  1. Happy Birthday, Roger! It was a helluva game, regardless of who you were cheering for. I'm a Pats fan, but I was disappointed that coach BB couldn't offer a little better handshake with Tony Dungy at the end of the game. I guess BB is still pretty ticked off about the whole Spygate thing. Anyway, Happy Birthday again. Hope you have a great birthday week! Chris
  2. Those are pretty durn nice and a great deal price-wise. I would jump on them if you can spring for the cash. Looks like the Acton/Harvard/Chelmsford area. Good luck! Chris
  3. Given this, I'd definitely run ... He's not only dishonest about the age, he's got no conscience. Find a better seller to do business with. Keep an eye out for some Cornwalls in the Boston area. Cambridge has a lot of them since old-timers bought them at the Music Box in Brookline (?) when it was open. I got a nice pair of 1967 Cornwall II (verticals) from such a situation. Dr. Lessard now owns them and they can be had for $800-$1000 if you're patient. Chris
  4. Not sure ... I haven't seen that ... but Greg's a really good guy. I have a pair of his Klipschorns in the family room! Chris
  5. Kelly, I'll take the contrary position ... I've bough a lot of Klipsch speakers over the last five years and a few observations: (1) Not being able to preview them is a problem; my gut tells me your instincts are right; (2) a quarter-sized chip is pretty large, but it tells me these speakers haven't been protected as well as they should have been, be it parties or moving; (3) my gut tells me that you'll have to replace the diaphragms for the tweeters ... they're probably blown. Figure $75 for that plus the hassle of ordering them, install them, etc.. Being able to preview them would enable you to take a simple multimeter to see if the diaphragms are intact, as well as checking the mid-range and woofers. If someone won't let you do this, I'd be stressed a bit. If you've already done a deal, that's fine, but if not, I'd tell him it's a deal-breaker and look around Audiogon or Craig's list. I paid the record price for a pair of oak Heresies ($700) on Ebay ... but they were local, they were perfect, and they were relatively rare in my area. I was OK with the decision and didn't lose any sleep. Good luck and let us know how it turns out! Chris
  6. I've used Niles products with great success ... They have both amp and speaker switch boxes. The resistors and connectors are all of good quality and I couldn't notice any signal degradation. Chris
  7. Brac, where are you in Maine? You might want to hunt down Greg928S4 (I think that's it) ... He's got killer tube amps and Klipschorns. He's Downeast in the Waterville area ... Chris
  8. Richard, thanks ... Nice to be back. I've been really busy finishing the remodel of this place, it's been nuts. We're finally done, just have to paint a bedroom, three bathrooms, the home theater ... Maybe another week? I'm browsing back threads I've missed over recent months. I caught up with GaryMD last month while he was vacationing locally, but other than that, I've been MIA [:'(] I'll try to fix that!
  9. Easy, although I took your photos above and couldn't see how they went together. If you want to post them in order left to right, I could do it no problem! Chris
  10. The home of my best friend back in Massachusetts sat on the highest hill in Stow ... and in an uncovered cell area. The telcos were after him as well and they finally parcelled off an itty-bitty piece of land, stuck it in a family trust, and watched it make $100K per year in revenue. It doesn't look bad at all. Looks like a flagpole without a flag. I'd do it in a heartbeat if I was in your in-law's position ... Put in the tower, funnel the money into trust for all the grandkids' college educations. No brainer [] Of course, I don't need to tell YOU that ... financial whiz that you are! Chris
  11. Roger, just about spit out my drink reading that ... So true ... The stuff that happens when you hit 50 is often not pretty [:'(] Given his room dimensions, I would think an Ultra system is a good choice. The reflections in the room will be the next challenge, i.e., damping the primary and secondary reflections. We all know the square room is a nightmare. The Ultra will give him a little placement flexibility and the size of the speakers is a help. Personally, I'm a Heritage fan but having never heard the Ultra, I can't make an honest recommendation. I designed the room I have now around Klpschorns but that may not happen again -- ever ... unless I am supremely lucky in having the "room" to work with. Chris
  12. Hey Richard, This sounds like a great idea. Not to make it overly complicated though, why not just put the speakers in the back yard and point them out to God's green earth ... Bar and bathrooms close at hand, nearest neighbor about 19 miles away. After about 2 hours, folks will be a little too tuned anyway to distinguish any difference ... Other suggestion .. Why not "brute force" this thing for a New Years Eve party? That gives us 8 weeks to plan the essentials and ways of getting there. Hope you're well! Chris
  13. I was afraid of that.[] It was an "on the spot" decision. There was absolutely no wind Saturday morning as we were being eaten by the mosquitos and flies while IN the ocean. Catherine and I turned to each other at the exact same time and said, "Let's go home." After 25 years, we can read each other's minds. Gary, was kidding about the lunch. We kept the same game plan we agreed to ... burgers, chicken. It was coming out the freezer so no inconvenience whatsoever. Our mission was to get you both in and out in less than an hour because we were worried about the drive in front of you. The fact that the bugs expedited the right decision was in fact a favor to you, in disguise. Another time ... Or maybe next time we're in DC! Chris, Carrie, Jack and Max The Wonder Dog
  14. Gary, glad you got back in one piece and seemingly have survived your first day back at the office. BTW, I sure didn't play like a 4 ... more like a 14, but as you said, it was fun and relaxing. 18 holes is kind of pushing it for both of us, given our lack of practice and gimpy backs. Sorry to miss the LP's ... and sorry to miss you both for lunch. I do think an early return home was a very smart thing to do .... but we're stuck here eating a mound of chicken pesto salad on chibata bread [] Chris
  15. Looks like we won't see Gary today, unfortunately. Instead of heading back today, they started out yesterday afternoon. He called yesterday before leaving, apologizing, but they changed their plans. While I was disappointed we couldn't send them off in proper style, I think it was absolutely the right decision to split the trip into two days. Why destroy a week's worth of rest getting home from it in one massive road trip? Suspect also that they had seen, and done, everything there was to do on Daufuskie Island; they were well rested. Getting home with a low stress m.o. was just the ticket. And maybe the idea of our cooking was just a little frightening []
  16. He's swinging by here for lunch on Sunday before driving north to DC ... I felt like I should at least him and his lovely wife before heading out of town. Since they have 10 hour or so drive, I think I'll back away from nuclear chili or anything else requiring prophylactic medication. So .... Should I mention this thread to him or let him find it as a "welcome back" present? I know he's going to blush and say something in the line of "WTF?" (nicely, of course) ... Please let me know what the consensus is ... Chris
  17. I must admit that I've never gotten LP's from Gary ... But he took me golfing today .... at a VERY NICE PLACE off of Calibogue Sound on Daufuskie Island. He is a true gentleman, picked up the $$$$$ green fees, and we had a really nice time. We both are recovering spinal surgery guys, so we had a few bright spots on the course, but in the end, I think the golf course won. It didn't matter ... We had a good chunk of time to get to know each other a little. Folks often say how much you learn about a person while playing golf. Indeed, it's true. He's a very classy guy. He spoke little of himself, though he could have; he's accomplished a lot in his life. Instead, he spoke of his friends here on the forum, and how much he loves his wife. In my book, it doesn't get much better than that. He's in a very nice condo overlooking southern Hilton Head and Savannah. I'm not sure, but I think his laptop stayed home. You may not be hearing from him on this thread until next Monday. Don't take it as a slight; just consider a guy taking his wife away on a very private, 25th year wedding anniversary. We both communed a bit on forum members we've met "live" over the years; I have met a few, but I would honestly say that I wish Gary was my next door neighbor. He has all those good qualities you want in a person. He'll get your kid off the bus when you've miscalculated traffic, he'll listen well when you've got something important to say, and he'll be humble just about all the rest of the time on anythng that has to do with him. Great day ... Thanks, Gary. One of the really good guys ... Chris & Carrie
  18. Glad to understand the connection, now ... Congrats to all of the family. Chris
  19. I have Klipschorns and Cornwalls (and Heresies and a Belle) and find that the Khorns are VERY room-dependent. With your room, I think the Cornwalls would do better because you aren't bound to the reflection issues of the Khorns. Your diagonal across the room is much shorter than most lower notes, plus the room is almost square, so you'll have waves criss-crossing all over. The Khorns do well in large rooms (aircraft hangers []), whereas the Cornwalls can be pointed where you're sitting. My Klipschorns never really ran loose until I got them in a bigger room (4000 cubic feet). Anyway, to answer your questions, you're just reacting to what you're hearing. I'd put the Cornwalls back into the room, pull them out of the corners and walls a foot or two, and enjoy. That's the same kind of room that I have mine in right now (with 3W amps) and they're just wonderful. Chris
  20. Cal, every day is a gift ... Glad you're on the mend with the help of some great surgeons and lots of willpower. I was a year ago that I blew out my back- and surgery - and it is only now I'm feeling 90%. It is amazing how long it takes to fully heal. As others have said, don't rush it ... even if you feel well. The body heals itself on its own schedule [] Chris
  21. Hey Q, This thread's been around so long I think folks have just stopped seeing it [] Thanks for the installation compliment. I was really curious how the Danley would mate with the Heritage front wall, and it's been great. It has a bunch of gravitas when needed, yet it is very musical. The SMS1 is a big help too since the Sunfire TG I that I have is pretty limited in terms of output and programming options. It had been -- and still is -- my intent to upgrade the processor once standards settle down. In the meantime, the TG is just fine for most viewing. If you want to email me with questions or request for pix, I'd be happy to help .... I know Arthur loves his F113, or at least last I remember reading ... Chris
  22. lol, no worries. Ok, I get that the tops of those pipes are closed, but as you follow them down they join at a T-Section where a bit of pipe goes towards the front (which my or may not open to the front) and then there is another piece of pipe that goes towards the back (and looks like it bends down). Is the pipe going towards the back open at the bottom? Or is it a mounting flange thing? It looks like a mounting flange thing ... Looking at it, I couldn't see what purpose it fulfilled, but I'm sure old Tom had some trick up his sleeve ...
  23. Sorry about that! We've just had a lot going on here ... Latest (and last) project is the rebuilt of the master suite, including bathroom, dressing room and reading room. We're on track and on budget, but so much to do ... Including painting it and the entrance hall as well. If we can get the house on the market in September, we may be out of here by the Spring. It will depend on pricing and the market, of course. We may be out sooner or later, not sure, but it looks like we'll be moving to Dallas. Still searching for a job there, but it's hard to do it when folks there see you living six states to the east [:|]
  24. Here's what I've got ... looking UP into the cabinet above the driver. This is a wonderful piece of cabinetry ... very similar to Khorns in build quality. Whatever Tom Danley did was amazing ... you can't imagine the sound coming from this box. It's scary when called for. Chris
  25. Doc, Would love to help you out on that front, but it's not going to happen soon [] It took me a month and some help to get the thing out, let alone putting it back in. I can tell you that the pipes you see are tapped at the top .... I think I have a pic ... Next post ... Chris
