  1. Yes, I'm definitely thinking ALK or the like. I guess where I'm going is there are some out there who don't prefer the ALK sound. Based on my poor attempt to describe my experiences with the A/AA/AL crossovers and my tendency to listen at higher volumes, should I be looking to go the ALK (or similiar) route? I hate to ask "what should I do?", but I'd like to make as educated of a purchase as possible. Best case scenario is someone has a used pair of ALK's for sale that I could pick up semi-reasonably. Thanks again- Jeff
  2. I've been following the most recent crossover threads and have read several times that I may enjoy one of the higher order networks if I listen to music at louder volumes. I have not heard any higher order networks, but here are my experiences: AL's in a pair of '84 LaScalas I owned for 9 years: Couldn't stand these. Sounded screechy is the best way I can describe it. AA's in a pair of '78s and '80s I owned for about 6 years (still have the '80s): Once I heard the AA's, I realized how much I disliked the AL's. I found the AA's pleasing to my ears mainly because the highs appeared mellower and less screechy to me. A's in the '80s I still own: Tarheal (thanks again!) sold me a pair of BEC A's about a month or two ago. Compared to my AA's, the A's seemed a little crisper in the higher frequency, but not screechy like the AL's. Mid bass seems slightly punchier as well, but the difference is subtle at best. Questions: What will a higher order network offer me that will be more appealing at higher volumes? Are my experiences with the crossovers above consistent with those who like higher order networks? Lastly, does anyone have a pair of higher order networks that I could audition? I'd prefer to hear them on my speakers in my house, since it's the atmosphere I could compare them to what I have most easily. I'm reluctant to purchase without hearing first. . .although it wouldn't be a problem if I could break even if I didn't like the sound. Thanks again guys, your input/advice is always appreciated- Jeff
  3. My .02: If you're receiving the same amount of money off the K-horns with either pair traded, I'd trade the Cornwalls in an instant. The LaScalas have more value and are a better match to the K-horns sonically. Jeff
  4. Hey fellas, I have a single Oiled Oak KG 3.2 for sale. It's a rummage sale pick up that is in presentable, but not mint shape. It has a light plant stain on the top and a couple nicks, but no corners out or anything like that. It'll make a really nice center channel. Quite honestly, I'm surprised by the amount of sound from this little guy. If I had a pair, there's no doubt I'd keep 'em. I'm at work and won't be able to email any pics until this evening, but feel free to contact me if you're interested. I'm not excited about shipping it, but will pack it insanely well if needed. I'm located about 30 minutes north of the IL border, just south of Milwaukee. I'm 5 minutes from I94. Thanks- Jeff
  5. Ken, I'm glad things worked out! Larry's a good guy and I knew whoever got 'em would be happy. Does Larry still have those monster JBL's in his living room? I'm not sure of the model, but those things gave K-horns a run for their money! Jeff
  6. I too would be interested in hearing a price for the 2100. Excellent amp. Jeff
  7. I've purchased from this seller in the past and he's a good guy. I'm taking a pass on these, but thought someone in the Milwaukee area would scarf them up in a hurry: http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/ele/309069022.html Jeff
  8. I have a very non technical point of view, but wanted to toss in that I like the sound of the AA network. The only comparison I have is vs. the AL, which as most say, is terrible. I've found the AA to be pleasing to my ears and not harsh at all. I'm not at all saying there aren't better sounding networks, but I think several of us on the board like the sound of the AA. Jeff
  9. Mike, Thanks for the quick reply. I do have my phase dial straight up, but I remember doing a bass test when I first got them and determined that was the best spot. I'm curious why that spot is LaScala specific? I double checked and my crossover is set "around" 60 hz. Is setting at 80 going to allow too much overlap between the basshorn and the subs? Did some of your measurements determine 80 hz was best? Lastly, is phase and crossover settings going to be room specific or more general to all rooms? Thanks again- Jeff
  10. Who, Out of curiosity, where did you two cross the Ultras? I've been pleased with mine at 60 Hz with my LaScalas and I'm curious where others have theirs with La Scalas. Also, where did you two end up putting the amp volume once things were fixed? I've turned mine up to around 3/4 and it shakes the room (20' x 12'). Literally. I may just have to take it up a notch [] Jeff
  11. Chuck! It's too late to call, so I figured I'd post instead. I'm too fast for ya! A money order is already in the mail. Quite honestly, I'm really curious how the A's sound compared to my AA's, although the comparison won't be that fair since my AA's aren't rebuilt. I started a network thread in the fall that ended with me saying I was going to have Bob rebuild my AA's, but I just never got around to it. Maybe now, with a second set of networks, I'll go ahead and have mine rebuilt. Please email me when you send, so I can keep a lookout for the networks. Thanks again and no inconvenience at all- Jeff
  12. I'm more along the lines of Buckster. . .I think $1,200 for a clean pair of LaScalas isn't outrageous. Like others, I too find deals in the $500-$600 range, but those only seem to come up once a year or every other year around Milwaukee. This thread makes me feel greedy for "only" getting $1325 for my last pair of LaScalas on eBay. [] Bottom line, imo, is if you pop $1,200-$1,300 for a pair of LaScalas, you'll recoup most, if not all of your investment if you ever want to sell. Doesn't sound like such a bad deal to me- Jeff
  13. Hey everyone, These are a little too expensive for me right now. There is a pair of Klipschorns in the Journal Sentinel. I talked to the guy and he seems really decent. He's the second owner and he claims they're dead mint. 1992's, oak finish, doesn't have original boxes. One tweeter has been replaced by Audio Ventures here in Waukesha. . .VERY reputable place and I trust their work. I doubt he'd ship, but it's a great opportunity for someone in the Milwaukee area to get some Horns! The number listed in the paper is 414-257-0171. Please post if someone picks these up, I'm curious how clean they are. Jeff
  14. Coytee, Same thing happened to me with my recent La Scala sale. In my message though, the person said my pictures were being used in another auction and if I followed the link provided, I would be shown the "bogus" auction. Like you, the link asked for my username and password. Leary, I didn't type it in for the same reason you stated. Must be a new scam. . . Jeff
  15. I'm with you Pete. I guess when it comes down to it, I'm more disappointed in myself for not thinking this through. In the hub-bub, I didn't think to just let the bids stand and relist if need be (fearful of not getting listing fees and final value fees back). Like you said too, brand new guy up in Minn. pays within an hour. . .you never know! On the upside, the guy who won my auction has already contacted me and we're setting up a time for him to pick the speaks up. I lurk here pretty often and don't usually say much, but thanks again for the input. I still have my other pair of La Scalas, so I'm a happy camper.
  16. Great points guys, thanks. Travis, you make a lot of sense. . .I did too much "firefighting" trying to make sure I had legit bidders rather than just seeing where things went. I haven't always had the easiest time receiving my listing and ending fees back from eBay on a deadbeat bidder auction and got worried when people weren't following what I thought were pretty simple instructions. Even after "all these years" on eBay, I'm still learning! Thanks again for letting me vent, I appreciate the input. Perspective is invaluable. Jeff
  17. Fellas (and ladies)- Please let me rant for a moment. If anyone watched my La Scala auction this week, the irresponsibility by bidders has left me dumbfounded. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=010&sspagename=STRK%3AMESO%3AIT&viewitem=&item=200073564971&rd=1&rd=1 I was pleased mid week when my reserve was met by a guy out in North Dakota. He emailed me ahead of time since his feedback rating was less than 10. He explained that hed come to pick the speakers up, etc. Saturday night, a bidder from Saskatchewan Canada put a bid in for roughly $1500. I was a bit spooked because the drive from his home to mine is over 20 hours and he never contacted me before bidding (another under 10 feedback). After calling this bidder this morning, I gave him until noon to contact me or I would cancel his bid. In the meantime, another bidder from IL put a bid in for just over $1800. At noon, after no phone or email response, I canceled the bid for the guy from Saskatchewan. I called the new high bidder from IL to let him know why I canceled the Canadians bid and let him know that he was the high bidder. He promptly retracted his bid. . .Im sure he retracted because he suspected I was maybe shilling the bids just to see where his high bid was (which of course I wasnt). Not so bad though because the reserve is still met at $1300. . .Until the guy from North Dakota emails me saying he no longer will prepay for the speakers and cannot pick them up within the 10 days that is stated in the auction. He went on to say he misread the auction description. What? In addition, eBay wouldnt let him retract his bid because the auction was ending soon so he basically said if I didnt cancel his bid, he wouldnt pay. So I canceled his bid and the auction went back to reserve not met at $1,000. When the dust clears, the auction ends at $1324, reserve is met, and everyone is happy. Im ok with the end result, which is all that matters. It appears the winner is legit and things should end smoothly. BUT, Im a bit salty about the whole auction. I think a lot of potential last minute bidders were scared off by the chaos in the closing hours. I know I would have wondered what the heck was going on if I were a potential bidder. I couldnt let anyone know what was happening because I could no longer add to my description per eBay rules. Experiences like this really throw me. Ive had flaky bidders on sports related items where the bidders are kids, but youd think responsible adults would be bidding on Klipsch La Scalas. Im just amazed by how many people treat eBay like its a fictional place. Rant over. Im sorry to vent, I should just be happy I got a good price for a fine pair of speakers.
  18. Shamelessly taking to the top. I got the auction ready to start tonight and then remembered that next Sunday is the game between the AFC and NFC champions (we can't say *uperBowl anymore, right?!). I figured that's a prety bad night to end an auction. Anyways, I'll have these on eBay starting the 4th, but they're available yet this week. Check the link to Picasa for about 30 nice pics of these beauties. Thanks again guys- Jeff
  19. James, I would disagree, somewhat. I do agree that for audio equipment, eBay usually follows the natural price cycles that come with time of year. As prices swing in private sales, those swings tend to be reflected on eBay, since it's a segment of the marketplace. Price guides and local sales can give an idea of value, but I don't think it's even slightly misguided to consider verified eBay selling prices when determining value of an item because actual sales are involved. Right now, $3,000 seems to be the going price for decent K horns on eBay. I think it's safe to say that in general, decent used K-horns are "worth" $3,000 right now. I'd even bet that upcoming k-horn auctions yield even higher prices in the next few weeks as this "new price" benchmark has been set. Then as supply increases because more people are trying to sell at the better price and demand decreases because tax return money is spent and audio takes a back seat to outdoor projects, prices should come back down. Again, just my opinion. Jeff
  20. I too have an Oppo. The picture is incredible and it's been a very reliable player for about a year and a half. I can't comment too much on sound b/c I just have it hooked up in a two channel system. As mentioned, Oppo's customer service is fantastic. I also like the firmware upgrades that have been offered by the company. As quirks are fixed or advancements are made to the player, these changes are available for download from Oppo. I'm sure there are more companies doing this, but I think it's cool that they're a proactive company. Jeff
  21. Justin, From my experience over the last 9-10 years, this kind of price swing is audio-wide, not just Heritage specific or Klipsch specific. I'm sure some of the more heavy-duty sellers here could be more specific, but tax return season is a great time to sell audio. I've just been seeing higher prices in the last couple weeks, which seemed a little early than what I've remembered. Jeff
  22. I'm really dumb and can't seem to figure out why my URL's won't work. I'll look at it tomorrow. In the meantime, here's a link to some pics: LaScala Picshttp://picasaweb.google.com/Tidmack/UntitledAlbum02''>http://picasaweb.google.com/Tidmack/UntitledAlbum02' mce_href="http://picasaweb.google.com/Tidmack/UntitledAlbum02">
