HiFi website: http://thestar.com.my/audio/story.asp?file=/1999/4/15menth http://thestar.com.my/audio/story.asp?file=/1999/1/07menthor ----------------- My system This message has been edited by Weiming on 03-10-2002 at 05:07 AM
  4. I use a camera lens blower. Cheap, lasting, re-usable and does the job. For oxidised contacts and stuff, Caig DeOxit and ProGold is a must! Caig website This message has been edited by Weiming on 03-04-2002 at 02:14 AM
  5. I have never heard this CD player before so I cannot comment on its performance with regards to classical music, but it really looks good and it has a tubed output stage. http://www.shanling.com/html/CD-T100e.htm This message has been edited by Weiming on 03-01-2002 at 10:47 AM
  6. Well, when one purchases a new car or bike, there is a need for it to be broken in over 1000km as stated in the manual. Same goes for a phono cartridge because of the mechanical components in it. Even cone speaker units benefit from breaking in. Anyway, just continue using it and see if there is a change for the better. If not, then probably the cartridge is not synergistic with the rest of your setup. quote: Originally posted by tblasing: OH NOOO!! Could there be another heated debate?? Phono cartridges need to be broke in too! Thanks guys...
  7. Hi Tom, I encountered the same when I first mounted my V15VxMR. Sounded very bass heavy compared to the Yamaha cartridge I was using but the bass heaviness disappeared after a few days of running in. Give it a few days and see if it improves. ------ My Setup
  8. Sometimes I wonder about the logic in spending like so. However, I rationalize it this way. This is a hobby, so spending insane amounts of money to derive a shred/sliver of contentment & enjoyment is worth it Actually, US$2000 total can be used to purchase all the hardware required to delve into vinyl (Rega P3, Rotel RQ, KAB EV and carbon fiber brush) I guess it depends on how much one is willing to spend. Some people make do with US$500 CD players while others spend US$20,000 on a Linn Sondek CD player. Others spend thousands on cables while others spend the minimum on cabling. It is all up to an individual. quote: Originally posted by Randy Bey: Ahh, it's nice to know that only about $2000 for a TT plus a few hundred more for a phono preamp and a few hundred more for a record cleaner can put you in vinyl heaven! Then start snarfing up all those great Christian albums available at the Goodwill! After a half hour of cleaning sit down and enjoy twenty minutes of bliss.... Gee, where do I sign up? How is it that I haven't done this yet?
  9. Hi Chris, I did the exact same thing! I had 30 LPs before I got my TT Ok, this is my take on your questions :- 1. I believe in cleaning all LPs I purchased using my KAB EV-1 cleaner. You can view it here at KAB EV-1 After cleaning, I will put the cleaned LPs in new VRP rice paper sleeves. For maintenance, I use a Hunt EDA carbon fiber brush to remove surface dust from the LP I am about to play. These steps help keep the LPs clean and static-free and protect the needle on the cartridge. 2. The paper sleeves are ok, but I also use the Discwasher VRP rice paper sleeves. You can view them at VRP 3. Can't help here as my TT is itself >20 years old and still going strong I think for US$2000, one can get a really excellent table that will keep one satisfied. 4. Cheap phono stages are the NAD PP-1 or ProJect Phonobox (around US$100?). These are really lacking but they are a good for the budget-conscious. The best budget dedicated phono stage is the Rotel RQ-970 (around US$200?). Then there will be the Creek unit, the Lehmann Black Cube, EAR unit etc etc. Quite a lot of phono stages in the market actually. Can't help in choosing one as I am still using a NAD as I am planning on constructing my own based on the DACT phonostage. 5. If you have any questions regarding vinyl, most probably it has been covered in the Vinyl Asylum. Just do a search on the topic you are interested in and be prepared to read Hope the above helps. -------- My System
  10. Hi Wolfram, The Cayin amps look surprisingly like the Audio Space amps that are made in Hong Kong. Just attended our local annual hifi show and got this catalogue from the local dealer, Audio 88. This brand is quite well received in Singapore. The Mini-Houston 1998 is real tiny and it cost around US$700 here. Never heard it in detail before so I can't help you there!
  11. Hi Mike, I think you cannot go wrong with the Foreplay. It is a good introduction to kit building and the Bottlehead forum is a lot like the Klipsch. Full of activity and sharing! The Foreplay is easy to build and you can do all sorts of upgrades on it if desired.
  12. I agree with what mobile homeless has said. I was previously using a YBA solid state amp (45 watts into 8 and 90 into 4) with my Cornwall Is. It sounded ok, but nothing fantastic. It was only after I put in a pair of Paraglows that the Cornwalls came alive. Mind you, I was getting mindblowing levels from all the 2.5 watts the amps had to offer. The Cornwalls rocked, they jazzed, they vocalized... I can confidently say that my hifi journey is now at an end.
  13. Hi dougdrake2, You are observant Yes, it is a modified Flexy that I built around 2 years ago. Here is how it looks like when I completed it. quote: Originally posted by dougdrake2: Weiming - Is that the world famous Flexyrack I see in the background?? DD2
  14. Hi fini, Actually, the Cornwalls are not mounted sideways. It's just that the picture is rotated 45 degrees clockwise that's why it appears as it does I don't think it is possible to mount these monsters on the wall quote: Originally posted by fini: Weiming, I've heard that Cornwalls with vertical horns sound better, but mounting them sideways on the wall? How'd ya do that? fini
  15. Hi Jon, I have no idea what colour mine are, but they are attached here for your viewing pleasure. I am guessing that I am one of the few if not the only one here in Singapore owning a pair of Cornwalls! Love the speakers but I am itching to try Al K.'s Cornwall crossovers. Will probably do that in the future...
  16. Hi Cornwalled! Your Cornwalls and mine are siblings My serial numbers are 29W671 and 29W672! All I know is that our bass drivers are not the AlNiCo ones but the "mud" ones. Your midrange is circular while your tweeter is a rectangle correct? Does anybody know what drivers we have? Thanks!
  17. Hey Al! Thanks for the clarification! Drats...now I am really tempted to try out your xovers! If I am desperate enough, I guess I could order online, although the shipping cost will probably kill me Do you know of any online store that has all the major components so I can save on shipping? BTW, the B2 xover I have has the T2A correct? Thanks! Weiming.
  18. Hi Al, Thanks for the schematic! I was planning on building your crossovers, but I have problems obtaining the parts here in Singapore and I am not sure my amps can handle a 4 ohm load. Weiming.
  19. Hey JJT! Glad you are satisfied with your Cornwalls! I too own a pair of these speakers, serial no. 29W671 and 72, so that makes our speakers more or less siblings! Welcome to the club Weiming.
  20. Hi Randy, I am not using the Bottlehead 300B amp, but the 2A3 Paraglows instead. 2.5 watts only, but they are able to drive my Cornwall Is close to ear-bleeding levels. I have hit SPLs of 102 dB easily if I am not careful with the volume control of my Foreplay The Paraglows replaced my YBA power amp. The YBA was my reference amp till the Paraglows came along. Cost a lot less too! And it is mostly stock so far except for a revised grounding scheme I implemented. I think Kent120 in this forum uses the Bottlehead 300B Afterglows with a pair of vintage Heresy Is, so he might give you a better perspective on using 300Bs. Weiming.
  21. Hi, A 50ohm volume pot varies from 0 to 50ohm I think. But I have never seen a 50ohm pot before. I have seen 50k, 75k, 100k. The way it works is that at 0 ohm, the volume will be the softest while at 50 ohm, it will be loudest. Input / > (50 ohm, loudest) < <--- wiper switch > < (0 ohm, softest) / Ground Weiming.
  22. Hi Bob, Err...how do I get Trey's email address? Can't seem to find it under the Inside Klipsch heading. Weiming.
  23. Does anybody have the crossover schematic of the original B2 crossover of the Cornwall Is? I am planning on upgrading the components and mounting the crossover externally. Thanks! Weiming.
  24. Hi Colin, Excellent job on the review! I really enjoyed reading it. I am using a pair of Paraglows with the Cornwall Is and it is really a synergistic match. I would say the Paramours are the same too! Weiming.
  25. Hi Kent! quote: Originally posted by kent120: Nice system! I also use my Klipsch with bottlehead gears:-) Did you use step down transformer for your foreplay and Paraglow? I will face the same problem in the future when I return to Malaysia, so please share your experience:-) Kent No, I am not using a step down transformer. My Foreplay is using the Black Art transformer. The Pglows are using the De Young universal transformers. Doc B now packages the Magnequest PGP8.2s for those living in countries with 220-240V supplies. Would love to try the Jensens, but they are real costly. I am actually using Solens in my Foreplay and Pglows. My Cornwalls came with rebuilt crossovers, also with Solen caps. Might be too much of a good thing Weiming.
