  1. Thanks, I did...the plans are just sort of a guideline. I have to figure out what to do with two pair of HII guts.
  2. Thanks, I appreciate it...yea things will have to change a little, but it should be fun.
  3. I've been using my own custom version of Linux (Fedora Core 8 now) w/some Kernel hacks, it goes into my MM servers. Startcomm also has some pretty serious stuff when it comes to MM Linux distros. I can serve 10 client requests for content with no problem. Codecs are easily available and there are a few product (non American) that have virtually complete sets of codecs for any digital source. My server is a 1U rack mount, the only stuff visible in the front are the DVD/RW drive and the power lights. For client sound cards I have been using Creative stuff and the Creative Digital IO modules to drive spdif inputs. The clients use a really light interface, the way it should be.
  4. Thanks James, Actually I just purchased and installed the HIII conversion kit and wow...really awesome. My GF has taken over the R?-52 stuff for the living room, so the Heresy's live in my lab/play room apparently they are now considered HIII's by Klipsch personnel, internally they are HIII's. They sound incredible. Now if I could just get a pair of the really cool HIII grill covers. James, my mom still has all her original equipment, the 62 Khorns, the Mac stuff, Thorens turntable, Revox( or something like that) reel to reel and relatively new sony DVD/CD player.
  5. Sorry...I bought the conversion kit to make the Heresy II's to Heresy III's, it is truly awesome. The guts from my HII's are going into a pair of scaled down LaScala's and I'll be co promoting them with my Linux based digital media server. There really is nothing quite like the Heritage series. I guess I could not be the dark hearted traitor I thought I could be, but the GF does love the RF stuff in the living room, the horns are in my "man cave", along with a bunch of computers and an old Sony Wega. I think I still have a copy of Red Hat 6.1 in here.
  6. The best bargain I got was the HIII conversion kits. At $277 per speaker I got something new, more dynamic, more efficient and most importantly, better sounding than my H II's. Since my cabs are flawless, I'll get another 20 years out of them. the guts from my HII's are going into Lilscala's...I found a local guy who will build them if we co promote my media server with the speakers.

    Free at last...

Ok, so I was looking for a way out of the Windoze world and I found it, Ubuntu 7.10. Not the ultimate server system, but a great desktop, and with the new NTFS kernal package I can read and write my very large NTFS file system on this machine...this means I no longer have any Windows machines in the house. The version of Wine under Ubuntu runs the few windoze programs I like. Although Ubuntu is a little power hungry compared to Fedora Core 8, it is totally worth it. This machine is a 64 Bit AMD 4800+ X2, 3 GB of RAM and a graphics card with 512 MB of Ram and the Nvidia GeForce 8500 chipset. Now it flys, no problems with process control or any of the retarded stuff. Linux is a real multiuser, multitasking OS and man it shows. BTW, it has no issue with my Soundblaster X-Fi Extreme card, all still outputs through the digital IO module to spdif, to my receiver. For my server, of course I am still on the Red Hat side. for any questions, please ask.
  8. My mom has some old Macintosh tube equipment from 1962, she has told me that when she is gone it is all mine, but I still prefer my Yamaha Receiver and my 1.25 TB of digital data stored on my Linux machine.
  9. Stan, once all was good, they totally kick ***, it was worth every minute and every dime.
  10. I am keeping th HII guts as either a center channel project or a lilscala project. They are some really great guts.
  11. Mike, the more I listen to them, the more I really like them, I'm taking the guts of one of the HII's to make a center channel, does it have to be apx 2.0 cubic feet in volume, my version, a little longer, which puts less psi on the tv almost makes sense, but it is slightly larger in terms of cubic feet, it is about 2.2 cubic feet. Mike, tell Mark he did a heck of a job on the parts for the rebuild, in spite of the two gotcha's it was totally worth it. I have one really dumb question, how do I clean my grille clothes. Or can I order new ones ? Since I have HIII's now, I figure the clothes should be as pretty as the cabs and as awesome as the sound. (Mike, by the way, the correct abbreviation for Lieutenant Commander is LCDR, but it's all good with me.)
  12. As an anarchistic person by nature, I don't like being told how to play movies, or what to play them on, so I built my own little video server, it has all the codecs necessary to play any DVD and lots of other fun features. I actually am waiting for a reasonably priced blu-ray DVD/RW to come out for my video server as I already have a double sided burner in the machine. There are several Linux (and some Windoze) based oprions for playing, streaming and other stuff with your DVD's. Me, I keep backups of all DVD's including titlesets on a 1.25 TB Linux server. Granted I am all Fedora, so I'm stuck in a Linux mode. If any one wants to throw in on this thread, please do, I would be happy to answer emails as well as provide really inexpensive media servers that can do a number of wonderfull things for a little more than a copy of Vista Ultimate. Interested, bop me an e-mail, or keep doing the MPAA way. Remember..."Friends don't let friends ride windoze (except on the client side)"
  13. It was fun talking to Mark (Klipsch maven and Engineer) and corresponding with Mike. Mike has a valid point. If my input cups were cut low, that would explain the wiring snafu. All in all, this has been a really good experience, the Klipsch team responded with due alacrity. Of course it was Mike that made me aware of the upgrade, and now that all works, I am good with the final product, Mark did a heck of a job revamping what was already a great product. Now I have the guts of 2 H II's so I have to figure out whether to go for a lilscala, or just make a center channel with one set. I had contemplated the lilscala, and one of the guys on the forum can do them, but I think I should go local so I can avoid huge shipping charges. There is a place around here that does custom cabinetry and they are aching to do this. Honestly a center channel might just fit the bill. Thanks Mike and thank Mark for the support. To all HII owners I have three words - "go for it"
  14. Nope, the sound quality is totally Klipsch and bloody awesome. I spoke to some of the Klipsh personnel today, and told them what I had done, so the instructions to install may change a little as a result. Turns out the magnet on the new tweeter is 3x the size of the old one, so making the hole larger was the way to go. What really separates out Klipsch is the level of support they provide, and after speaking to the Engineers on the project, they agreed with what I had done. Now, I have a really kick *** pair of HIII's, yes they are now considered HIII's, totally cool. The HII's were really good, these are better. Things I ran into that I was not crazy about: Having to widen the tweeter hole was a little task, so I used a drill with a grinding bit, took about 15 minutes, totally made life easier, especially for a guy who wears an XL boxing glove (me). I had to mount the crossover cups upside down so I had enough lead wire to get to the tweeters. No biggie, I never see the backs. Truthfully, it was totally worth it, I now have what I consider to be a much more powerfull set of speakers. Taking apart the tweeter to get the new magnet in would have been less than a good idea considering the size of my hands. The directions were pretty good for the most part, but hey, I am considered a 'beta tester' and there are a few things to be worked out, but in the end, it was worth it.
  15. Ok, I did it, one pair of my heresy II's (year 2000) has been converted to H III's, few things I noticed. 1. Mount the new crossover upside down so you get more cable to each speaker. 2. Yep the HIII's have more bass, yep they are more efficient and because they are new drivers, the will last for another 20 years. 3. Mounting the new tweeter is a total PITA, the magnet on the new one is twice the size of the old one, getting in the slot for the tweeter took some work with a router. Totally not fun. Is is worth it...I guess so.
  16. After having a monster cable crap out on me, I just go to the industrial supply store for 14-2 twisted pair wire and other cables I need.
  17. In 22 years of US Naval service, I never really fell in love with a firearm. I like my K-bar better. So what does a 49 year old, retired guy do. I build Linux machines for custom orders, I fight Muay Thai and I still wrestle (Freestyle) every week. Ok, so I wrestled Jr. High through College...I could never play golf worth a spit. Tennis...no way. At 49 I am 5'6", 134 lbs and @ 5% body fat, rare among Americans. My Doctor says I am a very healthy 25 year old, regardless of what my records say. I also enjoy bullying Bose owners, it's always fun, and we have lots of them up here in MA. I own two pair of H II's one vintage '85 (Black Ash), the others (Oiled Walnut) which will be converted to H III's next week. The never ones are HW0, and they are gorgeous, the conversion kit means I should have them until I can no longer hear...at least another 30 years. Some guy wants my 85's...no way. After adding BEC crossovers they sound too damn good. Hoo Yah and Semper Fi to all my brothers out there. (Sorry, Navy first, as always)
  18. It's age, some things get dusty and get a little funky, the controls on my mom's old Macintosh equipment make noise because of dust in the potentiometers. Once you get buy it, all still sounds good.
  19. Well, tomorrow I am selling my 85 HII's with BEC networks, they sound great and the black ash veneer has faired ok, but they still sparkle. I have been told that the HII conversion kit for my other H II's is coming Monday and yet I feel a loss, of a great, sparkling beauties. My other H II's are model year appropriate (square input cup) for the upgrade, so I will have a brand new pair of speakers Monday, as soon as I finish the conversion, which starts the minute Fed Ex delivers the packages. The BEC crossover networks make these speakers sparkle, and after a few minutes at Best Buy today, listening to the salesman espouse the virtues of the Bose 321, I was happy to get home, turn on my real speakers and enjoy a movie. I am looking forward to the H III's and yet saddened by the loss of my H II's. I am one confused SOB.
  20. When I was in college I got to see The Ramones perform in Roslyn, NY. As a young Ensign stationed at Little Creek I got to see the following band: Iron Cross (multiple times) Iggy and the Stooges Cro Mags The Dictators Patti Smith New York Dolls The Dead Boys Lou Reed Unatural Axe The Angry Samoans I saw Costello, but don't see him as a punk act, or the Talking Heads, more like new wave guys. I can't believe Joey and Tommy Ramone are dead, it is depressing. The Stooges, now that was a hard core band, what broke them up was Ron Ashton getting drafted by the Navy (we get all the talent). I had a friend who lived in Manhattan so we used to take advantage of weekend liberty and jet up there in my 1972 Olds 442 w/the W-30 package. Today, I never play those guys at full blast, my taste in music has changed, as has my taste for really high volume. I spent 22 years in Swift Boats and SWCC, so I am happy to still have my hearing. I really loved the spirit of the Clash 'White Album' much as I like the 4-Skins, AC-DC, The Dropkick Murphy's and anyone who exudes energy, some stuff by the White stripes.
  21. I don't really know, but a quick perusal through the Dell online catalog seems to see it that way, I can get an external Blu-Ray player for about $330 and an internal burner for about $999 ( 1000 bucks)...Guess they win, I'll wait till the prices drop and buy the internal drive.
  22. Harry, while I wait for mine to come, I use three out of my four H II's...I got a really big shelf to put the center channel above the tv and wow, in my litttle (12 x 8 x 10) bedroom, it is something else. Can't wait for the conversion kit to come, of course then I'll have a sonic mismatch, but I'll also have four spare Heresy drivers, which I intend to make into mini cornwalls.
  23. Yea, yea...she trained her whole life, what about us guys who train as wrestlers our whole young lives, knowing that until recently we had nowhere to go, now of course we have the UFC, but back then, it wasn't about anything beyond winning the next match. The only police escort we get is to county jail.
  24. Does anyone have cornwall plans, I'm going to have two spare pair of HII drivers and crossovers very soon, and I'd love to scale down the Cornwall to HII woofer specs ? Ok, please ?
  25. Y'all win, I'm ordering the kit tomorrow, my H II's have the correct input cup, they are relatively new (2000) and beautiful, totally worth it. My older pair will have to just suffer with the BEC crossovers. Too bad I can't just order them through the website tonight.
