I think those 160s are too high anyway, they should be somewhat in line with the center.

They are pretty close but maybe centered on the space between the horns and the woofers on the RP-160Ms would be a bit better.

  2. @Njpurvis28,

    Welcome to the forum.

My first outboard amp was a B&K Reference 4430 and I used it to drive my RF-63s/RC-64 LCR.  Liked the combo so much I added an EX4420 to drive the pair of 63s while the REF 4430 powered the RC-64 and surrounds.  Eventually moved on to Acurus but my time with B&K was very enjoyable.  Also owned a couple of PT-3 preamp/tuners and they were rock solid as well.

I have an ST125.2 paired with my RF3s and I really enjoy it. Woke the speakers up a lot and I feel helped with the brightness.

B&K uses(used) mosfet outboard transistors which tend to add a "warmness" to the presentation where bipolar transistors are a bit more transparent.

Curious as to why they went out of business?

I don't think they were a big player in the business and got pushed aside when the likes of less expensive Emotiva, Outlaw Audio, etc. solidified their market share.  Hard to compete with the internet direct companies when they(B&K) rely on a network of dealers to peddle their goods.  B&K build quality was never an issue as well as their product support.  They may have just lost their way.  ATI scooped them up but don't think they really supported them the way they deserved.

Probably yes. Those RP160s are great speakers, but bookshelf speakers have a hard time keeping up with towers, especially if you like it loud. Your RF62 are pretty good speakers also.

I would definitely give it a try, you have nothing to lose.

True, nothing to lose but time to do it.

On the other hand, move the RF-62s to another room for a banging stereo rig.  They are very capable speakers for 2 channel and HT.

Looks like I can get about 10cm of air between the wall and the rear port if I use the wall-mounts I have, is that horrible?

That is plenty of room for the ports to breathe with those speakers.  Now if we were talking the RP-8000F floorstanders, then yes 10cm might be a bit too close to the wall.

I don't necessarily understand the different DAC chips between equipment.  So my Denon DCD-1600NE has PCM1795 (192kHz/32bit).  My Parasound P6 192 kHz / 24-bit PCM over COAX or SPDIF.  My Bluesound Node 2 has 32-Bit, 192kHz.  My question is should I just use the onboard DAC on the Denon SACD player, or should I use digital out to either my preamp or my Bluesound DAC?

Truthfully, the only way to know which you like better is to try it out in different configurations.  It's not just about the DAC chip and implementation but also about the analog stages and other factors.  My Yamaha CD-S1000 has the PCM1796(192kHz/24bit) which is +/- 95% same as the PCM1795 but with 24bit vs 32bit.

  6. Never owned or heard the Yamaha A-S801 but have read really good things about it.  Though they are similar but in a different line of Yamaha integrated amps, the A-S1000(all analog) that I own pairs very well with all speakers(RB-75, RF-63, Heresy 1, Heresy 2) I have demoed with.  Very neutral "natural" presentation with gobs of grunt and very balanced top to bottom.

If I were to bet, the 801 will mate very well with the Cornwall 1s.  On the other hand, since you already have a nice DAC, look for one of their analog integrated amps(A-S1000, A-S2000, A-S1100, etc).

I've settled on the Klipsch RP-280FA and RP-450C. Even though they're a few years old

So are my RF-63s and RC-64 and I have found no reason to go newer.

Your decision with the RP-280FA/RP-450C combo should be pretty solid.

What I'm looking for is some suggestions for an AV receiver; there are just so many options out there. I'll primarily be using the system for music, movies, and TV shows, and I'm not super interested in surround sound or pairing it with a sub right now.

You do know that the RP-280FAs are Atmos enabled and Atmos and surround sound go hand in hand?  Action movies will be on the dull side without a subwoofer.

With that said, I usually suggest at minimum an upper midlevel AVR with multichannel preouts for possible future outboard amplification.

I am close to making a purchase of Heresy IV speakers and was looking for some amplifier  advice (good quality and fairly priced).  I am leaning towards NAD M10 since it incorporates streaming support.  Look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts...

I bet that NAD is nice and am very fond of NAD gear, but I really don't think you "need" to spend anywhere close to that amount to get quality sound and feature set.

This Yamaha network stereo receiver gets very high praise for sound quality, feature set, and affordability.

do I still change the setting on receiver to preamp and just plug the rears in and let it rip ?

I'm not quite sure. I added an external amp to a Yamaha and it was active upon plugging it in, nothing to switch, but I wasn't powering additional speakers from the AVR.

I have a preamp processor now but when I was using an Onkyo and then NAD AVR, no changes in the settings were required to activate the preamp section.

    Denon AVRs may be different.

Just came across your post, just purchased a near mint Acurus A125 to mate with my Denon X4700... Interested to hear more about your set up... I am running the same RF5's and RC7, and RS3's for the surrounds

@LyleS has not posted in close to 2 years so I will give it a shot.

I have owned many Acurus amps(A100, A100x3, A150, A150, A200, A200, A200x3, 200x3, A250, A250, 200FIVE, 200FIVE), over the last 10 or so years and have been very pleased with their performance and reliability.  Cool running, great bass drive, very detailed.  I have used them for stereo playback as well as currently using an Acurus A200/A200x3/NAD T175HD combo with my RF-63/RC-64/RS-35s combo.  No reason to change a thing anytime soon.

That Acurus A125x5/Denon X4700 combo should bring you much joy.
