  1. Tenacious D rocks. They're sweeeet(Cartman-SP). I wish they would keep showing them on HBO. I haven't seen a new episode in along time. In fact I haven't seen any episodes in a long time. What's up with that? ------------------ 89' K-horn's(Mains) 81' Cornwall's(Rears) 85' Heresey's(Centers) KSW-12(Sub) Yamaha RX-V1 61" Hitachi WIDESCREEN Dish Net w/Opt Out X-Box w/Opt & Comp Outs(DVD/CD) JVC S-VHS Sony Minidisk -------------------------
  2. Boa/Q, The low freq from the mains is sent to the sub in "Both" mode when and only when you are listening to a 2-Channel source. In which case it extracts the signal from the two channels ie it crosses it over and everthing below 90hz is sent to the sub. This is a no brainer as where else is it going to get the signal. I prefer to set the crossover setting myself at 120hz on the sub so I use the Main Pre out to feed the sub. Ok now for when the source is 5.1... The amp is set to "Both" on the front and speaks are set to large. Now the fronts are getting all the normal signal from the front channels and the .1 LFE is mixed in. What do you get from the sub? As I would expect you get just the .1 LFE signal that it, that's all no more no less, not the same lows as are coming through the front because the front is getting a mix not the sub. The only way to get a mix in the sub is to set the fronts to "small" in which case you are not getting any bass out of the mains all from the sub. Like I said before in my a previous post I can get the best of both worlds by using the pre outs. I also get the sub for 2-cahnnel stero listening ie not using any of the DSP's to simulate 5.1 and I can set my crossover levels at the sub above the 90hz which is fixed on the sub out of the reciever. The KSW-12 works overtime producing all of the bass between 120hz and 90hz that it would not get if I used only the sub out. Now for the rest of the story. Last night I configured the RX-V1 the way I have been planning on but just hadn't gotten around to. One point of interest is that as soon as I plugged into the Main outs I lost all signal to the Main speakers as the amp was wanting me to run a signal back into it in the Pre ins so I had to use my eq to complete the loop back into the amp which is fine because I wanted to juice up the signal anyway. I used the tape out on the back of the eq to the sub (both left and right channels into the sub). Immediately noticed a huge difference in the bass as I was getting the lows from the front above 90Hz to the sub. To be objective I also bypassed the eq controls and still had more bass. As I said before this setup is no different that how you would set up a sub on an old two channel amp theres nothing special about it. IMO summary: You can rest assured that the .1 channel output will cross over the signal at a set HZ unless your amp has bass management for the .1 channel. I would also say that probably 99.9% of all amps will not mix the front bass with the LFE to the sub in 5.1 mode because the .1 is a "discrete" channel", if it wasn't then why would you need six cables in for 5.1? You wouldn't you would only need 5 and the amp would figure out what to send to the .1 channel, the .1 channel is encoded in the signal. Also on all receivers when you use a DSP or Pro-Logic to create a 5.1 sound the amp is deriving the signal sent to the sub(.1 channel) from the mains and crossing it over at the setting you set the amp to or the fixed hz. Whats more, 99.9% of all recievers will not send a signal out of the .1 output when you are listening in 2 channel stereo mode. Now I agree this thread has become very confusing but it's not rocket science folks. Even though some us have spent coultless hours behind a birds nest of wires configuring wiring and drawing diagrams to see if something will work only to get a huge ground loop that whats it's all about, it's fun to screw around with your stuff and learn more about it in the process. The best way to figure out how you want your setup is to expirement, if your satisfied with using the factory setup then thats fine too. That reminds me back to the days when I was about 6 years old wiring up the old record players. Remember the ones that you could close up like a lunch box with a denim case. I would take those things and wire up as many speakers as I could get my hands on. I would collect pop cans which were 5 cent refunds in Iowa and turn them in for the cash. I would then go to all the garage sales I could find and buy up all the electronic junk I could find just to go home and take it apart and mess with it. Those were to good old days, all of that stuff was so interesting. Some things never change, the equipment just becomes more expensive and a lot more costly to repair if you screw it up. I would say alot of us here on this BB probably have similiar memories of their youth. Anyway on a side note last night I also setup the RX-V1 for 4.1 stereo. I did this not by using a switcher on the Main speaker outputs but in a diffenerent way. If you have read this post you know I am now getting the sub in the mix on two channel stereo so thats the .1 of the 4.1. The RX-V1 has a out put for Zone 2 which is just another internal preamp that can be used to route any analog signal set into the amp to another room, recording device etc. and is completely unaffected by what the main pream is doing. I ttok the two channel out of the Zone 2, spilt it and fed it into the FL, FR, RL, RR of the 6.1 inputs. SInce I do not have SACD I am not using these inputs. I just set the Zone 2 out to whatever source I want to listen to and turn the amp to 6 channel input and whalla 4.1 and I am using 4 of the internal amplifiers to drive instead of having to use the B set of speaker outputs and all of the swithcing is done in the amp. No problem. 3. Boa, An exerpt from the RX-V1 manual: LFE/Bass Out(Bass Out Mode) LFE signals carry low frequency effects when this unit decodes DD or DTS signals. Low frequency signals are defined as 90 mhz and below. The initial setting is "Both" -Select the "SW" setting if you are going to use a subwoofer. The LFE signals are directed to the sub. -Select the "Main" setting if you do not use a subwoofer. The LFE signals are directed to the Main speakers. -Select the "Both" setting if you use a subwoofer and you want to mix the Main channel low frequency sound signals with the LFE signals. So in the both mode you do get LFE in the main speakers but you don get main speaker low frequencies in the subwoofer therefore the mains have the potential to be producing low frequencies that are not being directed to you sub because. The only way to get those signals to the sub out is to set the amp to "Small" for the front speakers in which case it would send low frequencies that would normally be produced from the front channel and mix it with the LFE and send it to the sub, then there are no low frequencies whatsoever coming through the Main speakers only the sub. I guess you could say I am just trying to get the best of both worlds. So yes you are correct you have to use the front preouts to do both LFE and low bass to the sub. I agree that an internal adjustable crossover in the receiver is desireable but it still doesn't solve the problem of getting front speaker low bass to the sub (all crossover frequencies aside). The dedicated LFE channel may be a crossed over version of what you hear out of the fronts but then again it may be tottally independent depending on the original track assignment at the mixing lab. I am not clear on what you mean by "low bass is cut much lower than 80-90hz but at least there are ways around a high fixed x-over & big speakers". I am not sure what you mean by high fixed, do you mean low fixed? I wish the sub out was fixed at something more like 150hz so I could do the adjusting on the x-over in the sub if I wanted to cut somewhere above 90hz rather than limiting me to 90hz and below. I don't know, maybe once again we are still saying the same thing. My head is starting to hurt. 4. I'm a huge Jimmy fan. Some killer discs that have come out in the last 10 or so years since they released the rights of his studio work to his sister are "South Saturn Delta" and "Blues" both are killer. They are Probably my fav Jimmy CD's. As far as compilations that I am aware of "Are you Expirienced" is probably the best if you want his popular stuff. "Kiss the Sky" is also good. Not a fan of Axis disc for the most part. ------------------ 89' K-horn's(Mains) 81' Cornwall's(Rears) 85' Heresey's(Centers) KSW-12(Sub) Yamaha RX-V1 61" Hitachi WIDESCREEN Dish Net w/Opt Out X-Box w/Opt & Comp Outs(DVD/CD) JVC S-VHS Sony Minidisk ------------------------- This message has been edited by erikjohn on 09-25-2002 at 12:13 PM

  7. Audioreality, I think you bring to light some very good points about the younger posters that I think we can all reflect on what you have stated. Hopefully the younger posters will read your wise words and get something positive from it. It was very upsetting to me to read some of the stuff in the "Liar" thread. This board is unlike any other I have ever visited. The members of this board are really like a "family" which is why some probably start taking things personal. It is everyones board, we created it and we control it. There's nothing wrong with an arguement or a gentlemans disagreement but name calling and threats should not be tolerated regardless of age by any of us. At the end of the day we just need to be able to shake hands, let by-gones be by-gones and let sleeping dogs lie. As the "grown ups" we need to be the ones to step up to the plate and handle these situations like an adult by not responding to these types of posts and adding fuel to the fire. In these types of situations if you ignor the problem eventually it will go away. Long live the Klipsch BB and all other BB's shall strive to become what we already are. Ok how about another group hug. ------------------ 89' K-horn's(Mains) 81' Cornwall's(Rears) 85' Heresey's(Centers) KSW-12(Sub) Yamaha RX-V1 61" Hitachi WIDESCREEN Dish Net w/Opt Out X-Box w/Opt & Comp Outs(DVD/CD) JVC S-VHS Sony Minidisk ------------------------- This message has been edited by erikjohn on 09-25-2002 at 10:41 AM
  8. What are reference levels? In reference to what? If it sounds good to you who cares. It's like THX accredited amps, who gives a rip. Is it just another marketing scheme mines better than yours type thing. Here buy this it's the best, see....THX...BFD. I'll give you a reference level...When your ears start bleeding and the dog is sh*tting all over the place because he can't handle the bass. I think if you can reach those levels then you've got something really special. I have no idea where that came from. I normally just sit back and lurk here in the BB. I think I may finally be coming out of the closet. 9. Boa, I am not currently doing this with the RX-V1 as I haven't had alot of time to fool around with the settings on it to figure out all of the options that it will allow. I will fiddle around with it as time permits however I am familiar with the old Yammy 5250 and I would assume I have many of the same options on the new one. Now for the post: Yes it sounds like we are saying basically the same thing. The Yammy's will send LFE to sub and fronts however this means the Mains get whatever they would have normally for bass plus the LFE in the mix and obviously the sub preout gets just the LFE signal. This is why I like to use the main preouts to the sub, that way you get all of the bass not just the LFE to the sub. This is also benifical if you listen in 2 channel stereo because you are then utilizing the sub for lows. When you set to LFE out specifically when you listen Digital 5.1 since the sub is dedicated any bass sent to mains is not routed to sub unless encoded on that channel. Using the main preouts with the amp setting on either no sub or mix(LFE to mains and sub as you stated and yes the Yammy does this) will allow any lows encoded only on fronts to also be be routed to the sub. If you have a good set of main speakers that are capable of deep solid bass you need to utilize them to help reproduce the LFE as much as possible. If you setup your sytem with the sub off an use the main preouts to the sub you should notice more bass in the system. Keeping in mind that even though bass is not directional this makes the sweetspot larger and fuller and it is difficult to pinpoint where the bass is originating from, it is just in your face. It just seems to engulf you better especially for movies. To each his own but this is my expirience. Also keep in mind that to me there can never be too much bass, I am not happy until all the windows are rattling, the glasses are shaking out of the cupboards and the TV looks blurry from the shake so I may be a little opinionated and to many this may be overkill. 10. Kdaddy, Well it's good to know the tweeters or the netwrok waren't damaged. I know with the KSF's it was just like one day I noticed that the harshness was gone. Even though it seemed like the highs were lesser they still sparkled and tended to blend with the mids rather than overpower them. I must assume your not disappointed with the new sound of your RS's merely concerned with change, as any good guardian would be. 11. Jt, As you advised when I bought my RX-V1 at the blowout price the remote is no longer available. Anyway the last thing I need is another remote to keep track of. The remote for the RX-V1 will suffice as it will operate almost anything you need it to. Thanks for the heads up though. ------------------ 89' K-horn's(Mains) 81' Cornwall's(Rears) 85' Heresey's(Centers) KSW-12(Sub) Yamaha RX-V1 61" Hitachi WIDESCREEN Dish Net w/Opt Out X-Box w/Opt & Comp Outs(DVD/CD) JVC S-VHS Sony Minidisk -------------------------
  12. Kdaddy, I am assuming that sound is still coming out of the tweeters since you said that treble has been lost but is not gone. I have heard that the highs from the non-heritage klipsch speakers tends to smooth out over time. I have expirienced this with some KSF 8.5's however the change in sound was welcomed as they were a bit harsh in the begining. I have also the heard the same for Yamaha receivers however I don't know the validity of this as I am on my second Yammy and I have never noticed it. ------------------ 89' K-horn's(Mains) 81' Cornwall's(Rears) 85' Heresey's(Centers) KSW-12(Sub) Yamaha RX-V1 61" Hitachi WIDESCREEN Dish Net w/Opt Out X-Box w/Opt & Comp Outs(DVD/CD) JVC S-VHS Sony Minidisk -------------------------
  13. kdaddy, Although I am not boa i will respond. To answer your question Yes, there should be a noticable difference as I have always expirienced one by doing what Boa states which is: -Turn off sub option in amp so that LFE goes to main channels. Obviously this is going to increase your bass out put from the front channels assuming your speakers are capable of reproducing the lows. -Take preouts from main channel and send them to the sub. Cross over these channels by whatever methods you have available (ie internal sub x-over, eq, or standalone x-over) and route them into the sub. This will work like a charm. The eq on the output to the sub is a nice touch to get some real control of your bass management by being able to attentuate the signal as you wish. Note that I have put one channel of the eq just on the sub out (0.1 channel) also to manage bass which also works well. ------------------ 89' K-horn's(Mains) 81' Cornwall's(Rears) 85' Heresey's(Centers) KSW-12(Sub) Yamaha RX-V1 61" Hitachi WIDESCREEN Dish Net w/Opt Out X-Box w/Opt & Comp Outs(DVD/CD) JVC S-VHS Sony Minidisk -------------------------
  14. PB/Boa, Yes this works fine in fact I first did this about fifteen years ago before 5.1 was even around with my Pro-Logic setup. It's all just simple wiring schemes. I would imagine that many of the posters have done this as I still use this with my 5.1 system. I also have an old radio shack eq that I put in line from the pre outs to the sub so that I can boost the signal and manage the sub bass more effectively. ------------------ 89' K-horn's(Mains) 81' Cornwall's(Rears) 85' Heresey's(Centers) KSW-12(Sub) Yamaha RX-V1 61" Hitachi WIDESCREEN Dish Net w/Opt Out X-Box w/Opt & Cmpnt Outs(DVD/CD) JVC S-VHS Sony Minidisk ------------------------- This message has been edited by erikjohn on 09-24-2002 at 06:45 AM
  15. "Lighten up Francis" Scotter is just trying to help and if you don't want responses such as Scooter's than you need to describe what you have already tried in more detail. Sometimes the obvoius is the first thing that we forget to check. Anyway I understand that these type of problems are frustrating. First off I am not familiar with the DVD player that you have but it may be automatically choosing the best possible out put for sound which may not be DD or DTS therefore your amp is not recognizing it. Secondly, I do know a few people who use the DVD-A and they use the 6 channels outs to pass the signal rather than the optical cable. I would try using the 6 outputs from the DVD-A(Let the player do the decoding) into the receiver and use your ear to see if you are getting 5.1 full range/channel sound. That would be a good place to start. Assuming this works fine, which it probably will you then need to check your menus on the DVD-A to make sure it is configured correctly for what signal you want to pass through the optical cable. Noting that when you use the optical/coaxial output from the player it passes a signal of a certain format and assumes that your amp will decode it(Not trying to state the obvious but it is a point worth mentioning). Also keeping in mind that unless your DVD-A player is lighting up DD, DTS, DVD-A lights all at once(which is unlikely) it is choosing a default format to pass which your amp is only recognizing as PCM 2 channel stereo and thus the amp is decoding it the only way it know's to, which is Pro-Logic. ------------------ K-horn's(Main) Cornwall's(Rear) Heresey's(Center) KSW-12(Sub) Yamaha RX-V1 61" Hitachi WIDESCREEN Dish Net w/Opt Out Xbox w/Comp Out(DVD) JVC S-VHS Pioneer 6 Disk CD Sony Minidisk ------------------------- Can you hear me now? 16. Thanks for the help guys. I still don't know what is causing my problem. I did hook the the component video and that seems to wrok fine so I guess I am just going to forget about the problem since I don't see myself doing a whole lot of switching with the S-video. I did notice that as soon as I plug the monitor out from the amp into the TV S-Video on the TV with no source picture I can see faint lines so somewhere something it's definitely coming from the amp. ------------------ K-horn's(Main) Cornwall's(Rear) Heresey's(Center) KSW-12(Sub) Yamaha HTR 5150 61" Hitachi WIDESCREEN Dish Net w/Opt Out Xbox w/Comp Out(DVD) JVC S-VHS Pioneer 6 Disk CD Sony Minidisk ------------------------- Can you hear me now?
  17. JT, Trying a different input was the very first thing I tried. I am currently running the Sat direct to TV which works fine but since the reciever is new I can take it back if the problem isn't on my end. I'm wondering if the SAT box has interference in it and that the reiceiver's sensitivity may be so high that it is picking up the interference and amplifying it. I am not sure if there is an internal amp on the video inputs but it wouldn't surprise me that the amp would bring up any signal levels to spec before sending them out rather than use pass through switching. 19. Upon installing my new recently aquired Yam RX-V1 the picture on my TV has faint verticle lines spaced probably about 2" apart all the way across the screen. It almost makes the picture look a little grainy. The lines are perfectly verticle and do not modulate.(I think that what I am trying to say ie they are static) As I said they are faint but it appears that the lines are being either introduced from the RX-V1 or the amp is amplifying existing interference in the signal from the DishNet S-VHS out. When I hook up the Dish direct to the TV the lines are not there which leads me to believe the RX-V1 is the culprate. Again the lines are not obvious but definitely noticeable. All of my cables are decent quality. Does anyone know what could be causing this? ------------------ K-horn's(Main) Cornwall's(Rear) Heresey's(Center) KSW-12(Sub) Yamaha HTR 5150 61" Hitachi WIDESCREEN Dish Net w/Opt Out Xbox w/Comp Out(DVD) JVC S-VHS Pioneer 6 Disk CD Sony Minidisk ------------------------- Can you hear me now? 22. Thanks for the reply's. I bought the RX-V1 from the local Sound Advice last night ($1499.99 @ 48% discount). I now that I could have gotten it cheaper online but I get piece of mind knowing that if it breaks down I can take just down the road for repairs or replacement. I was suprised that it was only $90 dollars for the 5 year extended warranty. I thought that was reasonable. The sales guy said that they have plenty of them in stock for anyone that's interested. I would imagine that you could get that price at any SA in USA. The first thing I noticed about the amp was that the additional weight in the back of the truck on the way home helped smooth out the ride. This thing is a monster. I didn't have much time to fool around with it but right off the bat I noticed alot more detail and range in the sound on the 5.1 DD. The sound didn't sound so compressed or processed. I think I am really gong to like it. ------------------ K-horn's(Main) Cornwall's(Rear) Heresey's(Center) KSW-12(Sub) Yamaha HTR 5250 61" Hitachi WIDESCREEN Dish Net w/Opt Out Xbox w/Comp Out(DVD) JVC S-VHS Pioneer 6 Disk CD Sony Minidisk ------------------------- Can you hear me now? 23. I just upgraded my Yamaha HT 5250 with the RX-V1 last night. I brought it home and got it all hooked up, which wasn't to hard because since I got the K-Horns in the living room I no longer have any of my components out there due to lack of space. All I have hooked up now is the X-Box which I use for CD's and DVD's. At any rate the RX-V1 is sitting on top of one of the K-Horns same as the 5250 was. The hookup configuration of the new amp is no different than the old but now I have faint but annoying verticle lines on the TV Screen which can be seen in the background. My first guess would be I am getting interference somwhere in the signal. I need to do more trouble shooting but I schecked all of the connections last night and they were all good. Is it possible that the amp is so sensitive it is picking up interference that the old amp didn't pass through? My video cables aren't top of the line (S-Video) but they aren't crap either. ------------------ K-horn's(Main) Cornwall's(Rear) Heresey's(Center) KSW-12(Sub) Yamaha HTR 5150 61" Hitachi WIDESCREEN Dish Net w/Opt Out Xbox w/Comp Out(DVD) JVC S-VHS Pioneer 6 Disk CD Sony Minidisk ------------------------- Can you hear me now?
  24. I am considering buying the Yamaha RX-V1 for my setup as it has been replaced by a new model and can be picked up at a discounted price. Does anyone have anything to say about this receiver? Does it have 5 channel stereo? How do the front effects sound? Is the rear center a discrete channel or is it an effect? Is it upgradeable to 7.1? How does the power rating stack up? Do you like the built in equalizer? Burr-Brown DAC's??? Are all channels Pre-ampable? Can it be used for Bi-Amping? For $1500 is it worth the money or is there a better similiarly priced model out there that is better? I am also considering the RX-V3200. ------------------ K-horn's(Main) Cornwall's(Rear) Heresey's(Center) KSW-12(Sub) Yamaha HTR 5150 61" Hitachi WIDESCREEN Dish Net w/Opt Out Xbox w/Comp Out(DVD) JVC S-VHS Pioneer 6 Disk CD Sony Minidisk ------------------------- Can you hear me now?
  25. Not much here has been said about the Hitachi (Super)Ultravision. I own the 61" HDTV set. The picture is fantastic. The smooth wide(converts 4:3 to Widescreen) mode works very well. Keep in mind that no matter what brand you buy if you want to fill the screen you are going to have distortion of the picture. The Hitachi cuts a little off the bottom and streches probably 25% on each side leaving the middle 50% of the screen unaffected. It takes a little getting used to but after awhile you hardley notice. Also the Hitachi's use the best guns available and alot of hitachi comentents are used in the top brands. The lenses are not plastic they are optical grade glass. I am told that Mitsubishi uses Hitachi guns. Also they are the largest guns available 9". Someone correct me if I am wrong but I think all other brands use 7" guns. These two things combined give the Hitachi a superb picture that does not lack in the department of brightness or clarity. Side by side with the Sony I think the Hitachi has a better picture than the sony which seems to wash out a little more. All in all the Hitachi is very good set at a reasonable price. DVD's using comentent Video are so clear it's almost amazing. Big screens have come along way from 5-10 years ago. ------------------ K-horn's(Main) Cornwall's(Rear) Heresey's(Center) KSW-12(Sub) Yamaha HTR 5150 61" Hitachi WIDESCREEN Dish Net w/Opt Out Xbox w/Comp Out(DVD) JVC S-VHS Pioneer 6 Disk CD Sony Minidisk ------------------------- Can you hear me now?
