  1. My 2 cents; I lived w/a new pair of GPA 902-8's over the summer. I first crossed them at 600Hz, 1st order network. I didn't have to turn things up too loud before I heard low end distortion from the driver. Went to a 2nd order at 700Hz, problem solved. So in my experience with new GPA-902's, I would not recommend crossing them over too low, depending on your networks. Also, they sounded much better w/high-end compensation, wasn't even a contest. Disclaimer, my system and environment (both 511 and trachorn), YMMV.
  2. Looking good. What did you sand with between the coats of poly?
  3. This is better than the movies. Keep 'em coming!
  4. My A's will definitely give you a warmer sound, as compared to the stock A's or AA's, because I've dropped the level of the squawker a bit. Listening to your stock crossovers will give you a good idea of what you're looking for. I'll get some pics to you tonight.
  5. I have a pair of type A's (just built this summer) for sale, if you're interested. I dropped the squawker tap down -3db, changed the mid x-over cap appropriately, balance sounds best to me, a little less hot in the mids. I'm messing with some different high-end drivers, so no longer need the A's. If you listen to low to moderately loud volumes, the A's (IMO) sound best. If you really crank it, extreme slopes are better (and pricier). $130.00 for the pair. Let me know if you'd like pics. Re-capping your AA's is the cheapest way to go, and will yield good results.
  6. I've transfered money from paypal to my savings account, and I'm not aware of any fees associated with that transaction. One recommendation; open a separate bank account for receiving your paypal funds, and don't use your main checking account. A friend of mine had her bank account compromised via paypal. It happened quite a while ago (security has probably tightened), and she did recover her funds, but it was a bit of a scare for a while.
  7. Yup, I remember the days when "aluminum" and "high" meant punching holes in a soda can... So it seems enough people are using the eminence, jbl, and beyma tweeters - maybe I'll be a pioneer and try the ciare They're on backorder, so maybe that means it's a sought after tweet.
  8. Did a forum search, found nothing on this driver. Anyone have experience with this tweeter? Aluminum sounds nice up high.
  9. Yes, from Italy no doubt, as it's marked "fragile" (pronounced frah-gee-lay)
  10. Thanks for talking me down. In all seriousness, I am very happy with my 2a3's - it's been a while since I've felt the upgrade bug (at least in the preamp/amp dept.). I'm sure that will change once I've "finished" messing around with my speakers, though.
  11. I Currently own both 2A3s and 45 Monoblocks. Both Welbornes - Moondogs and Starchiefs. The 45s are my Main listening amps. Nuff said! Stop encouraging my 45 envy, I'm too poor for this nonsense.
  12. I'd like to hear the DRD 45 myself. I've yet to live with a 45 based amp, maybe down the road.
  13. I've had a pair myself for a while, $850 used, still love 'em. They can definitely get loud when need be, and stay clean sounding. I've only run them with either 2nd or 1st order x-overs, though. My preference is 1st order, so I usually keep listening levels reasonable, but with higher slopes, I think these amps would keep up (within reason).
  14. I haven't heard these, but it sounds like you want to stick with SET (I'm in that camp as well). Even though you're hesitant about 2a3, the Wright 3.5's have a good bit of headroom, george claims 8 watts of musical power, and there is a pair of 2a3's on Audiogon right now, pretty reasonable price.
  15. Haven't tried any of the Wright 300B offerings, but his 2A3 amps are anything but bass shy. I imagine the 300B's do as well down low.
  16. There's a theory that early exposure to animals (pets, farm, etc) and their associated (relative) filth actually prevents allergies. Well, that would explain things - too much clean livin' early on. Back on topic: Am I the only 'net geek on this board, or are lolcats played out? I think it's played out, although "I has your grandma" still makes me laugh. OT, there's a new (to me) website where people hold up album covers, and integrate themselves into it link to examples I can't remember the website, have to look it up when I get home.
  17. OK, so your saying that if your running, say, 1st order crossovers, leave a little bandwidth between the x-over point and the horns lower limit. The steeper the slope, the closer you can cross to the horn cut-off without the risk of damage to the driver.
  18. What I got from his post is the steeper the slope, the lower frequency you can run before damaging the driver. Because the decay is more rapid. I may have missed that all together. Yes, that's true. But I believe he was also saying that the horn can provide some relief to the driver by it's loading characteristics (would this be acoustical loading?). Say you run the k-55 w/the 400 horn crossed at 400hz w/ a first order filter. The k-55 run with the same crossover will see more low freq energy when run with the trachorn because it doesn't provide the same loading to the driver. Not sure if I have this right or not
  19. Don, are you saying that the horn, depending on it's lower freq. cut-off, actually acts as a filter (by loading the driver) and can protect the driver (somewhat) from low freq energy? I'd still like to know if you can change the bandwidth displayed on that Behringer.
  20. I would think any one-inch driver would poop out before reaching down to 300Hz. I'm still amazed the little k-55 is usable down to 400hz. There is a lot of info on the Behringer over at the Lansing Heritage Forum I haven't weeded through it all, but will do so soon, as that unit might be a fairly inexpensive way to get some measurements.
  21. D, what are your options as far as scaling on that unit? Could you, say check response from 500 to 5k, and change your output scale to give more resolution?
  22. Yeah, hay (and my cats) get to me too....and just about every other type of allergen. I would've made a lousy farmer.
  23. Love the Gamelan orchestra, monkey chant's amazing as well. We had a Balinese troup come and perform a shadpw puppet play (large scale, puppets, people, and incredible backgrounds), accompanied by a live gamelan orchestra. Easily one of the top ten best shows I've ever seen.
  24. Ha, that's what my father used to say (he grew up on a farm) until they took in a stray. They've had the cat for 8 years now, and if it's not waking him up at 5:oo in the morning, he feels bad. Nice cats, DTLongo; are they siblings? We have two sisters (14years old), and they still fight with each other....at least as long as we're around (jealous cats). We love 'em to death - and they only scratch their scratching post (go figure).
  25. In fact you were corrected this morning. Yes, but where's the directness and fingerpointing? Sorry, my post was a bit tongue-in-cheek, directed toward the tone of some posts. The thanks was genuine though.
