  2. Shawn, have you seen what theEar has built?
  3. Got the little guys this afternoon and gave a few quick listens from the stock computer sound card using itunes. It makes me realize just how far backwards music has gone. I can literally hear every flaw in a song at 128 kbps... Now, granted, I have no way of telling if the flaw is from when the song is originally recorded or if it arose from when it underwent compression. Also, I tried switching from using the sound card headphone jack over to my promedia 2.1's jack. It emphasized certain things slightly better, but when there was no music and the volume was adjusted to listening volume, there was an overwhelming background hiss. Nevertheless, I can tell now that I have a long road ahead as far as finding what I'm really satisfied with... Don't get me wrong, these 'phones are fantastic, but the battle is uphill as far as source and amplification goes, I'd think. Anyway, I await my ipod and amp in the mail. It never ends! Also, and I direct this question to whomever already owns custom-3s or ideally, professor Thump: Which EQ settings are ideal? I had it set to rock but to me the frequencies which were adjusted higher seemed out of whack. I've got it set at "flat" right now and it actually sounds good to me. But what do I know?
  4. Just bit the bullet on a pair of custom-3s for use with an 80GB ipod classic. Needless to say, I'm stoked! I plan on using it in synergy with a Portable Amp 2 Version 2 built by "Gary" (http://www.electric-avenues.com/), specifically for walking around campus all day. I doubt the PA2V2 will sound as delicious as the Rudistor amps at the pilgrimage, but it should be an improvement over the puny stock ipod amp nonetheless. They should be at home tonight as I felt the need to pay $18 [:'(] for Amazon to ship them to me overnight. Oh well, not every decision can be a good one... I'll post some pics of me "sticking it in my ear" and give some initial impressions as soon as possible... You can all thank Prof. Thump for getting me hooked!
  5. As the consensus has already voted, I also would vote to not mount any of the front three speakers in the ceiling. I heard the THX2 (read: high-end) in ceiling system playing a clip from "Robots" at the 08' pilgrimage, and my final thoughts were "yup....that sound is totally coming from the ceiling." It was honestly my least favorite demo of the day, as I found the sound to be almost unbearably misplaced. It could also have to do with the fact that I wanted to hear the Palladium P-39Fs that were in the same room and I was getting impatient. [A] That said, rear in ceilings actually sound great, imo, and place most movie effects very nicely.
  6. yes, posting pics will definitely help the identification process.
  7. Those look quite minty.... What year are they?
  8. I've continutally heard the Palladium vs. Heritage discussion and yet I still believe it to be like comparing speed boats to catfish sandwiches... there is just a world of difference in the approach taken between the two series, while the end result is very very similar (Maybe you hit a catfish with the boat? heh). In any event, the Palladiums deserve a look at any price.
  9. guys, guys, GUYS! I have one solution that will solve ALL our problems: Or if you must stick to beer, I'll pick the best from JB's list:
  10. How many ways can I express.... *JEALOUSY* ?!?!?!? Nice choice on the finish, I might add. As for usage, I definitely vote that they get showcased in their own two-channel set up, either with some sweet tubeage or a nice SS. I'm willing to bet they will sound otherworldy on just about anything.
  11. I agree with almost everything he has to say, and agree heartily at that. However, his one comment threw me for a loop: "Generally, when you go up in price, you are going down in size (unless you are buying on the Internet in which case you're going to have to knock out a wall). This is a good thing. Subs are hard enough to deal with so I say the smaller the better." Now, having heard the XW-300d in action, I can't disagree entirely... But come on, everyone knows that to acheive subsonic pleasure at 18 hertz and below, a 15" driver (or larger) coupled to as beefy an amp as possible is really where it's at.
  12. Yes, how has that SVS sub been treating you these past five years?? [8-)][8-)]
  13. I must say Travis, it was the ultimate irony to see you win those Palladium bookshelves when just an hour and a half prior we were discussing what a battle it is to acquire nice gear. I admit, I wouldn't have minded winning them! May I recommend this particular finish?
  14. Oh man, that conversation is pure gold! That emphasizes so well just how mislead the average member of the general public is as far as audio quality. "Works fine" and "good enough" are the key terms that are used. If only they would wake up and find out just how subjective those ideas really are.
  15. Apparently the white van "speakerguys" are serious. Have a look at their "official" website. http://www.genesismedialabs.com/ Is it any surprise that their flagship $2,599/piece floorstanding speakers use an "optimized horn tweeter"? [] You'd think that such fraudulent business practices would attract the SEC, FCC, BBB, IRS, FDA, and the FAA. In that order!
  16. http://cgi.ebay.com/G-608-HOME-THEATER-SURROUND-SOUND-AUDIO-SPEAKER-SYSTEM_W0QQitemZ170218600135QQihZ007QQcategoryZ32861QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Some of you guys around here have probably seen these on ebay in the past and simply ignored them, but I was drawn in momentarily and made the realization of just how blatantly criminal this stuff is. $249.99 gets you four "full range" tower speakers, a center channel and an integrated subwoofer/ reciever, which has no recognizable digital inputs of any kind. The system specifications look accurate, though. Accurately HORRIBLE! Sensitivity: (1W-1M): 86dB Total Harmonic 10% at 25W / 8 ohms [] Subwoofer Frequency Range: 150 Hz ~ 180 Hz.... wow. There's plenty more hilarity in that ad alone, but their little "Buy from Us" paragraph next to a logo of the "Fair Business Association of America" ([*-)]) really takes the cake: "People, who know sound, know GENESIS MEDIA LABS. It is a name that commands respect because GENESIS MEDIA LABS speakers are ranked among the finest in the world. GENESIS MEDIA LABS has pioneered many internationally acclaimed innovations. No other manufacturer has done more to advance the art of digital loudspeaker engineering. Someone needs to go Eliot Ness on this group and clean them out!
  17. Wow, these teenage audiophiles are coming out of the wood work lately! (myself included, although I turn 20 in August) The RB-10s are going to give you far better quality sound than any "micro shelf system" or whatever boxed crap most kids buy at Wal-Mart. They will provide excellent and clear-sounding treble, and certainly not "too much" of it. You'll find that in the audio world, too much is never enough! As far as the bass is concerned, to be completely, brutally honest, the RB-10s are not going to give you the floor-shaking bass you seek. The bass extension (pick-up, you call it) goes down to 90 hertz. What that basically means is that the speakers can't "dip down" into the low frequencies far enough to really pound. The woofers are simply too small to move enough air (acoustically speaking) to create a powerful *thump*. This can be countered in many ways. You could 1) start off with the RB-10s, and save up for a dedicated subwoofer (best scenario), which will really pound the ground. 2) You could go "gray market" and find some nice stuff (particularly on ebay), sometimes New in Box for much less than retail. It should be noted that the speakers won't come with any warranty this way. Just one example: http://cgi.ebay.com/Klipsch-RB-61-RB61-Pair-of-Black-Bookshelf-Speakers_W0QQitemZ230248466098QQihZ013QQcategoryZ14991QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem A sub will still be needed to make the set up complete, but something a little larger will at least fill in the "gap" for a little while 3) you could try out a set of promedia 2.1s, which include two satellite speakers and a 6 1/2" sub for well under $200 without the need for a receiver (a source switcher would come in handy, though). Keep in mind, they are not "meant" for home theater use, but my pair certainly can crank out the bass (because of the sub) on anything I play. You'd just have to work the the line-in 3.5mm jack to connect your stuff. Still doable, though. If you do stick with the actual home theater speakers, any basic receiver from the likes of Pioneer, Yamaha or Sony will work and can be attained for $200 and under. Your journey will be a long and exciting one, have fun!
  18. While we're at it, I need a way to carry 50 gallons of water, but it can't weigh more than 12 pounds. I know someone can think of something![:^)]
