  1. I'm hoping for a "common man's" Palladium. Maybe a KLF/Ref. 3-Way hybrid of some sort. Bill
  2. Is it better for your main speakers to be full range? Yes. Is it necessary? No. Most a/v receivers amp section have to work harder when called on to reproduce low frequencies. When you add a subwoofer to the mix, the receiver sends a signal to the subs amp to reproduce those low, low frequencies therefore giving the avr a break so it can handle the rest of it's duties. Let the sub do what it is designed to do. Bill
  3. Welcome to the forum. If I were to give you a "knee-jerk" answer I would say no to in-walls. I have not demoed any in-wall's but if I was to recommemd any I would say the THX line. Personally, I suggest you find another Quartet or an Acadamy for your center channel. Post your general location and we will help you find one near you area. Bill
  4. Welcome to the forum. First and foremost, what is your budget for speakers? How big is your room? Post your location so other forum members can help locate gear for sale in your area. Your HK would work fine for any of the ref. series. If you think you want some more oomph, add an outboard amp later. Bill PS--Nice TV
  5. Hey Bill, Happy housewarming. Great score on the Samsung. I paid $950.00 for a 37" 550 series last September. It was a great price up until about 3 months ago. Patience pays off. These Samsung lcd's have great pictures and as you mentioned easy to set up and navigate. Bill
  6. You will love them with your Marantz. How chipped is chipped? If we are talking less than 1/4", I suggest you get a Sharpie if finish is black and a set(different shades of brown) of furniture repair markers if WO,WL,OO,OL. If finish is WO or OO, get a bottle of Formby's lemon oil and apply every 4-6 weeks. For laquer finishes, a very damp cloth should do the trick. I am not a wood finish expert but these suggestions work well for me. Bill
  7. While Marantz has a reputation for having a great amp section, Onkyo's seem to have more features and a very good amp section(upper models dual push-pull). I use an Onkyo TX-SR705 that I have owned for two years without a single problem at all. It takes everything I throw at it. I have it hooked up to a 3 channel 200w/ch B&K that really rocks my RF-63's and RC-64 for music and movies. I was considering changing to a Marantz SR6003 for mainly 2-channel and then backed off after I bought a vintage Marantz 2252b stereo receiver. It now powers my Forte's in a spare bedroom. Instead of changing receivers in my main setup, I bought an Onkyo DV-SP1000 player(discontinued) for all disks except BD and HD-DVD. I am using the player's analog outs for CD's in 2-channel instead of a digital coax and letting the player's better DACs do the converting. This change has made a tremendous difference in 2 channel music in my family room. As far as movies, this player makes dvd's look like BD's and the sound like DDTrueHD and DTSMA. No joke. I never new regular dvd's could sound this good. Bill
  8. You read my mind. The Luxman is in really good shape and plays wonderfully. It even sounds good hooked up to the Pioneer CS-B5000 floorstanders the seller threw in. I will let the speakers go for $30.00/pair on CL or sell to my co-worker to reduce the cost of the Luxman to $70.00. I have not hooked the receiver up to my Forte's(test run only) yet in fear I might just like the combination and not want to sell the Luxman. I don't think it will bump the Marantz out of it's rightful place though. Bill
  9. You are correct. The video is just shy of spectacular. I worked in the yard all day yesterday in 95 degree/90% humidity and chose not to go with family and friends to see fireworks last night. Glad I didn't because my wife said the crowds were crazy and they really did not enjoy themselves. During my time alone, I watched "Master and Commander" on plain ole DVD and was blown away by the visual clarity and reg. DTS 5.1 sounded as good as DTSMA. I have been using my Toshiba HD-A30 for reg. DVD's(which upconverts very well) until now. This Onkyo has permanantly replaced it for DVD's and CD's. I can't wait to get a couple of DVD-A's and SACD's and try them out. Bill
  10. Thanks all for your replies. I called the guy and he said he did not have any of those but he is the original owner. He is throwing in a pair of older woodgrain Pioneer speakers in good shape. He did not specify model. Bill
  11. Looking at a Luxman R-115 stereo receiver(70w/channel). Seller wants $100.00. Pictures and ad indicate very nice condition with everything functioning properly. Any opinions, experience, etc. will be appreciated. Thanks, Bill
  12. Welcome to the forum. If you are using the F-3's as mains, cut your hole now and make room for the C-3. You need to buy this now. http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/features/548208218/klipsch-c3 Great price, great merchant, perfect tonal match. Bill
  13. My vote is for the KG4's. They will sound great with your Marantz 2252b. I had the same setup until I recently sold my KG4's(needed funds for my Forte's) to Clermontcop. They sounded good with my Onkyo receiver but the Marantz took them to another dimension. Bill
  14. My new toy arrived today. It's a universal player that plays all discs except BD or HD-DVD. I bought on Ebay a display model with a plexiglass top to show the guts of the player. Real cool. CD's sound great with analog 2 channel. The Wolfson DACS on board are light years better than those on board my BD player or HD-DVD player. Have not listen to with a digital coax yet to let my Onkyo receiver do the DA converting. I am moving my HD-DVD player to my bedroom and will use the Onkyo player in my main system for all discs except BD. This player is a tank weighing in at 26.7 pounds. Overbuilt is an understatement. It is a discontinued model that can be found new or used for $300.00 to $500.00. I won the bid for $299.00 with shipping. Anyone know a good place to find SACD's or DVD Audio discs?
  15. From your post, I am not sure if you are talking about buying the RF-83's or RF-63's. If he will sell his floor model 83's for $1600.00, then you better jump on it before someone else gets them. Now if you are talking about the 63's for $1600.00, that is not a "great" price. Better than retail but not great. As far as running an RC-62 with the RF-63's, not a perfect match but not bad either. I had that configuration for over a year before I bought my RC-64. Now I have a perfectly seamless front soundstage. You did not mention how much the RF-82's are for sale. FWIW, the RF-82 is without a doubt the best bang for the buck in the reference line. Stellar performance at a good price point. For a little more $$$, take a look at this option. http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrfull&1250810335&/Klipsch-rf-63--rc-64--rs-62-ch Bill
  16. I am a B&K fan. Here is another option if your Marantz alone(option 1), then your Marantz and an outboard amp(option 2), just doesn't do it. Remember, try option 1 first then option 2. http://www.bkcomp.com/products/preamp-receivers/?tx_ttproducts_pi1%5BbackPID%5D=22&tx_ttproducts_pi1%5Bproduct%5D=11&cHash=4a85173845 with this http://www.bkcomp.com/products/amplifiers/?tx_ttproducts_pi1%5BbackPID%5D=14&tx_ttproducts_pi1%5Bproduct%5D=10&cHash=f7aaf13d9a All the bell's and whistles and a lot of clean power. Bill
  17. What shortstack31489 said. My Onkyo sends a signal(with rca connections) from the left, right , center preouts to the B&K amp to power my front soundstage(left-center-right). The Onkyo uses it's surround channel built in amps to power the surrounds. There is a sub pre-out rca connection on the Onkyo to send a signal to my subwoofer's amp section. Your Marantz will have the same thing but probably in a different place. Bill
  18. I said if once you get the Marantz hooked up to your RF-83's, take an objective listen and then decide if it is lacking. When I felt like my Onkyo really did not have enough oomp to run my whole setup, I bought a used B&K 200w 3-channel amp and the difference was astonishing. The Onkyo had enough juice for most 2 channel applications with my RF-63's, but it lacked noticeably with all channels running. My Onkyo works great as a preamp and running my surrounds. I firmly believe your Marantz with it's better power supply and preamp section would run circles around my Onkyo. Bill
  19. MistaChy, Your system profile says RF-83's(coming soon). Have you actually received your RF-83's and hooked them up to your Marantz yet? If not, wait. The "synergy" between the Marantz and the 83's may be great. It is your hard earned $$$ to spend but I would wait and listen first. If then you feel it is lacking, add a 3, 5, or 7 channel amp for some boost. I believe the 8002 would make a great preamp for maybe another Marantz amp or any other quality amp. Bill
  20. Synergy defined from Wikipedia. Synergy (from the Greek syn-ergos, συνεργ?ς meaning working together) is the term used to describe a situation where different entities cooperate advantageously for a final outcome. Simply defined, it means that the whole is greater than the sum of the individual parts. Although the whole will be greater than each individual part, this is not the concept of synergy. If used in a business application it means that teamwork will produce an overall better result than if each person was working toward the same goal individually. A dynamic state in which combined action is favored over the sum of individual component actions. The RC-64 was designed from the ground up to work in conjunction with either the RF-63's or the RF-83's. It is not mandatory that you upgrade to the RC-64, but IMHO you will hear a difference. Bill
  21. If you want "complete" synergy in your system, then the answer is definitely yes. I just upgraded from a 62 to a 64 to match my 63's and there is a difference. Don't get me wrong, the RC-62 is a fantastic center channel. The RC-64 added more depth and refinement and is perfectly tonally matched to the RF-63's and 83's as well. Bill
  22. I have a pair of RSX-4's running with RF-63's and an RC-64. I don't feel they are lacking at all. Would a pair of RS-52's or 62's be better? Yes, but for now these little speakers sound great. Just MHO. Bill
